Im not sure if it matters, but there’s no harm in opting right away anyway since it’s not binding. I think some UCs rarely admit ppl off waitlist before May 1st, but a majority of the people from the waitlist r admitted after the commitment date

It really doesn't matter for any of the UCs as long as you opt in before the waitlist deadline. I got UCSB offer from waitlist before May 1st(if this happens they just keep the deadline at May 1st) and I got UCI offer after May 1st( they give you 7-10 days to respond).
