#MIT (2024-2025)
1 messages · Page 22 of 1
It is based on availability still, but an interview could help bolster your chances if it went well; not the end of the world though
Best of luck, i hope things go well for you
Although I don't know how MIT's admissions office works (I'm not an admissions officer or anything, pfft), they almost certainly get barely any applicants from the Middle East in general, let alone Syria
So they should take that into account - in theory you really shouldn't be held up to the same standard as somebody who already had a ton of opportunities (Western country, rich prep school, etc.)
The one consistent theme I've gotten from mit's admissions blogs is that, even though they obviously value those achievements, they also want to make sure that you'd actually be able to do well on campus, that you're nice to others, that beyond your achievements there's also someone who would genuinely fit in at campus
That's not to say that you're a bad person or didn't do enough if you got rejected/deferred/waitlisted, it's just that they probably didn't think you were an amazing match, and that's fine! You don't have to go to MIT to be successful, and not everyone that does will be, so just focus on doing what you think is best for yourself
||I mean, okay, it probably won't feel 'fine' (I know I'll be pretty downtrodden when that rejection letter eventually comes in on Pi Day), but what I meant to say is that it'll almost certainly be okay in the long run, so you can relax||
Yep I definitely agree haha
I've taken to calling Harvard the better school in Cambridge (definitely easier to get into)
In an attempt to care less
But seriously, yeah. It will sting being rejected with how much I've learned about the school and really feel I would be happy there (spending a weekend at in cambridge two weeks before decisions certainly won't help lol), but ultimately the admissions officers probably know better than I do
Yes
How many
how important is mit interview
mit and harvard both fking amazing
for whatever field
every school is amazing
type shi
alright
most interviews are essentially just a paragraph or two about you
i think some are sentences actually ?
trying to determine fit
i think mine was ok? bro idk lol
washlee
yooo nice
its not even that, it's like
there's a lot of people that could sucessfully be at MIT
it's jsut that there's so few spots that it essentially comes down to how compelling your application looks within thast context
and tbh
Yeah exactly, they're just really selective
it's very miniscule gap between getting in and not
yeah
a lot of top STEM students at good state schools or T20s would not be out of place at MIT
and vice versa
Not the case for this place
Yes, it's based on availability, but what would you do if no one is available to interview syrian applicants? Are you going to risk admitting an international student, from Syria, without an interview!!
So I'm assuming: since we have no syrian alumni doing interviews, mit reviews apps, after picking who's likely to get admitted, they assign them to an interviewer from any place to conduct a virtual interview
The thing is that, even though interviews help, as far as I'm aware they're not really necessary
They are supposed to be understanding in that case
Whether they actually are? I have no idea though
Thank you! Even tho I'm certain it's over for me lol
Hopefully not, but either way, best of luck man
You need to forget a lot of things you know about the application process when internationals are in question, let alone from a place like syria
Thank you! You too
Oh yeah I'm aware, I'm from an underrepresented region too (though not that underrepresented)
But from what I've heard it isn't too different for us internationals, like, in theory it should be the same
Bro your profile says Europe 💀
I'm from an island and had to travel for like half a day just to take the SAT
I barely know anybody applying to university and literally nobody doing it in the US lol
Doesn't mean it doesn't come with more privileges though
Like I'd say I'm less privileged than the average Portuguese applicant (I don't go to an international school or anything, I had to handle a lot of stuff myself), but relative to someone from Syria.. I mean, it's going to be a lot more tough sadly
True. Its not different in the application sense, but it is drastically different when talking about what results expect, and what standard you're held to
Yeah
I'm someone who's asking the schools im applying to, to invest 0.3 million usd in me (i need a full ride lmao)
Honestly the most annoying thing is that all the advice you see online seems to be exclusively geared towards people from common backgrounds already
Like, I see so many people saying "they'll compare you to other applicants from your school"
What applicants!?
