true, in state transfer pathway is so nice
reading was the worst bc i read slow
dude idk why but i canāt do standardized testing math
and it isnāt because iām bad at math itās just i canāt grasp the standardized stuff because thatās not how i learned it
reading sucked for me
SAME
i was in this weird accel program at a college so we did everything wonky and really rushed
i took alg 2 before hs so i never really remembered half the shit i needed to for the math section
š„“
sweet
hbu
ap calc is nice
super fun
i finished calc 3 last semester, taking discrete math this sem
thats amazing
indeed
when u go to college ur basically gonna be done with math
if u go to harvard u could take math55
yeah i get the credits for it all as well since itās dual enrollment and iāve verified it transfers basically everywhere except for ivies
stingy
lol
also a lot of their classes have analysis mixed in
which is smth most colleges teach separately
yeah gatech, harvard, and university of arizona
did u get in
harvard deferred
uofa $140k merit scholarship + honors college for astro
gatech ea2 comes out friday
i didn't apply early anywhere
good luck on harvard and GT
im sure GT will accept u
i shouldnāt have applied harvard rea but my loci was good
iāve heard calc bc was a prereq lmao
not true
one of my in state friendās counselor said that 90% of attendees have taken calc bc
plenty of gt students got accepted without taking calculus
but i did hear taking calc at GT was not that great
thats true
im only taking AB unfortunately my school does not offer BC
yeah i think thatās totally fine tbh
the thing is i donāt have a strong physics background
yeah plus a lot of GT students take summer classes to graduate on time
especially math
what physics are u taking
last yr i took a 140 level astrophysics course dual enrollment, this yr iām taking AP physics 1 (first year offered since pre pandemic) and physics w/ calc dual enrollment
i donāt have phys c or e&m or modern or anything
my school doesnt offer ap
feeder?
ah kk
lol i wish i went to a feeder
but im also not rich enough to pay tuition
same
yeah LOL
i go to a public as well
my public school is not the best
i just got lucky and was able to dual enroll
not the worst
Thanks so much! I know my field pretty well but Iāll brush up on my second option too
i dual enroll at a technical cc so barely any math related courses like physics and such
omg same
but also bc my SAT was bad so i couldnt go to another cc with better "top level" courses
i had to beg for discrete
we only have a technical cc around here
they were like āweāll let you take physics w calc but youāre going to have to pay for discreteā
and then i never had to pay
they let me take classes for free
which is nice but iām def going to have to pay for this class key unless theyāre generous enough to pay for me by friday
ok i def have to work on this stupid 25 page proof paper but iāll be back later
same i get to take classes for free too
the only top level class i took was principles of chem
it was so hard
perk of being in a low income areas with good grades
sounds hard
my school is rlly wonky in the sense that weāre some random public with like 3 accessible aps and an ib program
okay bye!
a really half assed ib program
yeah iām going to get so distracted šš
yeah
iām in ib
šµāš«
this semester itās IBDP + AP + dual
wow are u gonna be val or something
so sal
yep
nice im like top 20% of my class š
thereās way too much pressure being val/sal tbh i think itās better to just be in the top quartile
yeah agreed
thereās no distinguishable difference between top 3 other than ecs
iāve practically died doing ecs to make myself competitive for t20s
same p much
i think my essays for stanford with probably get me in
this one girl at my school already got in through questbridge
i got lucky so i do educational policy with my state dept of education; creating curriculum and programs and stuff
then i have a few other things like an astro club i made, a few yrs of regional math league awards, ~9y of national piano awards, some volunteer work in stem, and a summer program
nice!
