i'm seeing a lot of kids with crazy profiles but weaker stats get bad results from the uc's and what i imagine happening is
the uc's get so many applications that they just quickly assign points to applicants, like x points for academics + y points for essays yadda yadda
then, like an ap test, they choose a cutoff

they also do some kind of equalizing between schools so that academic score is roughly correlated with class rank
because they accept the same % of kids from every school unlike privates