Lol
Let's just hope for the best though, I do think they like underrepresented backgrounds at least
I come from a region with so many competitive applicants a nearby high school got 6 mit acceptances just in the early around 💀
the standards are definitely different
so if i move to corsica or smth ill have 1% more chance to get in
You'll also have -94% more opportunities
yea its totally different
This
im the only polisci applicant to mit in the entire northern part of my country at least (possibly even the entire country)
and my interviewer said that might slightly help me
Syrias only sat center decided to shut down last year out of nowhere
So now we're hitting aoers with arbitrary numbers on a translated arabic transcript
i thnk it was basically impossible for them to operate legally w/ the sanctions in place
gl to yall that sounds tough af
Bro they were fine for 10 years
thats weird
Could just be the political situation
im guessing a trip over the border to turkey or jordan wasnt feasible
Assad singlehandedly kept the test center running /j
This is the first season college board decided: yeaaa im not having it anymore lil bros
Loll
Nah it shut down months before our boxers model was overthrown
ppl in my area flying to diff places to take the sat coz nearby centers r all fully booked is like such an opposite problem
Lebanon and jordan were the options
our centers are always underbooked
in fact i think we were one of the very few cases where we had make up sat days
In Lebanon its cheaper but a war broke out
cause one date in may fell on orthodox easter weekend and the staff were like we aint coming
No test centers where I live so I had to take a 2h flight to the mainland
But also there's very few people here taking the SAT it really wouldn't have been worth it either way
i aint risking my physical safety to take the sat atp
For jordan its like my dad's yearly income
there is a solution to this. remove test optional and add a test waiver option for these circumstances
but collegeboard lobbying wont allow that
Schools supposedly understand these situations
Pretty sure most colleges let you waive the test score requirement for reasons like that
yeah
All syrian applicants applied with no testing this season and a bunch of them got in
thats nice
yea bc theres prob no testing centers 💀
Pton, brown, stanford... (early round)
At least we're in the 2020s, imagine being in Deir Ezzor in 2015 or something
i hope u guys dont have any issues with your f-1 visas tho
cause a certain man with orange makeup might reinstate some previous bans
Ohh boi you know too much
yeah
honestly im glad i lived in the DSAT era
paper one had these long ass texts
i aint reading all that
yeah same
On one hand i'm european so i don't think i'd be impacted too much
But honestly i'd probably still be impacted by everything else
During trump season one, some students were miraculously able to get the visa
we probably wont
(And there's a good chance that, if he fucks it up, he fucks it up for everybody)
usually EU countries are "safe"
I feel for y'all though
relatively
How do you know deir ezzor
Youre impressing me
but overcoming the presumption of leaving the us after studies might be a bit hard
like imagine being in that room
and being asked
I used to read up on the syrian civil war like 2-3 years ago
The siege of kobane was also pretty impressive, there's a documentary on it i think
well esp getting a work visa
after you finish your studies, instead of seeking a job with 120k+ yearly salary, i will return to my concrete-filled city to be paid 800 euro a month
time to get rizzy and marry a us citizen
now shout out to my grandma and mom who passed me citizenship under n600k
At least if you're paid in euros you can make use of the schengen area
but for yall i will try to empathize
Loll
cant even pay rent with that
Like, the job market here in Portugal kinda sucks, and the cost of living is so insane that it's virtually never worth it
But we also have the privilege of working in a ton of other countries
most of the us is concrete filled car park anyways ur not missing out on too much
true but at least its not pretentious
but reality is this
esp if donny manages to yeet the quality of life down the drain w the fda and doe kaboomboomed
when one thinks of my country its like this
lol is that santorini
Ok goodnight everyone idk how imma wake up 5 hours later and go to school
Best of luck, sleep well
a lot of the cs profs at my local state uni are greek so maybe its like a professional degree immigration thing
Portugal and greece are pretty similar in a lot of aspects tbh
Amazing place to visit, meh place to actually live in, bad place to grow your career or earn well
some sort of island idk
lowk reminds me of central china where my grandparents live
its like the balconies
its urban anarchy
back in the 70s there was this policy of "antiparochi"
where essentially if you owned land in the city or a house
you would be approached by a contractor and he would be like
ok give me this land
i will build and cramp as many apartments as possible
and i will give you 3
so all the traditional houses dissapeared
and we got filled with soulless apartment buildings
yet for some reason a shitty apartment in one of those costs 200k+
💀
Here, there's a ton of real estate construction, but even though the market is satured it's basically all luxury apartments since those are what pay best
ah i see
So even though we have Greek salaries, a half-decent apartment is minimum 150-250,000€
the funny thing is i live in a quasi urban suburban area which used to literally be just fields and was rapidly developed
and they build luxury apartments next to mid houses
And most of the apartments being sold are 500,000-1,000,000€
like its out of place
thats actually crazy
jeez
Meanwhile.. I think almost a quarter of people here don't even earn 10k a year each
us housing seem much more affordable in comparison
Average family income is probably like 40k a year
idk if its integrated into ur society, but here our people have an obsession to pass real estate to their children
its just foreign rich ppl buying them right
Yeah pretty much
like u are considered a failed parent if u dont give ur child a house
I think Portuguese people only move out of their parent's house in their mid 30s on average
Because that's when you can actually afford to take a mortgage on a house
Renting one is too expensive for most people
ig for chinese ppl its the opposite where children r expected to be successful enough to buy their own home & give their parents a better living situation
idk about other people but my cousin who is from a village and is studying in my city moved out at 18
Most apartments cost more to rent than the gross minimum wage after taxes, and I think 10-20% of people only earn that much
usually greek students dont study near their homes so they start to rent from 18
alot of pressure ngl
its starting to be like this in us for non college grads and in some cases college grads too
im genuienly worried about supporting myself i cant worry for more people
I see people being like "I've been in the workforce for 20 years and I still only earn 10k a year, what are these youngsters complaining about"
Which.. idk man, that just makes me sad
but im lucky bc if i decide to move out to greece im supposed to inherit my grandma's apartment so at least i wont be homeless
back*
Yeah, my area is kind of the opposite - there's very few expectations but also not much opportunity to really stand out
the property bubble will burst
but when that comes people wont have cash to actually buy things
and banks wont give out loans
Nobody who I talk to wants me to even apply to MIT for example
so only those that have reserves will be able to buy
My parents don't, took me years of convincing (started in 10th grade and they only started to accept it / not dismiss it a few months ago)
Whenever I bring it up with people, a lot of the time they tell me it's not worth it and that it's a waste of time / that the local universities aren't any worse / etc. etc.