val got into an ivy this yr
proud of him fr but i want that to be me too
which ivy
iāve been told my essays are not mid but not insanely good
dartmouth
so hopefully my āpretty goodā essays w/ my ecs and course rigor is what gets me in somewhere decent
idk if i'll get in lol but as long as i end up at GT im good
i didnt have any interviews lol
nah you got this tbh
if none of the colleges were test optional id end up at my state school
so i got really lucky
not UGA
GSU
i forgot UGA was the state school lol
i actually didnt apply to UGA
my parents wanted me to be at home so it was GSU or GT
thank you :)
anyways i dont want to distract you from your work lol
i'll talk to you later
mine didnāt rly do that
he asked me why Stanford and thatās it
and I replied with specific stuff
Hey! Sorry this is a little late. I am also wanting to do astrophysics, and there is actually an astrophysics pathway under physics at Stanford! They also have some other cool ones if you are interested in other fields of physics: https://bulletin.stanford.edu/programs/PHYS-BS
dude same my math section dragged down my SAT lol
fr, had 740R&W/660M š
i wanted to retake but literally nobody would let me
parents said no, counselor said no
worst part is, i missed like 9 math
that should've been a 700 lol but nooooo
mood I don't know what questions I got wrong but I'm 100% sure they're all some sort of careless mistakes š
yup
i noticed i made 3 directly after the test
for example, i forgot how to put in 0 for free response iirc š
yeah and the craziest part is that I'm doing well in advanced math so uhhhhhh i just can't seem to do simple math for some unknown reason
fr like i literally jumped from AB to BC just now, it's not like i'm stupid in math
there's not a day that goes by where i don't wonder how much better off i would be if i did that retake
probably could've jumped my math to 750ish
honestly I don't think I could have done that much better because I'd probably get careless mistakes again, difference is just how many š cos I got 750 lol
I also only took it once so
thinking about my friend who went in w almost no prep and did the same SAT as me and got math 760 like š
yeah it's always the what if
rip
800 math is so easy
on the other hand, i bomb english
lol english was ggs for me
i got a perfect writing score and missed like 7 reading iirc
wanna exchange scores
it'd be the ultimate superscore
100%
i took it twice
got 620 reading, 790 math first time. Then 730 reading, 800 math second time
Omg thank you!
Yes
ok can you help me
bc i got 790 english 730 math on psat
how do you study
on psat? lol
you canāt get a 790 eng
the max is 760
Got interview
adjusted lol
my question still stands, though
Stanny interview tonight. I applied for econ. What should I know?
Everything
Well I have about an hour or two to research š¬
Just know why you want to do econ, why stanford, and stuff abt ur school/town, ur leadership, and that kinda stuff
Prepare some good questions to ask
Drop some for me
Mine is tuesday
make sure you have a good interview starter
like something that can effectively lead into the conversation
in most of the interviews i've done, it's a good way to prolong convo and help them know more about you
i think if you have a school uniform, it's a good starter lol
DROP ALL THE TIPS mine is monday (Iāve seen ur ones that youāve posted and will defo try get a good convo starter but also if any other onesš)
Do you think they might ask me about my intended major and ask specific questions in that subject? (Any Earth Systems majors?š )
yup hey certainly will
they'll at least ask you about your interests
the best way to attack it is to talk about it, then ask about theirs and try to make connections
it usually flows into a conversation if successful
Is there a way for me to tell the admissions committee that I am doing taking physics C next sem in addition to what I have submitted already?
Oh okay - I didnāt realise that they talk about their interests too
perhaps an email?
Howd it go
What kinda questions
Good, I think. Lots of "tell me about yourself"
I'd describe an activity and she'd then ask more questions related to it. I asked her a few questions too
But I didn't have to get super specific about why stanford or anything like that
yo guys for stanford deferrals should i just use their deferral form or also send in a LOCI?
i feel like only the deferral form should be fine but ive seen ppl also send in a LOCI
I thought LOCI was to get off the waitlist.
interview in 30 š
Gl
They really don't hold much weight š
yall are sending locis rly late
i sent mine within a week
idk if it makes a difference
I need to start mine š
usually if itās within January itās fine
is it normal to not have gotten an interview?
yeah if there arenāt any alumni available in your area
they arenāt based on merit or anything itās just based on availability so it u didnāt get one itās normal and wonāt count against u in any way
my interviewer said if i do get admitted he would know immediatelyā¦did anyone elseās say this? does that mean on decision release date or earlier?
i think it means on decision day
a lot of colleges let your interviewer know if you got in on decision day so that they can congratulate you
ah ok thanks!
is there a place to upload updates like pdfs? Or do we have to write them out
my interviewer said the same thing! he also said there is an alumni/offer holder day where he would talk to me again about the whole process
Getting no emails nor interview request... Feeling do down and anxious rn š
Nah im not getting my hopes up, just curious cus none of my other interviewers mentioned it before
Real
Does Stanford even care about loci
where do u send it to
is there an email or in the admissions portal?
just wondering
email ur local admissions rep
oh okay thanks
Any last minute interview tips? š mine is tomorrow morning
Give em a big smoochy sloppy kiss
CAID is common app number
Based will do x
Guys that was so roughhhh
Im pretty sure most schools do them until like late-mid february
So u still have a good chance
okay thanks!
