is uiuc good for physics?
Tbh everything is so uncertain now…don’t kill me for this but I honestly don’t get the hype for CS
The competition is insane
Job market
Is bad bad
CS is a big funnel to just a bunch of people with a degree
And not many jobs
Yeah
Ike the first few months of applying I just encountered CS ppl online
And you don’t necessarily need a CS degree considering the self taught ones that are really bright
I’ve never been a computer nerd so
true but a cs degree from a good institution would propel you massively in the race to get a job compared to a self taught hs graduate
and even over a degree from like some random school
But a lot of people go into CS and recommend it, but then those that have already graduated are the ones saying how difficult it is to get a job and the huge comp pool
like no one's gonna take a bootcamp dude when a person who graduated from even a t50 is also applying to the same job
I mean there are some real crazy kids out there
True …the struggle is real
I think the one thing though about an English degree is that it’s somewhat flexible
It’s all about connections and networking anyways
yeah the competition is insane for cs, but if u truly dedicate time and effort its always possible
Again I don’t know much about CS but seeing how fast Ai and all is growing…few years down the line wouldn’t this degree be dead or useless? I genuinely don’t know about this but I would want to hear some insights
Yeah I think about that too
someone has to create the ai's
True that
idt its at the point where ai's can teach themselves
Okay so what if someone created an ai that would do that too
we're acc cooked if that happens
Eventually that’ll be the case
Yeah
terminator
The future is scary ash
Everything’s going to be automated, it’s going to be the future everyone wanted but I feel like it’s going to be so
Fake
yeah lmao
ppl prolly wont even need to get out of their houses ai's j do everything
I see
and all classes and stuff are in vr or smt
Did you apply madden
Did you get into Purdue
Why not EA
I got results in December for final exams
Yep
Oh wait you didn’t ea here
Nope
Or 2nd and 3rd
What’s top
TAMU, haven’t heard from them💀
Texas a&m
Intl
Ohh ok
Wbu
Oo
What major
Nicee
Anybody willing to chance me
is uiuc good for english
I thought like are LAC are goated for humanities
It'd be nice to get in but I don't think I'll be able to go, it's like 60k a year
What is ur top choice
Yeah I applied to LACs
I don't really have one. Just any good LAC like bates, grinnell, trinity etc
I only need to get into 1
real
are they like below 20% acceptance
Yeah like 15-30%
Some are like 7-8
Like Middlebury is like 8-15
I have very low expectations so I'm not expecting much
I think most of the RD schools are going to be a reject so if I get into 1 of them I'll be happy
Why do LACs hv such low acceptance rates? Some of these I haven’t heard of well that’s cuz I am intl
I don't know
But they are hard to get into
cause they're good
Maybe to increase the yield rate
yeah it’s getting too competitive congrats on the 4 acceptances tho
Thanks! Most were safeties but it's still a good feeling to know you have a backup
Did you get into any?
Yeah I haven't heard of some of them but they're really nice
And they give great aid
It's like perfect
Oh cool
yeah j safeties and state school rn, but it’s nice to have smt to lean back on
Are you in state for UIUC
nah 😭
oos
prolly not gonna go tho cause my state school is like almost the same major wise but much cheaper
yeah
yup yup
for uiuc?
yah
wait i think thats pure cs
when you say + that means you put cs as your second major or..?
we should all do a vc
uiuc has like combined degrees kinda like it’s cs+X like physics, advertising, Econ, etc.
and everyone opens their letters
ohh ok
i didnt know that
cs+x are like 18% total
cs + x go crazy
but that’s including in state and oos idk how much it is j for oos
fr they got like 16 I think
im lowk scared for this school
how are your stats
we're applying for the exact same major both oos lmao
3.7uw 4.0w 1340sat english major
Did u submit test score or test optional?