they dont want to be seperated from u probably
my parents tell me smth similar like
True, but it's not just that, it's the mentality
why dont u do ur bachelors here
greek universities are very good
you can do ur masters in the us
Like, I remember telling my psychologist I wanted to go to MIT and she told me how it was totally unnecessary and that i could just do my bachelor's here for like 5-10 minutes
like ok ik our unis are academically fine
My aunt was the same, my parents were the same - hell, when I brought it up on r/portugal i just got downvoted and had people tell me the same thing
At least my teachers kinda believe in me, I'm glad for that
but there is no organisation in our unis otherwise
damn
at least my teachers support me
but then again i do ib so its assumed that i will go abroad
Portuguese universities aren't all that bad either - they're essentially my safeties lol - but obviously i'd be a lot more glad if i got into a good university in the US
IST in Lisbon is basically the closest thing we have to MIT and it's definitely my number one choice.. but i also don't really like lisbon that much (and rent prices are insane)
dont get me wrong. aristotle university is ranked like 450 in the world (ik rankings arent best metric) which is decent. it also has produced many successful alumni + its completely free
but our universities have become so heavily politicized
there is a great chance that if smth controversial happens during my studies
some anarchist student group will literally camp inside the building
police isnt legally allowed to enter uni
Oh what .w.
cause people have assylum in uni under greek law
so i will lose maybe a whole semester
I mean universities here are kind of political but nowhere near that extent
and it ruins my exams
That's kind of insane though
this dates back from the civil war
bc the military junta drove a tank and crushed some students inside the uni
so if any govt dares to touch that law its over
Oh, that explains it
so the unis have become a breeding ground for drugs
for molotov cocktail throwing
for destruction of public property
you name it
Yeah I can see why you wouldn't want to go then
In my case, it's not really that I don't want to, as much as it is the fact that American universities honestly just seem better - really good aid policies, amazing connections, really comprehensive curriculum, tons of flexibility, I love the culture, etc.
But they're also so hard to get into that realistically speaking I'm almost certainly not going to
like if i stay i dont pay for anything, i have my house, my car, my family + i can distinguish myself in an environment where 90% of students are mediocre
unless they give me a full ride the expenses start to add up
even if i dont have any charges due to mit
its at least 2k for transport
book costs
personal costs
insurance
Same here, but the cost of living in Lisbon is so expensive that it's unironically cheaper to fly round-trip to Boston every month and not pay anything there
That, or I can go to my local university, but it's not that great
makes sense
i have the perk of being in a city with the largest uni in the balkans
so i dont have to move
Let's just hope for the best though
At the end of the day, we don't really know what's ahead of us
But I did enjoy having this conversation at least, pretty refreshing to be able to take a break from.. well, everything else lol
sometimes you just need to chill yk
Wait no i should've phrased that differently
I meant like - most people here are from really overrepresented groups already
Nothing wrong with that but it is nice to feel heard i guess, I'm not from the Bay Area or from some $40,000/year private school, it feels like half of the things on here don't apply to me sometimes lol
yeah
its a different world
but you adapt
i go to a private school on scholarship which i wouldnt be able to afford normally
but im actually having a good time contrary to what i expected
its just really what people you choose to surround yourself with
In my case, pretty much nobody I know wants to go to college abroad probably because i didnt even take the college-preparatory track (please don't reject me i can do calculus)
I have a few classmates who want to study at the local uni but that's it lol
everybody in my department wants to go abroad
but in away everyone is naturally sorted into the kind of college that fits them
||Long story short but it enables me to take classes that I'm actually interested in, at the expense of some course rigor - so, I have a bunch of really amazing programming classes that I excel in, but my math teacher barely even explained what a derivative was - I explained that in my essays, hopefully it doesn't harm me too much (since i did make an effort to learn the advanced material myself, I have a schoolhouse.world calculus certificate for example)||
i virtually have no competition rn because those who got into t20s got into the early round and now im just waiting
they like schoolhouse
idk how they might feel that i took the easiest math course available in IB
yet again i never said my strong area was math
Might not be seen well, but if you did amazingly well there, you're probably fine
consistent A+ in us scale
Should be fine then
- 780 sat so not cooked ig
Tbh the only other issue with my app is that, I get really consistent A+s and A*s in most of my classes, but I also have a few (all non-STEM) that are exclusively Bs
i dont rlly think thats a problem
Like, I have 7-8 classes where I've never gotten anything other than an A, and 2-3 where I've never gotten anything higher than like a B (or maybe an occasional A)
thats many classes
Caveat being that the former are STEM, and the latter aren't - PE, languages, etc.
