Degrees are degrees, earned and paid for. I'm happy that they stated its temporary because most uproar has circulated on the idea of revoking degrees. Now, on the matter of antisemitism, that is a rocky road for me to comprehend at Columbia. Media has manipulated alot of the story, so we don't know a clear enemy or victim. But, protests do not equal harassment, they are a right in the US.
Still, we have to understand that Columbia's political issues stem from a VOCAL minority of students in campus
Let me move on from this, and I apologize for bringing up a topic like this

Also to be completely clear, protests are protected under the first amendment, but in private property and in businesses it is up to the discretion of the owner. Whether or not a large private university like Columbia should be able to exercise that power is a different question. Living in a capitalist society means that private property has its own rights, free of the government. It’s a very sticky situation; and especially in a country like US which is based on common law not civil law, means that all interpretations can be argued in court and successfully argued. The situation in Columbia is not just about protests, or antisemitism, or various political stances. It’s a combination of these and also the fact that these are extremely debatable topics, and are also very sensitive. However, I do believe the fact we can have these debates, and come to our own conclusions regarding the law in this common law system is one of the beauties of America and other western nations. We the people (mostly) can decide what flies and what doesn’t.

Ideally, I would definitely want to go to protests, be vocal, and take advantage of the spotlight on columbia now to speak up. I was talking to a man who previously worked at Nvidia and who is now retiring to be a journalist in NYC to cover the Columbia protests and advocate for Palestine. But the difference between me and him is, he already saved up lots of money and can always have a relatively stable life, and i lowk might be in 200k debt if i choose to go to columbia. and it's a very debatable and sensitive topic like you said, and up to the courts, so I'm just keeping my head down

Since it is at discretion of the Columbia administration, and you have no legal protection; I would not risk it. You could win in a court, but it is much less likely since Columbia is private. Analyze the climate. Sometimes sacrificing your values may be more valuable than thousands of dollars lost. Remember, no one is above the law or above the discretion of a private institutions code of conduct. There are many ways to vocalize what you believe in that can be anonymous and also not jeopardize things you’ve achieved, or affect other students learning. Sometimes you also need to look from the perspective of an average university student. They are just here to learn and would rather not have a building boarded up, no matter how noble the cause.
And not to sound condescending, I suggest if you want to protest sensitive topics, choose ones you truly and unequivocally believe in, not just one that aligns with your broader political view, or something that seems like jumping on a bandwagon of something noble. This is a hubris of many “SJW’s” and leads to their downfall, it’s unfortunate, but in a world when everyone is connected, one needs to play their cards carefully.
