  • Location/Region: I would prefer urban/suburb, but really anything that has a population of 10,000 or more would be what I’m looking for. I currently live in a small town in Kansas, so I really want to get into a big city.

  • Major: Secondary English Education

  • GPA/Test Scores: GPA: 4.0 Ranked 1/80 (school doesn’t have weighted gpa) ACT: 29 SAT: Taking in August 2024. May or may not send in ACT score depending on what I get on the SAT.

  • Curriculum: I really just want a good education program, I’m not looking for anything outside of my major.

  • Size: I’m slightly partial to smaller class sizes, but a couple of the schools I’m applying to have larger sizes so I’ve moved past that.

  • Costs: I will definitely be needing aid. My parents are divorced and my dad (non-custodial parent) has remarried and they make at least $100-120,000 a year, while my mom makes $55,000. My dad has only set aside $10,000 and my mom can’t afford to help pay, so cost is a big factor. I realize I’m kind of screwed in this department, but I want to keep student loans as close to zero as possible.

  • Schools You're Currently Looking At: My dream school is Vanderbilt, because they have great programs and only look at custodial parent finances, and I’m applying ED1 there. I’m also applying to Grinnell ED2 for their early decision scholarship which should cover the difference between out-of-pocket cost and need-based aid. My safety schools are University of Kansas and Emporia State University (to which I have a full ride). Also planning to apply to UChicago, also only look at custodial parent, and Columbia.

  • Additional: Traveling is not a deal-breaker in any way, shape or form. My parents have told me they will help me get anywhere I am accepted. The main problem with a lot of my target schools is that they give no aid because they’re public flagships/state schools.

Have you thought about private schools?

I would look at Oberlin College, UNC, Stetson, and Drexel. There ae also some schools that grant tuition assistance for good grades or if you get admitted to their honors college - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1k4iWwD45UO9y0I3_30xbf8k_xZE93nDspJ0s1XNbLxQ/edit?usp=sharing
