hey y’all! so i’m trying to help my friend start a college list for my friend, and i’m not really sure where to start.
she’s hoping to go into law school out of undergrad, and she’s hoping to have an undergrad double major in english and poli sci, or business.

stats: 31 ACT, 3.96 GPA. 6/58. rigorous course load.

size: definitely on the larger side, hoping for a noticeable sports scene. party scene not necessary although those two are often mutually inclusive.

curriculum: no opinions. not averse to any open/liberal arts curriculum. she’ll probably be in the liberal arts college anyway.

location: she’s pretty inflexible on this. she prefers a midwest and east coast colleges, and definitely nowhere in the south. she would hope to be in or near a big city, somewhere where she doesn’t need to be car dependent.

costs: i don’t have exact efc figures, but she’s in a strange situation. she’s low income, but due to living on a farm her assets are quite high, which unfortunately disqualifies her from a decent chunk of need aid. merit aid opportunities are def a must, and she would by far prefer cheaper schools.

regardless of whether or not she’s “ivy” material, she’s really looking for good, realistic schools that have good law school placement and are good at her majors. thank you guys so much for your help :)

we have umn, madison, and uiowa as safeties at the moment.

There's no combined undergrad + law degree. You have to apply separately for law school.

we know!

we were just hoping to keep law school placement in mind.

Ah gotcha! Law school doesn't necessarily care about your major, but yes, having colleges with good pre-law advising and legal studies will def help

yeah that’s what we were looking for. the majors listed above were just what she’s thinking of. she might do commercial/business law, so if the admit process into business schools aren’t too difficult, she might see that route

Hmmm sounds like a larger school will be a good fit since she's considering a lot of options

#

sorry just reading this post right now oh okay yeah she wants a large school lol

#

Georgetown, George Washington, American are great for poli sci

#

All in Washington DC

Here are some other recommendations (all offering merit aid):
Reaches: NYU, UMich Ann Arbor, BU, UC Berkeley (in CA), Boston College, Northwestern, Villanova, Carnegie Mellon, Northeastern
Targets: Binghamton, URoch, Brandeis, George Washington, Dickinson, Howard (historically black uni)
Safeties: Purdue, UIUC, Indiana University, American University, Ohio State

Georgetown and Tufts were on my original list but they don’t give merit aid (though they are both great options)

Marietta College has a 3 and 3 law program with Cleveland State, where you do 3 years at each place and earn your law degree. I wanted to go into Pre-Law for a while and our stats are pretty similar, so I have a whole list I can comment down below with facts to help her!
