I visited uchicago in person yesterday, and before the tour the dean of admissions gave a talk about what uchicago is looking for. It was in a church, so sorry about the echoey audio lol.

Notable highlights:
--someone wrote an essay along the lines of "I like eating smart people, and there are a lot of smart people at uchicago so I want to go there so I can eat them all" and got in (7:45)
--somebody's essay was a fanfic of their parents having sex (they did NOT get in) (9:24, context starts at 8:40)
--one time someone wrote an essay (possibly joking?) arguing for "the re-domestication of women) (10:00)
--don't worry about tests; in fact if you're >= 25th percentile it is actually advised to submit test scores (2:50)
--uchicago superscores tests (4:05)
--bE wHo YoU aRe (4:55, 11:00)
--teacher and counselor reccomendation letters are a HUGE make-or-break (section starting at 13:05)
-- in selective schools, "probably a quarter of applications are rejected because of their teacher recs" (13:37, see also 18:05)
-- teachers don't have to be super famous or anything, as long as they slobber over you like a god reincarnated (23:59)
-- 18:32 talks about who you should ask for letters, how many, what subjects, etc.

--uchicago will take absolutely anything you send them, regardless of when (21:42)

--I only started recording around a third of the way through, and I remember before that he said that out of the 43,000 the top 10,000 are all equally amazing and wonderful, and if the 1,700 that get in were to disappear and be replaced by the first 1,700 on the waitlist then it would be practically identical
--apparently there are so many amazing people applying that regional admissions officers cry over their applicants (can't find the specific timestamp but he explains the whole admissions process starting at 23:31 and also at 39:10)
--there is no cap on the # of applicants from any given school (40:24)
--uchicago will favor different majors more or less depending on yearly needs (41:34)

--ED1 rarely defers, almost always admit/deny (42:36)

I also got one from a teacher over the summer who seemed cool with writing the letter, but a week or so after I left the final grades came back and it turns out I failed the final test (got a B in the class though lol). I really should have had my old high school counselor give a supplementary letter and replaced the summer math teacher with my current year american polsci teacher, since she seemed to really like me as a student

this is not true at all. Colleges want you to think exactly what you're saying, but in reality, you don't have to prove anything to not attend.

For all colleges, the agreement is not legally binding, and you are not under contract to attend.

Should you reject your ED school or apply ED to a school you're not fully committed to? Usually no, but that doesn't mean it's now the end of the world.

To be clear, you should not apply early decision to a school you do not want to go to nor one that you're fully committed to, because even though you're not making a legal agreement, you are making an agreement of sorts, and it looks bad to back out of that (on you and your high school), but to say that those who apply ED are "under a binding contract" or that "the college will notify all your other colleges that you didn't adhere to the contract" is not true. Colleges can rescind admission for whatever reason they want, and abuse of early decision is a good way to get that, but early decision is not binding.