Very generic questions, mainly surrounding my ECs, what I bring to campus why Iām applying, nothing too bad. He went into my ECs a lot (one of mine is reforming holocaust education at my school) and he asked me āif I could wave a magic wand what would I change about educating about the holocaustā
So I replied starting with a sentence/thought filler by saying āthis is a difficult questionā and I was abt to phrase my reply but he butted in and said āwell ur applying to Stanfordā
Likeā¦. mf I know
It was so mad I was acc shocked and was like⦠I know haha
It was honestly so awkward
Tf kind of question is that
It was an interesting one for the topic but like his reaction to my responseā¦. Like bro Iām 17 what do u want from meš
Fr man
Yea wth, at least you completed the interview, and that is good!
What would be the ideal response to that out of curiosity?
Bro I told my stanford interviewer I was in a production of Hamlet and he said "i heard it's a great musical" š
ik he was mixing it up with hamilton but bro
Lady rolls down her car window at 181st street
"congrats on HAMLET!"
Me: "I WISH I wrote Hamlet!"
Lady: "Yay HAMLET!"
drives away
#myday

stop
LMFAO
WAHT
š
IM SO SCARED NOW
OMG
To the question? I replied that I would wish that all people believe that it happened, and then worked off how not-believing it is a root of a lack of openness to education, etc
Ain't a big deal fr
you got an interview???
i still havent gotten one yet
Theyāre still rolling out so donāt worry :)

If I donāt get in Stanford imma just go to (UConn) Stamford
If I say it quickly no one will know. And I can just wear Stanford merch
Just had my interview š
nice
went poorly :D
big brains
I got mine tmrw
Why what happened
He was like "so what are you looking for in your college exp" and I said "stanford's study abroad and stanford in washington programs"
then he said "what in particular about stanford interests you beyond those things"
and i had no clue how to respond š i was like "well community not quite, and not the intellectual stuff either, but rather blah blah blah"
something super random
he was super nice for the most part but he did catch me off guard with "tell me five words that describe you" and I said "inquisitive, ambitious, growth-mindset, curious" and something else... and it took me like a whole minute to say something
five words that describe you was a previous stanford supp
yeahhhhh
i didn't even say "quirky" or "humorous" even though I have a ton of dad jokes to share
literally ask me for a joke and i got one somewhere
I hate these questions bro
the words to describe are so annoying
Itās okay Iām sure the interviewer thought you did great
yeahhhhh
he like sighed sometimes lol
š
and then other times he smiled
but you could tell when he didn't like my response
Fr bc I donāt even know about myself š
Oh no ššš
I could tell he was genuinely impressed with some of my answers and somewhat bored at other times
And he left 15 minutes for questions abt stanford at the end thank goodness i prepared a half dozen questions š
What else did he ask
^yeah
I remember reading somewhere like 2 years ago that an admitted bio major answered this question by "careful collection of compassionate cells" which I thought was a great answer lol
YeAHH thatās a great answer
- What extracurriculars did you enjoy doing most? (he said ceramics)
- Is there anything you wish you could have done more during your experience? (he spent like a whole five minutes answering this one)
- did you do research or study abroad? what was it like doing it at stanford (we talked more about his son for this and he LOVED that I wanted to travel to Spain -> so i asked more specific qs here)
- What is your top recommendation for a balanced stanford life, especially in your first-year
I like that
I need to figure out a physics version of that
THANK YOUUUU
bro I donāt even have an interview at any college why do I act like I need to think about this LMFAO
I haven't had any interviews yet and was getting worried and thankfully princeton clutched up and sent me an email 2 days ago š
Who do you see yourself becoming in 5-6 years?
What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
What is the biggest thing you've learned about yourself from the past four years?
What class do you feel you've grown the most and why? Was there a teacher that was inspirational or empowering?
How have you changed in the past four years?
What do you want most from your college experience?
What about Stanford, and not any other school, in particular are you excited for the most?
What are your interested majors?
And then he asked how many schools I applied to, and I said "a few, not many" (even though I am applying to 17 lol) and he said "oh good thank goodness you're not like many others who apply to 10-12" and i was like "hehehe
"
LMFAO
Same lol

yeah I said "oh, a few in-state like the University of Washington, and a couple sparse ones in the east coast like columbia and upenn"
little did he know i meant "a few" as more than 15 š
he was like "good job applying to only 7 schools or so" and i was like, "thanks erm"
š
"just some random schools in the east, I think their names are like harvard yale and prince-something"
š
Ngl interviewers who think 10-12 are a lot are so stuck in the past
v v true because now it's just so so competitive
āOh just a little school near Boston ykā
I wouldāve been like āoh I only applied to state schools and Stanford bc itās my dreamā or something like that
Acting like Stanford is the only elite school I applied to
Well he like inserted that question in right before we left the call
He was like "oh btw before i forget"
Oh it was on zoom?
