this is my opinion which might be a little controversial

if you go to CC you're limited to 18 credits a semester, have to take a bunch of gen reqs like lithum and frosci that are really time consuming and your time might be better spent elsewhere

some of my friends who are math majors spend the majority of their time reading books they dont want to read

if you really like reading and thinking about the humanities do it in CC

and if you dont care about being credit limited

As for the distinction between physics/applied physics - im not really sure if there’s a huge difference or not (u could probably ask abstractnonsense abt this) but i think it doesnt really matter too much if u want a physics phd as long as you have all the relevant coursework

Columbia applied physics is on par with its theoretical physics

We have our plasma lab among other things in our APAM department

We have 1 of 4 operating tokemaks in the USA iirc and there’s a lot of push for research on stellarators