test score
i submitted for some reason 🤦♂️
might be cooked
its okay though
i have a 4.0 UW 4.4W 35 stem act breakdown
if i get in it'd be by the skin of my teeth
(but 34 overall because reading cooked me 😔 )
oh I’m doing math+cs too prolly got mixed up 😭
how are your stats
yeah
we're competing for that spot lmao
Lot of CS+X than pure CS
cus its basically stsubbing yourself in the foot for applying pure cs with oos
also im not that interested in pure cs anyway
What if competition increases for the one that’s suppose to increase chances
yeah im from cali we dont do class rank here
im still salty over my act score because i was 1 subscore away from a 35
💀
-2 for science it turned into a 33
so quite literally 1 bubble away
ohh damn our school ranks by weighted gpa uw don’t rlly matter here
yess middlebury
They hv made both ACT and SAT a lot easier
bro i did my mf middlebury interview it was fucked up
bro asked me 10 q's ab like
disagremenets
& unpopular opinions
😭
i took 10 APs
i dont have a super high rigor count
LOL
10 APs all As, though idk if uiuc converts to uw
like what
and considers course rigor separately
wdym that’s a lot
i know way too many folks who took 15
15-16
If I get in to uiuc I have a lot of credits, should I use them cuz I lowkey forgot everything and what if I can’t keep up with advance classes 💀
im graduating a year only so i only submitted 3 ap scores
in the end im shooting for some ivy t20s so
from soph year
idk i may or may not go to uiuc depending on
hopefully that doesnt look weird
5 days
soon tm
wdym like ap credits
10 is still a lot don’t discredit yourself tho
yeah i know, but it doesn't make me stand out academically when it comes to these crazy pools
thats why i bank on my ECs in the end
how many did you take, if you dont mind me asking
most of the time academics are like an entry barrier doesn’t rlly separate anyways
yep
I took 6 💀
My academics aren’t great but my test scores are good, and my ECs are related to my major
My essays are questionable
Math CS 💀
💀
my ecs are not related to my major
welcome to the colosseum i guess
.
yeah dawg this what im saying 😭
19 bro
I took CSP, Calc BC, Lang, Physics 1, Stats, Macro, and also DC Calc III
10 is a lot
i just realized how weird my app is going to look
still insane
well if you arent well rounded thats a diff story
but like 19 😭 wt
wtf
I was struggling studying one ap subject how did u take 19
What’s the max aps college board offer 💀
39 iirc
Wow
Take out languages and that’s most of them
what the hell bro 💀
Liars
What💀
yeah I didn’t do any languages
I suck at them
😭😭😭
did you apply to like ut austin or anything
Wow I will be surprised if I am in
Considering my competition ppl with such cracked stats
oh
rip
congrats on unc tho
🎊
wait what did you apply to austin with
i bet it was cs
only way you got deferred with 19 aps
yeah
like 95% of apps
Idek like I saw some regular dudes got in 😭
oh shit that’s tuff
ok bro
I was looking at information science at other schools
19 aps
there were only 200 seats !
Instate probably?
yeah oos too tho I think
in state is such a plus for so many schools
what the fuck
fr that’s the only reason I got into my state school
💀
are you a well rounded student
I think I would say kinda
like my awards are alr not that good tbh
ecs are a little better
Being intl applicant is hard
Specially when ur avg
There be some intl applicants that r close to some breakthrough in a field
crazy competition
yes
if anything only like entry level front end dev jobs are gonna be impacted
like we still need software engineers
to fix the ai and create the ai and all that
like theres no way we can entrust the development of a whole software entirely to an ai and pray that it doesnt fuck up somewhere (it will)
i sometimes think about the future
its kinda scary tbh
like just in general
real it might lowk try to turn them on us
u see the new Chinese deepseek models
what state?
please uiuc gies please uiuc gies please uiuc gies please uiuc gies please uiuc gies
Georgetown?
yes
UIUC IF U CAN HEAR ME
real

My ass is not getting into grangier tbh
twin
Seriously I’m crashing out they should just tell me
theyre selecting who gets to venture into the cornfields and who doesn't
ive already ventured into the field far enough they should reject me

Hope everyone had a great weekend and wish you the best later this week.
Curious. How many OOS are willing to pay full $63k out of pocket?
me
its uiuc man
How big is the in state benefit for UIUC?
Realistically what are you guys expecting
No
Too expensive
I hope very big
ne
I'm willing
deferral ig
but
one can hope
😂
Are you sure 😭
No I said “I hope”
Yes its a lot cheaper than out of state
I think she means admissions benefit
70% of admitted students are instate
But how much higher is the acceptance rate?