It was on FaceTime
LMFAO
yeah cause he didn't have zoom and my device doesn't support microsoft teams
LOL I spent so much time perfecting the lighting JUST to realize my device doesn't support microsoft teams š
easily 20 minutes playing around with like 3 different lights adjusting them to perfectly shine on my face
"I applied to 30 colleges. 20 of them are taken straight from the first 20 in the USNWR Rankings. I wrote all the supplementals for your alma mater the day of the deadline, and am only applying so I can tell other people I go here and so my instagram profile looks blingy."
š
yeah the first part of my interview was great then it just... tanked as he got microspecific with stanford qs
plus there's no chance imma get in anyways, there's literally always 20 students who apply from our school every year
Fuck stanford my interview was ass
Bro if I got asked about my major I think Iād die
Lol Fr
Whatās your major
Like I love physics and all but if the mf knows more than me he will see I donāt really know that much
They didnāt have business major so I chose like..the weirdest major
But maybe thatāll help me š
Idk why I applied for physics at every schooo
bro i was talking about data science so so much, then he was like "what's ur interested major" and i was like "sociology or econ" and he was like "why not statistics bruh" and i was like 𤔠"WELL SIR i wanna get a master's in statistics (totally no lol) and before i do that i wanna understand humans better" (which in context actually sounds really good) and he was like "oh that makes so much sense wow"
Ohh physics is nice
Was not very popular
LMAO
I wish they had business major
I thought they did??
Which did u choose
Nah they donāt
well i said maybe one of those and he was like "v v interesting"
Same if I get in Iām switching to cs so fast bruh
he would always be like "oh that's a great answer" or just be like "erm well"
š
And he'd say that to my face
š
LOL
so thankfully i knew how i was doing at any given moment
what major did u pick on common app @dim wagon
he'd literally say "wow that's a great answer" or be like "um okay well uh just curious... [insert next question]"
stanford watching their cs major population peculiarly triple in size immediately after the beginning of freshman year classes
i said econ and "xx in society"
forgot the xx part
LMFAO
Valid. I think Iād keep my major tho it looks interesting enough
bro my interviewer literally said "thank goodness you don't want to be a cs nerd"
That was what I put
yesssss
I did not know you could apply as random majors and switch easily
I didnāt want to get fucked and be stuck as a classics major so
Right I watched a yt vid of this girl who applied for Asian studies and switched to cs
I donāt think Stanford cares about major
Yeah thatās what I heard
I think it's just how it flows w the rest of your app
Not much but itās still considered for interest
tells a story
they do in the final selection ***
don't want 70% of kids being cs
Well, of course
I think all of my schools are like āwhy is this mf talking about changing legislature up in her app if sheās a physics majorā
All colleges do that tho
š
I would be a great polisci applicant ngl
Applies as an ETHICS major
Immediately switches to CS upon entering when admitted
š š š
but I donāt want to do polisci
my interviewer literally like "why are you interested in econ if you literally have 0 previous experiences having to do with it"
My major is science tech and society I might double major in it since I genuinely like it.
