If you read into it, the criteria seems to largely boil down into, “we like you and think you have potential to succeed, but somewhere along your academic path there was something nontraditional that brings up questions we need elaboration on”

Those questions don’t mean you did something wrong—it can be like “explain more about your upward trend in grades”

If you’re someone who doesn’t meet the initial UC admissions criteria (e.g. 3.0/3.4 GPA) then you’ll likely need this augmented/comprehensive review to become a part of the 6% of the admissions by exception class per the 2017 recommendation I found by BOARS

But you can meet initial criteria and still receive it (aka the other 9% of the 15%)