Def a lot higher
If you look at the data set from last hear
It was 15k vs 8k accepted or something like that
So it’s definitely greater

The acceptance rate also varies based on major
for cs intl is around 6% and for cs OOS its around 4.7% 🙂
on my way to get rejected from my state school
shoutout to the university of illinois
Nope
How abt engineering
idk
Yo respond in the umd chat
i did man
Why is oos lower 😭😭
uiuc hates oos legit
they have two goals -> provide good education to illinois students and make money
auto-admitting in-state + intl seems to be the best way
my estimated sai for fafsa will prob cover a few thousand off of that so it wont be the full 63k for me but its not gonna be cheap either
Yes 🕯️ admit all internationals 🕯️
YESSSSSSSS
Does ability to pay matter?
No
yes but no
pretty big
I hope so man
my school is a huge uiuc feeder
UIUC pls
top 5 CS program with a career path where it's very likely to be making 150-200k+ out of college?
sign me up
same, last year 30+ of the seniors at my school went to uiuc
take me too uiuc
for that alone i think the price tag is justified
bc uiuc has crazy brand value for tech jobs
sure i could get the same education from rutgers and rutgers is actually pretty good too but im pretty sure uiuc has more and better recruiting
or maybe something cheaper like UDub or GT
and a much more reputed cs program
bruh my cousin goes to stevens
he says the food is terrible
i visited the campus once though it's really pretty
that view of the nyc skyline is just
peak
only if you work hard
and realistically expect 70-100k
right after graduation
Wait fr?
Lowkey might just do the engineering pathways program at UIUC then
You go to a local CC in Illinois and then if you do all the required classes at CC then you get guaranteed admission to any program at UIUC
Including pure cs
No cap
Sounds amazing
But only for in state kids
You also save a ton of money the first two years since it’s CC
Anyone know if this is the strat lol
What would the consequences be of doing CC for two years then transferring?
Also forgot to add, you get a guaranteed scholarship when you transfer
So saves you even more money once you get to UIUC
the catch is having a degree does not guarantee a good job
True
But you get UIUC cs degree
Must be worth something
Skills def better than a degree tho
currently you can get that degree without basic skills to build an app / website
Not at UIUC tho 😭
idk I know plenty
But I see what your saying
you could cheat / gpt your way through 80% of the cs req courses
and if you get C or higher on the other courses you graduate
But how do you do that during the exams
Ah I see
you can try 500 times
and in person exams I don't think some of the lower courses have them but
Do you think UIUCs cs degree is valuable?
yes
Or not very strong in terms of getting a high paying job?
but you need your skills to match that title
I understand that part 👍
i mean I also know people who went to openai / meta/ google / everything
but the point is you can't expect to make money with a degree especially how bad the cs market is
I want to make sure I have both the resume, skills and the degree
I see…
most of those cc kids, even if they graduate, probably just gonna take an IT job in some random town
Hmm
But I wanna do CC in order to pursue a UIUC cs degree
And obtain a good job in general after i graduate
In that sense do you think it’s worth it?
if you can do it sure but
Because I def wanna save the money
cc pathway does not guarantee cs transfer it's just easier
And get the cs degree from UIUC
ur gonna get a job but I can't say if it's good or bad
But it does guarantee it if you take all the required classes and pass with an B or higher in all of them
You have to follow a specific plan UIUC gives for your CC
And do exactly that without dropping any of those classes
If you do that you’re guaranteed for sure
No exceptions
I’ve talked to a ton of counselors both online and in person at UIUC
They’ve reaffirmed its guaranteed
If and only if you follow everything
True
So is this the cs market in general?
Or just people don’t have the skills?
And only the degree hoping to get a good job
it's an incredibly competitive market
most people I know that are set for a job already code very well on their 1st / 2nd year
at the current moment I think having an UIUC on your resume won't have an impression on an employer
compared to like, CMU
but gain in your case there's no reason not to
So I should transfer to CMU instead? 💀
Or MIT?
I think Reddit might have been right 💀
Going to a t5 is the only option now
Good*
I thought UIUC was t5 for CS
The market is rough
Pursuing cs because you want 200k out of college isn’t smart imo
Is that not realistically possible?
Even with the skillset?
