It's the vicious circle of fear as a motivator. It can be terribly effective, so as you become conditioned to rely on it more, your other internal motivating mechanisms atrophy.

So your subconscious in desperation starts developing self-sabotague habits intended to dig you into deeper holes and coax more intensity out of your fear response. Eventually you might find yourself uncontrollably checked-out, anxiously aware that you're passing the point of no possibility of success but still waiting for the panic and adrenaline to finally kick in so you can snap out of it and get started already. It's like an out-of-body experience, deeply troubling yet seemingly paralyzed unable to bring yourself to do anything about it.

I don't really know what the solution is, I just recognize the condition all-too-well. Perhaps therapy? Maybe someone with a background in psychology could weigh in?

In my experience with spending a lot of time abroad

Columbia’s name rec internationally is basically second only to Harvard

For US it’s harder to say though

-people have def heard of yale but they know more about columbia bc of the nyc thing

i think also the fact that they do dual BAs with TCD, SP, and TAU helps

bc those are all top schools in their respective regions

they're so rich with endowments the columbia grant most people get unless they're super well off or international is quite generous

im not necessarily low income, my parents might make 58k on paper, but we owned two restaurants back in 2023 and a regular suburban house and i still got WAY more than enough finaid

they base it off of your css and what you state your parents are willing to pitch in, and then your own assets, and then factor in work study

at the end of the day, i put down 15k my parents were willing to pay for me, and finaid essentially followed that exactly plus or minus a bit