Nah fr
Thatās not good
If I get in ofc
Ok I have 0 physics experience other than taking app1
i answered well cause he was like "oh that makes so much sense" after i responded
Arenāt Stanford interviewers actually trained
I still want to major in it
so š
Bruh I didnāt realize this mant applied as ethics in society majors š scaring me
yeah thankfully mine was older though
he's like 62
I wanted to major in astrophysics for a while
Everyone has the same plan as you
I do not like astrophysics
Well I donāt plan on changing my major lolllll
Why itās so interesting
Iām actually interested in it
I heard interviews are for verifying ECs and interest cuz u canāt really lie in a conversion
Bruh mine didnāt even ask ab my ECs
interesting, well thankfully i said everything truthfully āØ
But I do think it is a little funny that when ppl discover like super far planets and stars and shit they probably donāt exist anymore bc theyāre millions to billions of light years away so you donāt see its current state
He was seven minutes late and asked about my family and why I moved and then what I would do with a million dollars and then asked me why Stanford
bruh mine asked about my ECs for literally 3/4 the time
I had a really good personal connection with my guy
Imagine discovering a star and that shit actually doesnāt exist youāre just looking millions of years into the past
Lucky. I did take the opportunity to get it all in at the end bc he asked āis there anything you wished I had askedā
mine too i mentioned how i wanted to study abroad at spain and my interviewer just went off about his incredible trip and he was like "if anything, go to spain as soon as you can"
And I was like āyeah⦠I wish u asked about my extracurricularsā¦ā
I would buy a Bugatti /j
yeah that's why i always mention extracurriculars in the "tell me about yourself" so that becomes the starting point of the convo
I LITERALLY DID THAT
HE STILL DIDNT CONTINUE
š
seriously spain is awesome. I've been there as well
so annoying
He was an awful interviewer
We didnāt even click in any sense he was a literal bio major
never been there š it's on my bucket list
I want an interview Iām so good with interviewers
how old was he
if only I got one
like ong I match their personality and they think I am them
doesnāt work well if they hate themselves though
i just try to treat the interviewer like a friend that i want to share my entire life story with *(condensed)
I just kiss them
me when the AO compliments my feet and asks how I take care of them!
(A2C edition)
do yall remember that post
š
Yes lmfao
Like 50
ope
yeah i feel like the 40-50 year olds don't really care
then the 60 year olds are sweethearts
I asked him what clubs he did he goes
and everyone younger than 40 is just v over the top
āNothing.ā
ahhh...
i'd be like 'OH MY GOSH WHAT RESEARCH DID YOU DO'
try and hype him up a lili bit
seem "genuinely curious"
even though you don't care
that's soo cool i'm so excited to do research too omg omg omg omg
start doing cartwheels on the cam
that reminds me of a prof I met at pton, he was so sweet and told me what the best places where go to was if I was touring campus, and he said he lives in the lab lol
he was like a grandpa lol
what da hell š
*not really lol
bruh howād yāall have such thorough interviews lmao
my inyerviewer was so chill
asked all basic qs
and just wanted to know more about me actually
no stanford interview yet and im in the bay ! im fucked right
or autoadmit
is no interview a bad sign tho š
good luck!
gl!
good luck! š
gl!
Went very well
Yay! Awesome job :)
Hello yall, for the Stanford self-guided tours on the weekends, what are the available times we can go? We can go anytime right?
Yeah you could essentially go at any time, but it might be helpful to try and find someone that you know or someone else who goes there that can take you to the coolest places. I had a Stanford senior last year who is a family friend who spent 2 hours walking with our entire family through campus, it was really nice.
Went everywhere including using the underground tunnels.
Ahh so 3pm-5pm should work? I am going with someone else who is also a senior in high school but not someone who is at Stanford
We can use the campus map and virtual 360 tour I guess if I can't find anyone who is at Stanford
Yeah you could go essentially any time
Ye!
do you know if they give free merch? š
i wish, they didnt even give me a bag š
damn i didn't even know there were underground tunnels
such a beautiful campus tho, can't get over how nice it looks
There are many lol
The Allen building was by far the coolest
i did end up going to checkout the first server that was created for google
that was pretty cool
after the tour finished i was like i might as well I came all the way here
š So you had to purchase the merch at Bookstore then
Who said i purchased merch š
Im not about to drop $$ on sweatshirts unless i got in, never understood why ppl be buying so many different college shirts
Me personally id not wear them if i got rejected
š
did my interview today
almost wish more colleges sent me interview requests now it was so great
lmfao my interviewer straight up said
that the interview won't have any bearing on my admission
i don't believe him fully ofc but yea it's extremely minor for stanford
XD
It just depends
Interview can be important, but for most people it doesn't contribute anything
Tbf a good interview doesnt have much of a bearing on the admissions
but if the interview goes terribly it would have a decent effect
for these schools a very good interview can bring your application up from the borderline
Just had my in-person interview! I think it went rly well
He was planning on a 45 min convo but we ended up nerding out about mechanical/aerospace engineering, mechatronics plus material science, and martial arts plus club sports for a good hour and 35 minutes š„“
He asked me some rly hard upper level engineering questions but it all went pretty well
That sounds very positive
Bro what
He asked me how ice detection works on planes
Ye me too. I got deferred rea so hoping rd pulls through
Plus the design and functional differences between the three main engine distinctions in Mach
Like scram, hypersonic, etc.
We talked a lot about vortex shedding
Robotics
Making iron man suits š„“
Etc.