Not for everyone
Most people
Especially now
i mean if you can transfer to MIT you don't need to worry about a job
thats acc cracked
you could do the same for CC to UCB I think
Nah I can’t 😭 I wish I could
I can only for UIUC cs
That’s what I’m saying man
I think Ill do that if I don’t get into UIUC cs directly
Which is highly unlikely I will be
Might be worth it more than UIUC
UCB is a T1 cs school
stanford, berkeley, mit, cmu, and uiuc are the top 5 i believe
gt, princeton, and cornell are usually in some order in the next three spots
ok i think this is kind of insane
UIUC will definitely open up doors in the first place
def worth it!
this is true anywhere, but UIUC will open a lot more doors a lot quicker
i mean yeah I'm not talking about < T50
that's going straight to unemployment at this point
typo*
which is my point
they'd likely start at some non-tech company in a tech role
but UIUC's CS new grads were reported to make $131k median for 22-23
which is definitely good
and imo worth it to shell out the extra 30k or so per year over a cheaper option
es
EE Admission rate is so high
There’s no way 150k is like the mean or median salary.
Kinda is
2023 it was 39.5%
I guess around like 30% this year
300 internationals applied for ee in 2023
And 2100 for cs
woah where did you get this
last year they sent out an email week-of with the specific time
uiuc is an expensive ass school, even tho its public a lot of people have the familial connections to succeed at such a level right after graduation
its t10
t5 is CMU > Berkeley > Stanford > MIT > Georgia Tech
Eh I mean uiuc is 5th on usnews
no gt is ranked lower than uiuc
like 1 or 2 spots lower
but rankings dont mean much when you get to the highest tier tbh
i would rank gt over uiuc for the opportunities
haven't gotten anything yet
yo where'd you get this from
3 days…
does uiuc have fye too
no
some dude on reddit filed a FOIA request
how were admissions this year guys
Friday
oh shi its late this year huh
90k? source?
There was an article on Reddit, it’s from dailyillini
can u forward it
It was around 85k to 90k applications this year
Aight
Here you go
it doesnt rlly say 90k
Not exactly 90k but we can assume
mhmm could be max 83k ish....I hope its not 90k🥲
What happened between 21-22?
average sat is 1510
mostly competitve applicants apply to the less popular engineering majors
Commonapp
Prolly joined common app
How are your stats
Me pulling up with 3.3uw
How many aps
lol ok
because people are sweats
You don’t have to share
am i bros competition 😭😭😭
apparently yes
blawg my ass getting rejected dont u worry
💀
Isn't the AR for oos ce like 40%
Erm actually 🤓
Unless you count deferred
doesnt matter bro i have 2 rej rn
Then 33.3333333%
like 20
There was a Google sheets in this thread
EE was around 40
it says 34% on the spreadsheet but ar’s are fucked tbis year so prolly around 25
How is ce harder than ee
cause all of the cs sweats apply CE to cheese it
Understandable
22%? yea gg
oh right
Wtf mech is more competitive than ee
most engineers would be mech engineers i assume
Yeah ig
idk highkey its pretty diverse now
like mech is still high percentage but theres alot of ee, ce, cheme ppl
oh
I did it
do we think if im in state + female for gies the acc rate is better than the advertised 23%
cus they only have eng data
rip
prob
ok real
hi pack
bro im not ready for deiciosn
cus i heard ppl in my class talking ab them
like oh
Is it reasonable to assume the instate female AR for math and CS is higher than 29%?
i think
that makes sense
yuh
my parents think uiuc is my onkly shot
bro im cooked
its fine econ 2nd major should be chill
ok real
i will hope so
yea econ shouldnt be too hard
at all
except i heard ppl on reddit um
am i cooked
hopefully my essays will help
Remember: someone “better” than you will get rejected
And someone “worse” than you will get accepted
my essays are sooo ass
👎
@hardy geyser
Come back in march
bro got boiled
😔
purDONT

PLEASE UIUC
Accept me gang
Accept me and lower tuition thanks
Matter of fact, accept everyone who has participated in this chat
Indeed. I am wishing everyone in here the best.
can you give me a lifetime supply of corn
ahhhhhh
Good luck!
i used official school colors too
Should I slide into the admissions office rn and stamp "accepted" on ur applications? 🤣🤩
give me ur names
jkjk
Pleaseee
please gies please 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
2 days🥲
5% 💀💀💀
international has higher acceptance rates than out of state, wow
Where’d you get this data?
