Yeah MIT has a ton of people who are super passionate (not just about academics btw!!!) and wanna make a meaningful difference in their field and in the world (including students and professors)

*MIT is still 40% CS, but, eh 💀

There's a home for everyone on campus

I have to say that conversations with MIT ppl have been some of the most interesting and meaningful discussions I've ever had in my life (like, even with my interiewer for the application process lmfaooooo, which is really saying something)

Ofc there's all the different student groups on campus, all the clubs etc. but there's also a whole bunch of other communities too + at a Boston school (not just MIT, but boston area in general) you have access to the the other colleges in the area

MIT students can cross register at H*rvard and vice versa, Wellesley, and MassArt

But tbh though the college environments probably intersect most through the MIT frats, which are scattered all across the Boston area

Ppl from all over will show up to MIT frats for the parties (and I'm being fr the parties are crazy)

I have to say that I was put in a frat for CPW and the brothers there were incredibly chill, kind people (*not quite as chill during parties, but you get the vibe)

MIT's fraternities are very close to the other universities in the area, so a lot of ppl from BU, Northeastern, and other colleges in the area pop into MIT frats for all the parties

Some of them are so close to BU that they're legit right in the middle of BU's campus

The work is difficult but the workload is reasonable and there are an enormous amount of academic resources to help you

Just to give an example from one building with a lot of clubs

There's:

• A makerspace where someone played Megalovania with a massive tesla coil
• A club completely dedicated to building model railroads (It's one of the oldest clubs on campus)
• A team that's literally building a race car
• An organization within MIT that's dedicated to designing/engineering solutions to global poverty issues (One example is that they're currently researching methods to effectively cool spaces in areas where electricity is intermittent or just not available)
• There are welding rooms, workshops, and all the other tools needed to facilitate those projects

For the arts there's a ton of a capella groups around campus, theater groups, performing arts (e.g. music) groups, and visual arts clubs

Ppl are restarting the game development club

One example is that there's a LARPing club on campus that was founded by an alumni like decades ago and he (and his wife, who is also an MIT alumni) still comes around sometimes to run games

(I went to one of their games and it was really fun :3)

There was a poker tournament a few days ago, there's a bunch of CS groups running hackathons

There are clubs about cooking (they make pop up restaurants sometimes), communities centered around coffee

There's a group that runs movies in the same lecture hall that intro CS classes are held in

There's a group that's responsible for running the Banana Lounge, i.e. what they do is literally manage thousands of bananas being delivered into campus each week

There's all the fraternities, sororities, and independent living groups, each with their own personalities

And ofc there's ppl doing stuff individually too

she talked about why the application was the way it was, what they are looking for, and that you should apply even if your not sure

but also like they want to see passsion, and cool things that you do in your normal life
