u can only do it during junior and senior year so ur first 2 years have to be normal or honors classes and my school barely offers any honors and then most IB classes we offer you have to do for two years in order to take the test but it's not just test for some it's 2 long tests plus an individual oral exam with just your teacher
and if it's not a class that requires the individual oral it requires a long individual research paper
so that plus ur one or two tests (depending on what class)are what make up your actual IB grade

Yes UCSC's astrophysics and astro focused areas overall are some of the best in the nation, we actually run both UC observatories, and professors will take their students there. Professors will help students get experience such as research which is very cool

I don't know SJSU's stats and what the program is like, but one of the advantages of UCs is that you get more research opportunities. I've not met any applied math people, I only know of one who's a friend of a friend and apparently he's gonna work with AMD, on what I have no clue, but I presume so long as you put in the work you'll get the opportunities (but this also applies to SJSU).
