Tbh Stanford's campus was incredible but the place also failed the vibe check hard

I remember this one moment during Stanford's admit weekend where I overheard some students randomly shittalking MIT

As far as I can remember they were, essentially talking about how it's oh-so stressful over there

In a really condescending tone

And more than that they lowk just seemed kinda miserable

Like, I dunno how sad of an environment you have to be in to act so miserable and stuck-up at the same time, but that's the sort of vibe I got from the place

My student host didn't help either 💀

Man kept me up for hours after midnight because he just let his friends come in and yap for all that time 😭

But that wasn't really the problem

One friend of his stayed to talk an hour or two after the others left and ngl they had a really interesting philosophical discussion/conversation about their goals for life

But also the main topic of that conversation was how they felt that Stanford had tons of, in a sense, "material" resources, but bereft in "spiritual" ones

Spiritual in the sense of lacking the feeling of, sort of, greater purpose, meaning, value, etc.

So, yeah, not the greatest impression 💀

Like, the Stanford Students I met were really intelligent--of course they are--but like, they lowk just seemed kinda empty in a way

Like, it's not very obvious on the outside, but it was also pretty clear when you looked into it a bit more

I also spoke with a member of the FGLI community on Stanford's campus, more specifically I asked a question somewhere along the lines of whether they felt like they belonged on campus or not

But yeah that's a TL;DR of why I didn't choose Stanford 💀

Why I chose MIT is another discussion lmao but the TL;DR is that the people at MIT really were (and are!!) a lot more enjoyable to be around, at least in my experience

Just anecdotally though, Stanford's Dean of Admissions spent his speech bragging about how cracked their admitted student body was, whereas MIT's Dean of Admissions, instead, recited our own (awful) science jokes that they asked us to put in our FUN forms alongside spring grades

Lowk I think MIT manages to avoid duck syndrome (though obv other stressors are still present) honestly in large part because the people here are very, very ready to say "I'm cooked 💀"

But just as an overall trend the HASS (Humanities, Arts, Social Science) classes at MIT tend to be more forgiving with grading

Princeton/Stanford/MIT/any of these schools, it's all the same general (sweaty) trend. They admit people who care about their work and work hard, often to the detriment to their own mental health. To a certain extent, complaining about your workload is part of a healthy mental process. Cultures are very local to the major/group/friend group, but there are departments associated with more stress. I think the important thing in general is to make sure students know where the support mechanisms are and to destigmatize them

when i was an undergrad, there was some stat like 75% of students visit mental health at some point in their academic career. But nobody ever admitted to doing that. I think one of the positives of the pandemic is that it's more acceptable to seek help, though mental health resources are now stretched extremely thin
