I have heard that, but tbh it doesn't really make sense (especially when MIT explicitly says it doesn't)
There probably is a slight difference because of geographical differences, but the same goes for a lot of other factors (like, you're probably more likely to get accepted into MIT if you're upper class - that doesn't mean they're filtering for that though, it's just that people from that demographic tend to have more opportunities available to them)

The overarching theme I've heard is that it matters.. but like, it's not that important, it's just to give the admissions officers extra context / to know what you're like as a person
