I generally just code stuff that helps people in my life so I’m horrible at coming up with ideas for funsies 😭

Okay @latent vale the traffic light project models each light as a tiny machine learning algorithm. Each light's algorithm just needs to pick how long to one direction each time it switches to that direction. Then it simulates traffic with that schedule and calculates wasted time. So each tiny traffic light can incrementally improve via machine learning.
I am also toying with using an actor-critic model. So each light has its own decision making process (actor) and then there is a universal critic network that looks at the entire traffic simulation and the strategies of each light and tries to predict how much time will be wasted at each light then is not optimized to find the least wasted time, but to find strategies that waste less time than the critic predicted, basically as way to ensure a balance of exploration and exploitation