Best of luck!
You as well! I have a feeling weāre both getting in šŖš
lowkey scared as a uk applicant that i haven't had an interview req yet
i'm only an hour away from london š
consoling myself with the classic "it's okay they're all busy doing tech stuff in california"
hopefully we get ones soon
though equally ik some peeps got in last year without interviews? which sounded wild
Getting in without interviews is very common
My one was virtual btw so I donāt think itās on location but then the guy who interviewed me had a kid who went to my literal next door neighbour school
oh pls lord let it beeeeeee
Oh fairs, I wonder if they live in the UK then! Is your school boarding?
Noo Iām at a day in london so yeah he was defo living in london but I think he was actually Italian? He didnāt sound british at all
same
dw its not like british schools in terms of interviews
Any intls got interviews?
yes some internationals did get interviews
yes
but it's completely availability based fr
so dont stress it
kewll
Yeah i think stanford its completely random for intls
i recently got an email asking for an interview
for those of you here who have had an interview, do you have any tips? (this would be my first ever interview)
also, what kind of questions are generally asked?
Itās completely random for everyone
Be ready to talk abt ecs, major, what makes u unique, have specific things u want to talk abt
Have a why Stanford answer ready
alright, thanks
i'll make sure to have those ready
Also have some questions ready for them
And be ready to explain ur answers in depth
Np
Best of luck!
thank you :)
anyone else from new england still not get an interview? š
Mine only asked like 2 questions, why Stanford and how online schooling differs from physical
it seemed mostly like informational (she told me to ask her whatever questions I had within 10 minutes of interview beginning and she talked a lot about stanford and what it offers etc,)
but I think the interviewer is pretty free to do whatever they want
Ah I see, thatās interesting
yeah idk I think they have a large amount of leeway though
so be prepared
I posted how my interview went over here if that helps :)
Definitely
how do u know
Im just like that tbh
wish i felt like that š
Lmao im just trolling ik im not getting in
Alr, thanks for the info, Iāll keep that in mind going in
Cool thanks :)
Has stanny sent likelies?
I would sell my soul for a stanny likely ong
Did u get into UT
capped LMFAOOO
I have been taking Ls this EA season fr
only 2 ppl out of my nearly 700 person class got in for non auto
and it was for COLA
Thatās usually how it is lmfao
Ik some people who got capped from UT and got into HYPSM later
Like if ur not top 6% or really damn close u can p much kiss goodbye to UT unless itās COLA or some really rare case in STEM
yeah same
Could you tell me whatās the name of that Reddit page?
ApplyingToCollege
i can send u the link
35 votes and 10 comments so far on Reddit
is stanford still sending interview requests or are they done with those?
My interviewer said Feb 27 is deadline for Stanford interviews to be completed
Thank you
Still haven't received one lol
same
same
same but i think its because i opted for no interview lol
yeah if u opted for no interview you wont get one
yeahhh
i just got one 2 days go for New England
Are stanford interviews out for international? Esp South east asia
mid feb is 14th. could stanny be my valentine?
Yes
my interview was last thurs but then my person asked to reschedule last minute and they never got back to me šµāš«
Rescheduled to after decision day š
LMAO š
Good evening stanford
hi stanford
whats good stanford
good night stanford
Good afternoon stanford
international moment
Friendly reminder that you are required to submit your MidYear Transcript by February 15! Official transcripts must be sent by a school official, preferably through CommonApp. It can also be submitted by school personnel to [email protected].
@shut trench how do i know that my mid year transcript was sent
it doesnt say anything about it in the portal
oh yeah same
Common app
Thank you
Honestly itās annoying that Mid year doesnāt show on checklist
most trifling thing probably but how much would stanford care if i used a similar phrase in two of my short responses
'societal and legislative frameworks' in one, 'legislative and societal response' in another
i'm just bored and nitpicking because i haven't gotten an interview š
it took like ten rereads of my essays checking if there was anything especially weird/off-putting/wrong bc i was stressing to find that and i'm lowkey just hoping they don't š
The Stanford community is deeply curious and driven to learn in and out of the classroom. Reflect on an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning. (250 words)
for this did you guys talk about an idea/experience of your own or one in the subject in general kinda
i made my own unique idea in the subject
it shouldn't be just a general description about the subject afaik
ah okay perfect
Personal experience
I did this too I think
:(( I reread one of my essays and was just like ahh I shouldāve reworded that one sentence
oops- i guess either way it won't make or break us it's just mildly annoying to ourselves
the AOs themselves probably won't care/notice
personal experience in a way
I talked about a very unique part of learning I love
now I think I did the prompt wrong
I just wrote about a topic/idea that interested me.. š
don't worry about it .. everyone's different perspective ig
That's what your supposed to write about fr
That's what I did, and how I pursued it
mm ig but idk if I made it super personal but wtv
As long as itās academic
if itās okay to share, what did you write about? in general terms if you donāt want to be too specific
I listed cs for my intended major so I talked about what drew me in etc
I did the what is smt meaningful question as a why major kind of
My commonapp is very academic though so I hope that doesnāt hurt me
My personal statement is not academic at all lol
Thatās what it should be
I mean hopefully u shows intellectual vitality in that essay cuz rating depends on that
I have no idea what that is ā¤ļø
intellectual vitality =
your passion to
Learn ?