I don't know how it looks if I consistently get perfect grades in math/programming/english/social science/physics/etc., but consistently get really bad grades in portuguese lol
i have 6 classes in junior and senior year
but when i was in the national school system in freshman and sophomore i had like 13/14/15 classes
Yeah, i'm taking a vocational curriculum so i have like 4 extra subjects relative to everyone else
its all about the circumstances man as well
like in physics i had a shit teacher in 10th grade
i could barely get a 50% in the test
so i did self study and got a tutor
Oh damn
and sure enough in the exams i wrote 100%
im lucky now bc we are like max 9 ppl in a class
It's actually kinda funny, the score distribution of each national exam is available online
Out of like 30,000 students who took the advanced maths exam (Matemática A), I believe a few hundred got a perfect score (100%)
like someone would get a 45% on a test which would ammount to a ~9/20 and on the term they would put a 17/20
Out of the 35,000 students who took the portuguese exam (Português)? Literally in the single digits
You are dozens of times more likely to get a perfect grade in the Mathematics exam than in the Portuguese one
i feel like the people marking greek lit feel entitled or smth
they refuse to give good scores
Has anyone here done the MIT blueprint hackathon before. Do you know if it's worth going to?
Oh yeah
Portuguese involves a lot of old literature as well, can't imagine it's too dissimilar from greek lit
The education system is very human (half of my classmates can't spell and we never learned how to write a formal email, and yet we spend every single class analyzing old literature and learning how to identify a dozen different types of adverbial subordinate clauses)
damn
im rlly enjoying discovering similarities with my fellow europeans but its 12:15 am and i have to wake up at 6:40 tmr so unfortunately i have to go sleep
Thank god I know the difference between a subject predicate, a direct complement, a name complement, the adverb complement, the adjective complement and the passive agent complement, this will surely be useful when I can barely remember how to write sometimes
but im confident you excelling in an under resourced environment will work in your favor
in any case, good luck 🙂
Same, good luck to you too!!
Oh fun, I didn't know English syntactic functions were fucked up too
Whens the last day for interviews? im intl
??????
it really depends on the olympiad
IMO medalist in 2 years? LOL
IChO or IBO in 2 years? definitely doable
- solid dedication is difficult when school is a 9-5 and you have ECs to juggle
im not making excuses im just saying its more difficult than you might think
did any of you guys do any summer programs
guys, are interviews for internationals still rolling? or am i cooked (cause i didnt recieve one yet :((( )
Girl bye
me too no interview yet 😦
mit interviews are only availability based right ?
so it doesn't mean anything if you get or don't get
yeah thats true
🙋
Yea
Don’t fret abt it
They won’t penalize u for not interview
Man I hate math olympiads so much lmao
prepped for a total of like 25 hours of nothing but practice tests in 8th grade, got AIME in 9th grade, and never touched them again
damn gg
my group partner in English 1, during the day of the presentation, went to take USABO just so he could skip
💀
awful im pretty sure
i hate them but only bc i fell off after 10th grade
though he's smarter than me
omg I didn't even qual for AIME in 10th grade
didnt do the rest subjects
not when you get a 0
and I was too lazy to register in 12th
bro no
ykw aime this year was scuffed i got a 7 for the second time in a row
AIME 1 or AIME 2
bro im so pressed i made like 3 arithmetic errors on this year and last
Its wild cause I have like 9 USAMO friends, most who qualified before 11th grade
add 1 more
i legit answered 1-11 and 14 and fucked up like 5 of them idk what i did
whatever
1-11 is good though
what's done is done
dont remind me
last year's AIME I took 60 minutes to answer the first ten questions, then left bc I didn't care enough to work through the rest
literally in less than a month
I got a 5 💀
thats a very good pace honestly
6mins per
usually the avg is 12
oh u got 5 ☠️
I'm gonna beg Collegeboard to make an AP competition math course just so I can kill whoever teaches it
yes
final AP exam is the AIME
Would be lit
grade bounds would be dogshit
nah make the IMO
your ap score is your floor(aime score/3) 💀
to get a 5/5 you need to score 4 points out of 42
we getting a 2 with this one
💀
LMAOOOOOO
am i crazy bc i think i could get at least 2 points on IMO
trivial work gives u 0 points lmao
need to make some substantial progress to even get 1-2
usamo scoring system but same appleis for imo
like 1 pt on 1 and 1 pt on 4
i feel like that could happen
maybe try a crack at 2/5 but no hope on 3/6
i met a gold medalist from IMO and the way he solves things is actually just terrifying
i am speed
Honestly I'm astounded by how well I've done in college decisions so far
Everything I've done is so incredibly mediocre and took so little time compared to everyone else
what did you get?
