Schools: Northwestern vs Berkeley
Intended major: Engineering/CS, Applied Math
Similarities: They’re good schools.

Northwestern
School 1 Pros:

  • Chicago is cool
  • I get to do engineering/cs
  • Smaller school so less competition?
  • Safe town
  • Easy to pick up double major/degree

School 1 Cons:

  • Smaller school so less ability to connect with people?
  • Quarter system

Berkeley
School 2 Pros:

  • I like the social scene
  • Many friends there
  • Brother lives close by
  • San Francisco is cool
  • Applied math is good at Berkeley
  • Nearby good opportunities
  • Big asian community
  • Was my dream school for 4 years before not getting engineering 💀

School 2 Cons:

  • Grade deflation?
  • Tons of people so super competitive?
  • Clubs are hard to get into
  • I don’t get to do engineering/cs
  • Town isn’t the most safe <- not that important
#

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Is it that hard to transfer into Berkeley L&S CS now?
  • Is it hard to pick up a minor in cs/engineering?
  • Is applied math a good enough major (I’m deathly scared of job insecurity)
  • Which is better for grad school?
  • How bad is the grade deflation at Berkeley/competitiveness too
  • Opportunities

Addendum:
I really like cities and fun social scenes/making friends. Education is a big priority but it isn’t everything but I am scared of not landing a good job 💀.

Applied math is an amazing undergraduate major to have. Especially in Fields like quantitative finance and finance, undergrad majors are most commonly applied / pure math and physics