Guys I time travelled to the future, everyone that participated in this chat got in, this is true
someone filed a FOIA request
Do they have cs + x majors on there?
this is the rest
only grainger?
theres a spreadsheet from 2022 that has data on that, idk if it would interest u cause it is kinda dated
yeah but theres a spreadsheet from 2022 w like the cs + x majors
yeah but it's a) old and b) a lot is redacted
Any data for Gies?
That is wild for cs + physics
couldn't find it
lol the difference between male and female
Ah damn
probably not a lot of girls applying
and they just didnt accept any international females 😭
the only data i can find for gies is the overall acceptance rate which was 23%
if i had to guess, it's too low to show data
could be wrong
Oh man 😭 cooked
why is oos acceptance rate lower than intl for some😭
ikr shits crazy
dude this pisses me off
so much
low numbers of applicants
I think someone said public unis like to admit instate students + full pay intls (bonus for them)
I agree. Less people applying, more qualified applicants, and money.
this also but even ones who are avg get in cuz at the end of the day that tuition money
well
well OOS and intl tution is arond the same right?
is it?
I'm not sure but intl won't get FAFSA benefits
yeah I checked
ur right
I think it comes down to financial aid
we arent eligible for that
isnt there something similar for OOS kids as well
I feel like 99% of the time if ur questioning why a college is doing something the answer is money ngl
true
oh nvm then....maybe they rlly love that extra 3k😭
true
15%
Thats kinda
😔
Surely i can get in
15% is doable
PLS
my friend at uiuc said that this data is pretty outdated
esp in the last 3 years
yuh it is
its also during covid
So its not accurate
you can assume it's a lot lower than 15%
pls make it higher 🙏🙏🙏
i agree 😭
2019
did u apply for cs + math?
yes
Need it
The CE data is frim
From
2023 though
There was some posted
A few days ago
35% acceptance rate OOS

data in here is college wise tho not major
Do i need to start redditmaxxing
Skull
Chat what do u think a competitive sat for intl math+ cs is
yeah
1520+?
but thats overall since uiuc admits by major its different
No for CE
ohhh
engineering is another level cooked this year...for purdue and uiuc
why is no one gunning for uw-madison tho
congratss
More nervous for tech
Thanks
Tech will be tough
But they don’t have enrollment crisis problemsnso
So
I was
Same
If georgia tech comes throguh
The way im gonna commit bruh 😩😩
I dont see many ppl compared to uiuc and purdue
ok maybe ill wait for march
underrated school for ca
cs
what are they known for?
no idea
Not as competitive tho
no its still pretty competitive
Ive heard its socially dead tho 💀💀
lol wisconsin\
Perfect for CS majors type shi
its not even in the middle of nowhere
I like the location
Im only really waiting from georgia tech and uiuc for earlies now
If they come through
Im chilling
🙏
Im not used to cold climates
Cali weather suits me better
But
have u got in anywhere yet
It is what it is
yeah
nice
1 safety 1 target
where
mich
yeah
And minnesota
niceee
umich whoa
u get in for cs?
i applied cs, ill get to know if i got in in like 5 days
like
Advance selection
how much will a good sat help for math cs
mich COE intl is not a target
it's absolutely a reach
hell even instate it's probably a reach
the overall acceptance rate is 13%
I got LSA
Eh
LSA is 25% IIRC including instate
Does it really matter
kinda does
Why
Just gives you confidence for the rest
😭
better to categorize it appropriately lol
know where you stand
idk
I landed COE OOS
made me hella confident
my friend was an eagle scout and got deferred
I don't think it's that deep
It's like every other school where like
Achievement in your ECs matters the most
well I guess it might differ for LSA
but for COE that's what I've seen
Oh well
which country r u a intl from?
We’ll see if i get CS or not 💀💀
India
wait did you apply straight CS to UIUC
bro might be cooked
Cs+ math
still cooked💀
I mean
you can just
double major
bro
my USAMO medal usaco camp friend
he applied to gtech
Im going to yeah
@latent lotus this sound familiar lil bro?
I applied CE with the full intention of not transferring
this mf applied history tech society