and i feel the same lol
with scholarships on northeastern and RPI, and potentially a full ride for USC
oml congrats
real bro i only applied need blind RD
no concept of safety as intl needing aid
thanks, definitely don't feel like I deserve it so far 💀
literally like if i wanted safety id stay in my country
trust
you'll get somewhere
Ye
MIT would be a fever dream
Never in my wildest dreams would i imagine this working out
no bc obviously something you did merited acceptance, they feel like you would be a great fit and they think you will grow into a joy to have on campus ggs
On the off chance that it does
i knowwww omg
Thanks man
imo gold medalists
literally the cream of the cream of the cream of the crop
honestly i saw a video online from the china imo team and they clown silver medalists lmao
If I managed to get IMO gold, then I would feel the right to clown on everyone else
if i had imo gold everyone would hate me bro id be insufferable
Bro I have the blandest stats and yet I still act insufferable sometimes 💀
fr
kinda real
like "hur hur I interned at boeing and built a fusor" no bitch you aint special
anyone submitted mit slideroom stuff
yeah i did music
yup, made a whole 2 minute reel
Hi!
ah cool
Is MIT worth it for basket weaving? I’m trying to decide between MIT and UMich EA.
are we deaduzz
basket weaving?
idk, I'm currently deciding between Purdue and the Illuminati for quiltmaking
ummmmm ok
therres an MIT in india
you can go there
Ive never been to India before
MIT in the usa is world renowned
bro do you lowkey keep reopening your portal just to check if it's still there
MIT usa basketweaving is not bad
i check if any changes or sm or recent activities
im scared if i dont keep checking itll disappear
i check mainly for recent activities
Sometimes I fear they'll hire conor mcgregor to ring my doorbell and bitchslap me when I open the door
omg this is so me
where did yall apply RD full list rn
They should let everyone in honestly
yassss
0% rejections
I only applied to ivies and one safety
And umich ea for fun
(duke umich and gtech were deferred)
This setup is so aesthetic
cant wait to see how many days I make it into march until my no refection streak is nuked
oh yay i only hit you on one school
Chrome bookmarks i thinks
Congrats on usc!
Thanks! interviewed for a full ride scholarship 2 weeks ago
omg hope you get it
guys idk if this is just me
but
3% sounds a whole lot easier than 2000/60000
do yk what i mean by that
lowkey yeah
thank you omg like i swear when i think 3% i just have to be 1 out of 30 not 2000 out of 60000
1 out of 30 just feels like beating 29 people 2000/60000 feels like beating 58000
minus aura for not knowing percents
sometimes I glaze myself that being requested to interview for scholarship for usc ea is 1000/40000 applicants, and then I remember that I'm a royal dumbass
erm actually its 33.3̅
lmfao
idk
dammit why wont the bar work on discord 💀
like when you say 2k/60k it feels like there are so many more options other thn me yk
also its crazy to me how many people apply
heard 2007 had a spike in births
yeah but still
mit last year was 1300/30000
yeah but every applicant is insanely cracked by themselves
Like I feel like I'm probably slightly below the average applicant to MIT, which does not leave very good prospects for me going there 💀
literally
like
idk on my rea i got really fucking lucky
i feel like if it were accomplishments alone i stood no shot
Sameeee
Like maybe I'm just mad bc I'm bad
Did you get stanny
But it feels much less interesting than other branches of math to me
Yeah like I like math
But doing these weird ass word problems just is not it
Yeah exactly
It feels very arbitrary tbh
But then again I never have acheived even as much as you. I put a grand total of 0 hours of prep in than got like 2 points above the median score 💀
I remember back in 8th grade I thought I was the shit in terms of math competitions
Then I met 4 USAJMO qualifiers in my grade in freshmen year and completely forgot about olympiads 💀
So I am a little weary to make general statements just bc people who have a little more compentance might find it more enjoyanle
rip 💀
yeah some people be insane
there was an 8th grader ik who full scored the amc 10
like what
like 5 of my friends who I didn't even know were interested in math at all scored in the 130s on amc 12 in sophomore year
actually gonna crash out
no frrr people who are that good at comp math but then say that math is boring make me so mad
You guys actually enjoy math competitions ?
hell nah
I have a friend who got into aime which is chill ig but then when he told me he hated math I was really annoye
no 💀
cause I thought I was good, until I realized I very much wasn't
That’s good, I thought you guys started doing it cause college or something😭
The only math I’m studying is for a test or quiz
During a school trip to Puerto Rico in freshman year, I met a girl who got USAJMO 8th grade, but says she doesn't even care about it because its not that important to her
no honestly like I don't want to hate on anyone but as someone who thinks math is genuinely a really beautiful subject, thinking its boring but then still study it intensely is a pet peeve of mine
Like no hate on comp math people, if you enjoy it thats awesone and good for you
Lmfao similar, I enjoy math but doing it too much is crazy work
but hating math but then doing it is kinda annoying
The only reason why I ever did any humanities stuff was for college and GPA
Honestly humanities are based
Actually does partly running an e-waste recycling organization count or nah
lowkey most of my favorite ECs are humanties based lol
10 hours of my life which I will never get back were dumped into writing several genuinely garbage position papers for MUN
My ECS are literally engineering, some chess, volunteering and summer internships/programs I should have kinda done something outside of this
That's actually incredibly cool
Honestly those sound cool. Tbh if you enjoy your ECs and learn stuff then mission accomplished imo.