Yea
interview was only 23 minutes... ??
Damn
šš
Yeah I mean thatās what everyone says to do
to not make it academic
But I didnāt really know what else to write
š yeah?
Why would they have a prompt for it if they didnāt approve of it though
Then write about something outside of school
I mean itās outside of school but still academic
My common app essay is about pens.
Lmao
Your whole application is academic
Test scores, grades, even activities
U need to show character
If everything is academic
Why does writing about something academic mean it canāt show character š
They are going to think ur not going to contribute imo
@ornate bone how many interviews have u gotten
How many applied?
uhh
idk how many schools I applied to have interviews
i think only Stanford and 4 ivies (yale Cornell Columbia Princeton)
āDue to limited alumni availability in your particular area, you are invited to interview virtually with a current Yale senior.ā
they say limited availability in the email
Why would they have an academic prompt as an option then
Theyāre not gonna set ppl up for failure
Or!!! Maybe itās because theyāre fine with an academic prompt!
shocking
Ok
Lol
Iād rather use the personal essay to show something important about my character
sleep until April 1st fr
Real
why do you think an academic essay canāt show character
Im on an airplane so I canāt sleep actually š¢
Academic prompts are obv fine
or rather itās just much harder
Academic prompts are fine it just depends on how itās written
Well thatās everything
Any subject can be well executed
Doesnāt matter what it is
The writing matter
Matters
what if I wriote a prompt about how I like bullying people and throwing rocks at children
but it was really well written
Itās not academic š
Be frā
š
Turn airplane mode on and delete discord
Watch the Super Bowl
I am
think about how much technological jargon they read every day
sometimes about a good story is what they need
id also caution against too much technological jargon because you cant promise that they will understand what ur saying
My personal statement was read by MIT alums and several faculty at my school, and it was later published on our school's CCRC for future students. I talked about something that a lot of kids deal with, and how I dealt with it myself. They all said it was a very strong and provocative essay (provocative as in, several cried when they read it).
That said, your personal statement doesn't have to be super unique or anything. Just make it "you" (which is so cliche but true).
U have not addressed why you think academic canāt be personal/demonstrate characteristics
Forget it
Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
Where do u go
That is a literal prompt lmfao
š okay
I donāt think op meant it in that sense I think they meant it in the sense where some students use the prompt to talk about classes theyāve taken or something cliche like a time they got a bad grade or underperformed in a class or had trouble with something academic related
Those kinds of essays can be very generic and mundane
Does that not apply to everything
Sports injuries arenāt academic but are āclicheā
Ya thatās why sports injuries are awful essays lol
I've not been accepted anywhere, but my College Counselor (who, to give credit to, has done his job for 30 years and has helped kids get into every T20 school, with 5+ going to Ivies a year) said that what I'd written was one of the best he's seen in the past few years...
And given that I'd only written the statement in 5 hours (because I was just writing it like I was writing to a friend -- simple language and story), I was pretty surprised.
Decisions come next month, since I'm still a senior.
slay William!!!
Thank you :))
To be honest, I spent like 20+ hours just sitting at my computer staring at a white Google Docs...
Then the epiphany happened, I wrote, and I shared it with several people.
I am not worrying too hard about decisions , Umich tuition is a bit pricey but I will just pray on ucs
What major did you apply for
Yeah I didn't apply to UMich cause they're over priced.
Yeah and Iām oos :((
I applied to Economics, Ethics in Society, Sociology...
Same here.
