you have to a) read literature, b) come up with an informed hypothesis, c) come up with an experiment (a way to test your hypothesis), d) ensure that your experiment is clear and logical and run it, e) collect data from your experiment, and f) see if your data supports or doesn't support your hypothesis, and frame your results accordingly