thanks
If I reveal any more about the organization then you could trace it back to my identity lol
okay fair
I will say that It's recycled 500,000+ batteries and 100,000+ lb e-waste so far
Lowkey I love reading about people's niche/unique ECs because people do genuinly cool stuff
I did enjoy them but idk if they good enough lmfao
Woah that’s cool af
We've already recovered several dozen kilos of gold, platinum, cobalt, etc
all donated, of course
Damm that’s a good business 🤑
Saving waste could be as a non profit then for profit to sell the gold
🤑🤑🤑
colleges don't care about profit in ECs haha
LMFAOOO
How many kgs of gold did u guys get from 100,000 lbs of waste?
Also recycling E waste require like machinery and stuff right?
yeah same. Idk I think very few people think their ECs are 'good enough' bc so many people are so accomplished so it ends up feeling almost random
That’s true Yeha
we collaborated with existing industrial plants
we never actually tallied all that stuff, its just an estimate
Damm that’s sick
I mean approx or a minimum?
approx
all just based on readily googable statistics
It's not like we're gonna do a chemical composition analysis of a broken inkjet printer lmao
What are some of yours, aside from comps
Okay my ECs are really whack and I did a bunch of random stuff so it was hard to get it down to 4
Minimum 500 grams to max 10000 grams gold
So maybe around 1 million, platinum around 200-300k
Costs should be maybe around 100-300k
Could be a profitable business
Just depends on what specific item is recycled
true
would be awkward to switch from highschooler-led nonprofit to college student led startup though lmao
Lmfao, I mean this is something I’d start without going to college
Just capital intensive
Governments tax benefits and stuff would be crazy
So I ended up putting:
debate/speech/ethics bowl
doing random projects 💀 (desmos art and like rl stuff mostly)
math tutoring
online content creation (math yt channel+publishing dnd content online lol)
A lot of countries want u to recycle e waste, and countries that don’t do it so far is a major market
Alright too much business talk lmfaooo
thats awesome
I do some modding in factorio, which is probably the most embarassing thing on my applications 💀
Desmos art is so hard and cool
https://mods.factorio.com/user/SerotoninTheft if you wanna play any
thats actually based
That is not embarrassing it’s a cool hobby and passion
Thank you. There are people who did way cooler stuff that I, mine was kinda mid tier
what curves did you use
bezier, polynomial, trig, etc?
Agreed. I don't know what AOs think but I find ECs like this that are clearly motivated by passion way cooler and more impressive than "impressive" things that are clearly motivated by college apps
Okay so I actually did mostly music desmos bc I'm insane 💀
And then visual stuff was manual not with bezier curvers 💀
I also did a lot of basically visually explaining math problems in desmos which isn't exactly art but is similar, which was also done manually
So like this is an example https://www.desmos.com/calculator/7peplpcaz3
true
lowkey I'm kinda an awful person because I wrote my dead brother as motivation for one of my ecs when it had nothing to do with it
this is sick
Ngl my coolest EC is probably my passion project the rest is just the typical
That is SICCK
I didn’t know u can do this on Desmos
Are any of you already in mit?
I could never imagine loosing your brother that must be awful, and so I am both sorry for your loss and impressed by your ability to continue to push forward despite it. Definity no blame for putting that on your application bc obviously that's going to profoundly impact you
thanks ❤️
Its summer time looovin lovin in the summer time
That is def not being an awful person wtf 😭 this def had a major impact on you and you’re life 😭
Don’t hate on yourself😭
thanks man
it was an ear tumour which chemo couldn't remove
Currently, the best alternative treatment for radioresistant tumours is fast neutron therapy, which requires a robust neutron source
I'm currently building a small nuclear reactor in my garage, which functions as a variable, controllable neutron source, which I can use to conduct research on fast neutron therapy with in the medical labs at MIT when finished
I still feel cheap and exploitative by writing about it from that angle in my common app, but it's already been submitted
Bro that is not cheap and exploitative you’re trying to save lives
What are u on about 😭
Idk, I guess I just feel ethically biased against using life events like that
Bro no. That's a great project and that seems to be a very real motivation
Exactly
Thanks
If I were interested in medicine/chem, I would probably just do cancer research at universities directly, but I'm an aerospace major so I went this path instead
I think sometimes people do it designingly, which its definitely fair and good to push back on. On the other hand everything I see about your project makes it seem incredibly genuine. Like we've said its an awesome project and an incredible reason to do something.
I talked about this with a few of my friends, and one of them called it the holy grail of college app extracurricular motivations lmao
which one?
that's amazing!
what are your ECs/stats?
