Schools: Duke, UPenn
Intended major: Global Health (I want to pursue medical entomology/vector biology/neglected tropical disease, which is very niche and not many schools outside of the top offer it)
Similarities: To be honest, it is primarily academics that I find similar. Otherwise I think the schools are pretty different.

Duke
Duke Pros:
-Global Health Co Major
-Best Campus (especially Architecture) in US (better than UPenn)
-lots of faculty in my field
-graduate centers dedicated to stuff like virology, and has top 5 programs in all of the many disciplines I’m interested in
-better study abroad
-I have a duke poster in my room
-I like their “rare languages” program
-cooler name

Duke Cons:
-Farther Away
-probably none of my friends will go there
-Blue is only a 7.5/10 color imo
-rivalry with my state school 🤭🤭
-Will give less aid
-slightly less ethnically diverse than Penn
-Carolina’s favoritism

UPenn

#

UPenn Pros:
-Has Global/public Health track for their Health and Societies majors
-has multiple classes I want to take precisely
-Perfect Distance
-SUPER good aid, I would get full tuition coverage just from Finaid.
-A2C to UPenn Pipeline
-I can say I go to an Ivy

UPenn:

  • doesn’t have a well defined study abroad
    -I’ve heard it’s elitist (at least more than duke) which is kind of scary to me as a homeschooler
    -Penn State
    -Philly is a more classic “big city” compared to Durham.
    -conversely, I’ve heard UPenn is like it’s own bubble
  • I might disappoint my Duke buddies on A2C 😔

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Which college has a higher AR for/is more accommodating to homeschoolers
  • Which one places a higher emphasis on ED
  • General stuff about the culture.
  • If there is some way to demonstrate which school has a better opportunity for me to become a “trailblazer” in my field
  • Which school has a more flexible curriculum
  • Which school will allow me to actually have a life

Addendum: Academics is most important factor for me. I really want diversity, a good study abroad, a beautiful campus (if it looks like a castle or Hogwarts it’s good in my book), and I want somewhere temperate. Also, location is a HUGE factor for me. I’d say Duke is my limit distance. I have a lot of pets at home and I will need to come home to take care of them and to see my family at LEAST OCCASIONALLY during the school year.

elitism isnt as prevalent as people make it seem, just make normal friends. penn bubble is very real tho (but breaking out and exploring philly is very fun)
