It depends on whether or not you're a student who's interestged in research and if that aligns with the overall narrative of your application. If so, it wouldn't come across shallow IF you actually talk about a professor who does research that you've already expressed interest in in your application. Most of the time, the essays I read students will say "I'm really passionate about Biology. Also, I would want to do research with Dr. G who studies coding applications in physics" that's how 90% of the professor name drops are written and it quite literally makes no sense, because that research had nothing to do with anything previously mentioned.

I think a lot of people believe that all they have to do is namedrop something, for example, "I have always been passionate about biology which is why I want to do research with Dr. G". or "One thing I would want to get out of my Duke experience is to participate in DIBS".

The issue there is they only namedropped professor and program names and thought that was enough. However, you always have to explain why that professor or that program interests you/what you would want to get out of that experience and making sure that rationale makes sense in the context of your interests and your application

I don't know if i'm the best Dukie to answer that question, I'm of the personal belief that Duke gravitates toward people who are willing to put in the work to do all the essays. That aside, answering all of them only helps your application because it gives them more context they otherwise wouldn't have had. I'm sure they admit people that don't do all the essays. But, the essays historically used to only be the diversity/LGBTQ essays so they were TRULY optional, i.e. if it did not apply to you, don't answer. I feel like they created these other prompts for students to choose from so that EVERYONE could have additional essays to respond to. But yeah I think it's a general thing to assume that optional essays aren't really optional regardless of the school, you should do them all :).

yes, you can. I am a biomedical engineer bur my research mentors are both neurobiologists. One of our ECE machine learning professors is actually a civil engineering researcher. My friend is a "biomechanical" engineer bit she only has a mechanical engineering degree.

Engineering is suuuper interdisciplinary, you just get to decide what you want to be clasicslly trained in and what you believe you can bring to the table to solve new problems. If you only had one kind of engineer on a project, you're going to be really limited in terms of how you can problem-solve.