Wow
I think anything ethics related is really cool
Or rather like
Hard to wrap my head around
same with Econ⦠itās hard to think about how others think
Damn shoutouts all humanities majors
I applied to different ones depending on the school:
Economics
Sociology
Information Systems/Business
Data Analytics
Systems Engineering
Ong I could never
I just did cs everywhere
Yeah, I applied to Econ to a lot of schools and that is actually my intended major. I don't want to just apply to some random major to try and switch internally.
I applied to UPenn Wharton for instance, the most competitive school at UPenn :(( but if I do get in, that means that I actually made it and didn't just try to transfer from some misc major like other kids.
oh thatās so valid
@ornate bone I, personally, believe that an āacademicā essay canāt have the impact as a true personal statement
Lol
Though I havenāt heard of anyone actually doing a major switch like that
That is word
I haven't either, because I hear it's nearly impossible to transfer.
I personally believe that you arenāt addressing my argument at all and are repeating the same thing over and over
š
None of us have an argument
Why do you think an academic essay can the personal dawg
Nah my argument is that u can have both
Ur argument is āno it canātā š
None of us can substantiate our āargumentsā
I can???
because commonapp offers an academic prompt
but uh if u think that they set up that prompt so that people who pick it are at a disadvantage
then idk what to tell you
like every topic
U also csnt just say one essay is inherently better than another bc if itās academic or not
They can both be personal
And reveal characteristics
My friendly opinion is that whatever you write about (academic or not), it should demonstrate something about your character or personality that an AO otherwise wouldn't be able to find from other parts of your application.
Itās just my intuition
I think it may be harder writing about something academic simply because that's demonstrating you as a student, not you as a person.
by academicā¦Iām talking about anything thatās like
But that's just my two cents.
Subject related
Anyone can take it their own way.
not just school
Yeah
Though a more niche application
Machine learning to solve x problem in ur life?
no ?
Ok
My essay was titled "Becoming Extroverted" and my essay was how:
I frankly can't become extroverted, but I can become confident.
So I embrace who I am -- everything I am. And I smile.
though I donāt see the problem in thatā¦
I saw an essay like that
I changed my account so I might have shared it earlier.
I was previously "doggo"
i wrote ab barbies š
Yeah cause I do think for academics, you need to reserve space to talk about the subject at hand, when 100% of it should be about you.
If everything on ur application is academic, Iām gonna assume ur a robot
Dw for the meaningful short-answer for Stanford, I wrote about planting a hydrangea š
In fact, half of my short answers had something to do with plants.
okay?
my stanford essays were not quirky at all
I am not a robot but think what u want ig
Mine weren't quirky either, but I wanted my voice to shine through. So I just answered questions like I was talking to a friend.
I wrote about peanut m&ms
like super straightforward which in hindsight was a poor decision bc everyone that gets in writes such weird essays i feel like
Can I read it š
i wrote ab storytelling for the meaningful prompt
Oh. I didn't even answer the Meaningful prompt explicitly.
I did not either
I believe you
but my opening and ending
But what matters is what u present
Tie back to peanut m&ms
And I don't recommend doing so.
NAHHH BC SAME
ayy yo i saw that exact same essay before
I recently changed accounts :)
I was in Hawaii when I was doing my Stanford essays š
oh ok
As I read it again now, I don't think it's that good tbh :\
In my personal statement, I talked about my excessive ambition and arrogance and how I overcame that. I connected the journey to my passion project, Macbeth in English class, constant comparison of my achievements to others, teaching others, and a hook metaphor that I come back to at the end.
I think intellectual essay is the most important one
The view was so nice
I didnāt read it super closely but I liked it and I can tell why hydrangeas are important to you
which is all u need
Ofc I canāt interpret it in the context of ur overall app
But for what itās worth I think it was well written
There are a lot of references to other parts of my application, so you did read it out of context ;)
But thank you haha
Is that the first one
I thought essays are all equally impt
I agree
I've heard the same
Intellectual vitality is very important at stanford
Given a rating
It has its own category for aos to rate u on
?
10/10
This is exactly what I said
I am so intellectually vital š
Oh lmao i didnt realize u meant its given its own rating
IV isn't just from one prompt tho, it's throughout ur essay and interview if u had it
^
idk what sp is though
What's IV?
Intellectual vitalitiyy
Intellectual vitality
Ah
it means like
Interview is important for Stanford I gathered
Yr curiosity outside of the classroom
And SP?
Do you like learning !!
OHHH
Source?
That's cool
It's considered, as is in every other school
Itās based on availability tho right
