Yeah, I'm the HS gal. The DS program is quite good, the department head turned dean is just became the Provost (chief academic officer) at Purdue and we're getting a new DS building on campus so there's definitely going to be a ton of focus placed on the program. A lot of the curriculum is CS so you get access to many of the same amenities as the CS program combined with statistics. You will be doing more statistics than CS majors obv, the stat program is not particularly notable AFAIK but it's def not bad either. You'll have a lot of opportunities to take AI classes in CS because data science is basically setting you up for AI

Both should be doable. Maybe FYE is slightly easier because it's a lot more stats based (Ie... do well enough in calc, physics, and chem you can get into the engineering majors). But, I'd highly recommend trying to figure this out before enrolling here because you don't wanna be stuck in a program you don't like at Purdue.

Campus is pretty nice, I've lived in a couple of other college towns and I like it the most. The dorms, however, are hellish other than the Honors College. All the buildings on campus are red brick which is a nice aesthetic IMO. Some of the buildings like WALC are new and quite nice, some are renovated, but some are quite dated. West Lafayette is a very safe town overall, a friend was joking that you could walk around with a sign at midnight saying "mug me" and you'd be just fine (he's correct). The main drawback is that it's COLD ASF here in the winter

Purdue overall is about 50 in US News and CS is T20. Purdue is mostly a STEM school that has other programs so the STEM vs overall rankings are a bit skewed

I mean, it's a research univ so there's gonna be a decent amt of theory. Like, even in a class called C programming the exams are actually on theoretical memory architectures and management as opposed to coding. There are a lot of classes that are purely theory with no coding at all, some that are a mix, and some that are all applied CS. You can't avoid theory all together but there are different routes to customize exposure

Like, the software engineering track won't have a ton of theory but the Foundations of CS will be almost all theory