4.0/1600
I mostly do math and music related things, applied math/cs
ssp
ooh nice
I keep hearing amazing things about people's experiences at ssp and wishing I had applied
i got rejected lmfao
but i found a better in state program for myself which was nice
Yeah was rejected from sparc and mites but went to a program at my state school that I absolutely loved
No regrets
i didnt have anything like that so it was ssp or nothing 💀
what is bro waffling about. good luck getting anywhere in competitive math, cs, or physics in 2 years. maybe others are easier but 2 years is still a very short time. i've heard a lot of us IOI ppl have been preparing since middle or elementary school
may i ask what region you are from?
yea norcal
i just want mit to let me in like
what the freak
and harvard
and all the good ones like
oh so you also applied caltech rea for the same reason im assuming 💀
caltech especially hates it when kids from my region apply RD
(because they know they're not going to go)
tbh
idk why i REA caltech
i didnt want to early to harvard mit princeton or yale because they all defer everyone
just always deferring
so i wanted to early somewhere where id probably either get accepted or rejected straight up
so at least it did something
yeah that was my thought process lol
you'll probably get into everywhere else if you got into caltech rea tbh
dw abt it
i dont think so my essays peaked in ea
i wrote some BAD essays
hella corny
for rd
thats so real
EA ED essays were so buns
its fine as long as we clutch our rd essays
no my rd essays were the bad ones
ea was where it was at
i had more time to write them
i rushed my essays for my jan 2nd schools really bad
my rd why school essays were kinda interesting ngl
that long ahh 500 word essay fucked me uppp
i mainly just talked abt 1 or 2 things and related them to myself instead of "random bullshit go"
i wanna cry bc of my harvard essays
i had no idea what to do
dude
i feel like i shot myself in the foot with them
my columbia essays were booty cheeks
they asked TOO MANY questions
give me 250 words please thats all i need
nonono they were onto smth i had a chance to get out a few personality traits
not whatever 100-150 bs they were pulling
i think my mit essays were solid except that "how have u gone thru ur educational journey in a unique way" question
omg
yeah same
i forgot abt that essay
it was hard to write that one without being like im not like the other girls
like tf were we supposed to write abt????
i ended up writing abt my debate club... 💀
lets hope they ignore that essay
ate
i had my questbridge friend read it and he told me he didnt have to do that question 💔
hes so lucky
💔
ugh
let's hope they ignore my entire app and just let me in 🙏
for real actually
Yep same!
top 2 worst takes on this server 💔
@analog canopy (im making some assumptions here from our one mutual) you may be out of touch with the average person because not everyone can pick up olympiad stem subjects that easily
that's exactly what i'm saying. you can't just assume everyone has that much talent
our mutual certainly does
maybe you also do
but not everyone is in the small minority
yeah but even those ppl take a long time
that's the thing
espcially since i know one of the people you're alluding to who has been doing competitive programming since 5th grade
those really talented people
yea but that sharp new kid doesn't necessarily get to ioi or other olympiads like that in 2 years. it's still a process
lmao when i opened my decision i was literally running like 101 degrees
just opened in bed on my phone
good luck to y'all
Did you get in??
i think so?
1550
nicee
ngl im sure my 1460 is gonna be the thing that gets me rejectteed
Hi did you get in as an international?
do they consider us citizens living abroad international?
no
No
I think once you get past AIME style stuff, the proof based stuff is much more fun
People shouldn’t think math comps r just wordy problems they r more like a proof u spend 1-2 hour trying to build
(In most cases)
They probably were and you didn’t realize it
People are just
Shady about working on this stuff LOL
Okay fair
yeah people gatekeep hella
I don't think most people realize that
Olympiads are a good way of getting in.. if you're actually interested in them, and dedicated enough
Do not actually do them unless you like it
It's not a golden ticket - if anything it can actually be detrimental because you're burning yourself out on studying things you don't like
The reason why colleges like them so much is because they require a lot of effort and dedication; it shows that you're genuinely skilled, and way above average at that
But if you'd much rather spend that effort and dedication on something else, then go for that instead
(That's not to say they're bad, I just feel like people here have a really skewed view of what olympiads are like)
(If you like them, do them! But please don't commit years of your life towards getting an olympiad medal just because you heard it was good for college)
Yeah lol the key is to explore and do things you like
Fwiw some of the best academic conversations I've had here have been about decidedly non-STEM topics as well as STEM topics
And within the STEM subjects you can be interested in them in ways that don't involve doing some kind of science olympiad lol
e.g. what if you're really fascinated by topology, abstract algebra or some other topic in math that's definitely not in AIME/AMC lol
Did mit stop accepting updates
Ofc there's the proof aspect for math olympiads, but that's a skill you can develop without subjecting yourself to years of practice on a type of math that you don't necessarily like
TL; DR just do what you want 💀
Tbh if this whole place was filled with just olympiad kids then it would lowk be miserable
Ofc the science olympiad community presence here on campus is great, but it's great as one group in the diversity in interests and ideas present on campus
It's the weekend 😭
Additionally Monday was a federal holiday
They'll get back to you when they're back in office
i agree! i tried taking AMC all 4 years of high school and it was NOT my thing (never qualified for AIME and i didnt like it) but i found other stuff that i rly liked
and HS has been much more worthwhile
i have classmates who are genuinely passionate about math and they do math problems for fun in class, and they're the type of people who excel in math Olympiads and stuff which is where it would be a good activity fit
what’s your major
mech e probably
so AIME honestly is not that relevant to my major anyway
nope I got one in
I sent one Sunday and got one
Hmm
Should I resend
Cuz I sent it like Saturday 3am
Does anyone have reccomendations for stuff to do in the Cambridge area
I'll basically have a free day friday so I'll probably do a tour + mit museum but idk what else besides walk around harvard
Partially because everything is so expensive 💀
Lmao are you allowed down there as a tourist?
