- the person informs the college ahead of time they are choosing not to enroll. if this is done before RD decisions come out, good news, one more seat for someone else. if this is done after RD, then whoever is most qualified from the waitlist gets bumped up into the seat.
- the person does not inform the college and they miss the enrollment deadline, inwhich case the college reaches out to a waitlisted student and offers them admission
