it's to increase their yield rate and decrease their acceptance rate ( and inflate their sense of prestige)

they just assume you'll not attend their college since you'll go somewhere better

anyways it's a pretty shitty practice and purdue engineering/cs definitely doesn't yield protect. it's like ~10-15% oos

most of the stanford, harvard, mit accepted students ive seen got rejected/waitlisted from usc

if someone else applied from your school to the same college and possibly got an acceptance over you even if your profile is clearly better, clearly

if theres no clear difference between you and your friend then its mostly not a yield protect

and if you have insane grades like maybe a 5/5 weighted, 4/4 uw gpa, 1600 sat, or/and paired with insane ecs, or ranked 1 in your school

there are many factors, most of the time it's insane grades paired with insane ecs that makes it a clear yield protect

but ofc if your essays have zero interest of joining even with insane ecs, grades, theyll probably reject/defer you. if you're deferred, they expect a classy loci from you to show if you're actually interested at this point

at the end these colleges are businesses, raising their yield %, lowering acceptance all make them more money in the long run, regardless of student interest