I totally would just for fun
Not the opening doors with warning signs part 💀
Harvard square is rlly fun
go to the admissiosn office and beg for acceptance
Guys I does mit have a backlog
Or did they alr decide to reject me
And need no further additions to my rejected po
Since its in the rejected pile already
No it's actually going to be so embarrassing
I'm with my father and he does not understand how mit could not care about demonstrated interest
So he is for sure going to try and say some stuff and I'm just going to have to sit there 💀
real
They should just tell me rn
I alr know I got rejected, why keep it a secret smh
Yeah I'll definitely go there
My ap lit teacher from junior year started talking about restaurants he loved in harvard square only to be devastated when he learned they were all gone
Wait I was wondering the same thing 😭
Bc I sent am update a week ago and no response
Real 😔
@rancid apex do u happen to know sorry for the ping 🙏
Idk they’ll prolly see soon
Ngl I think they were just working through a backlog
They responded to my update email in an hour
Ok
so if we want to send an update we just email them?
Yep
hmmm
So the fact that they ghosted me might really mean I am rejected?
Checks out 😔
Nah there's no way
They were probably just processing a ton of emails over the weekend and didn't respond to every one
yeah iirc they only have 4 people answering emails
Lmao that's wild
we went to tatte in harvard square and it was goated
the boston public garden and library are cool asw
Thank you for the recs I'll add them 🙏
They don't really accept extra recs in general, so I probably wouldn't
nice hfhf
i wonder if everything is still frozen
doesn't hurt
i sent in a 3rd one
🤷♂️
i dont believe they accept any significant material post-app submission save for the fun form
even outside of mit ive never really heard of a school taking an extra lor
like maybe an update to your awards sure
but an entire lor is p big
i added a LOR post-submission, there's an option for it and they told me they received it
that was back in january though
were you at the threshold alr?
so at this point might be late
like max amount
i submitted 2 teachers + 1 counselor beforehand, not sure if thats the threshold
lemme look :p
You will only be able to submit your application with two teacher evaluations and one school counselor/Secondary School Report. You may also include up to one optional supplemental evaluation.
so you had room it seems
oh yeah same thing yay
yeah so you have room for a 3rd i suppose
for some reason i assumed this kiddo hit cap
and was like
"can i submit another anyways"
i mean he might've 😭 LMAO
hopefully it works out for u hehe @grave bronze
LMAO
id assume theres a sort order that isnt necessarily in the order received
like it could be
but also if it is that could result in a higher chance of aos duping email responses
my theory that has zero proof is that they divide it up somehow whether by region you applied or something else
so if you have a low email count in your region or more people taking care of it youre getting faster responses
Yeah I have room too I’m just wondering if it’s too late
Sorry you guys, I assumed you were both at cap haha
Yeah I guess it can't hurt
They're still accepting updates in general
yo email was finally responded to
I love the subtle implication that they don't want any more email updates
Lmao
How many did u send 💀
This is my second
This was my second
Are they even still considering them?
They must be done with at least like 20% of the apps no?
When did you send yours?
yeah probably...
Last Saturday 5pm
idk. It was something that I think could impact the decision, but more likely than not it won't be considered
Yes mine was one sentence
Yeah of course I’d send it as well
I’m still waiting for results from 1 competition as well and I’m gonna send them the moment the results r released
Same like mine was smth new to my app entirely
I think they evaluate in rounds tho so they might look at ur app several rounds
So if ur still in the running it might be a big thing
Like ex: aime 3x then finally usamo (not my case my similar idea)
Making USAMO is wild
I regret my choices bc my email update was before FUN was due 💀 I submitted FUN early bc I thought there was no shot I would win anything at the comp but then to my surprise I got 1st. So I literally should have just waited to submit FUN
Guys would it not be funny if they actually did it like that like you’d get a notification every time u qualified in a round
Lmao
💀💀💀💀
Yeah same
This would decrease my stress
I would know early
Whenever I’m still considered or not
Or rejected
Yeah lowkey good idea no?
Ye
I mean Oxbridge has their interviews
Ok from what I’ve heard
As like the 2nd round
Yh
💀💀💀
my condolences
Might have to pray to all the gods tonight
But I’m sure they don’t have caps like that
If the pool is rly competitive the AO is allowed to bring idk more apps
I hope
bro you said you had something similar to usamo. Trust
RSI😭😭😭
Ikr
Same age🫣?
Yea
Oh shit
What they have harvard already??
