#UIUC!!! (2022-2023)
1 messages · Page 13 of 1
varies but ppl do their best
It's manageable ur first sem for sure
well
lol
oh that’s good
not for dinign
to be fair im at work rn and im on discord and applying to jobs XD
lmao
i get disrtracted
Stonks
well I appreciate u trying to help me at least lol
if it’s a distraction I should probably go lol
lol okay
Grainger career fair
lemme check company list again
I don't think I'm gonna go
r career fairs good at all
uhh
I heard mixed opinions
Hmm they can be for networking
it is mixed
I got my internship by external terms
Usually I use it for training
Learning to talk to people
Ah
Professionally
the grainger career fair is agTech and industrial focused imo
but i missed the reflections projections conference in fall and thats more big tech
LOL
:(
how so
So crowded
i think im out of the loop on some career events, missing an email list or two
oh def
Oh damn yea
either that or i abuse a google cloud API
lmao
ooo
its actually very uncrowded
last time I went
I was like the only one out of 15 people
that went
but I went hella early
prob not enough coverage either
there was a united airlines event that was just a table in some building
I know all stats and statscs major got an emial about this
LOL
but they sounded cool, i forget if i applied:(
Whenever I get some company event I just check if they have food
imma avoid that stand
LOL
C3 AI???
LOL ikr
wtf they doing here
yeah
lmao they rejected me too so no point in talking to them today
ugh fine ill come
holy c3 ai
just apply again
sorry @manager
or 6 months
united is here!
more companies for CS than i thought, not bad
prefrosh co26 lmao
despise
lol
bs life
government jobs seem scary to me
ehh prob a poor impression
but i have no clue waht to expect
all the ppl i know in gov are like "i litearly cannot tell u"
fair
@tired robin someone from uiuc adviced me to do cs 124 and told it is fun? and strictly said no to 128 as it apparently traumatising? do you agree
for context, i am not cs god in anywyas. i was just good at maths and probabaly that helped me get in
opinions vary, here's what i've gathered:
- starting with 124 is the standard, though a fair amount of people proficiency out and start with 128+173 (which you'd normally take the spring after 124)
- 124 is gentler than 128, focusing on OOP while being the 1st CS course you'd usually take. 128 is, uh, much more tedious generally with C++ and memory management
- if you can prof 124, up to you whether to skip to 128+173. it does advance you quite a bit but not make-or-break: plenty of students just start with 124 as a more chill fall semester
kind of–formally, i believe you arent allowed to interact with course staff or do the coursework, i.e. you just sit in for lecture
but informally, you can just show up and do whatever, which is what im doing
ic
you might be able to pass/fail for classes outside your major reqs
i was thinking of doing that for an ece course but just took it normally anyways
got a B+ in it hehe
anyone know when fin aid packages come out?
google, im guessing april
Does UIUC accept a letter of continued interest
does UIUC want updated midyear grades?
ig not since it says "Do not include senior year grades or senior year GPA adjustments if these courses were in-progress when you submitted your application. This information will not be utilized in review."
right
no
there's appeal but that's about it
So don’t send the typical email letter thing. I know a lot of schools like that but uiuc seems like they don’t want anything extra like no mid year grades or anything
lets go
i’m so confused, i got this email but i’m doing cs + x😭
What’s the difference between the waitlist if you’re given second choice but not admitted to first choice VS being directly offered a waitlist? When would we know / hear back? If we appeal by adding a valid extenuating circumstance for explaining calculus grades, can the appeal work?
If anyone can answer lmk
same here, it's surprising, is CS+X considered part of Grainger Engineering?
i think if you're given 2nd choice, you're "waitlisted" for first choice; so essentially you can still attend the school but with the 2nd major unless they approve of the first
i thought we were part of las only
compared to direct waitlist, where you're not admitted to either major but on the waitlist; so you can't attend even if you wanted to
its probably bcs cs is a part of it but x isnt
that makes sense, i got an email from both grainger and las
cool
@tender matrix explaination?
where i dont see it
nvm i see it it's sent in email. i thought it was in the portal
“Unless they approve of the first” uh wdym?
take this with a grain of salt cuz i'm only a senior but
they clearly said that "applicants admitted to an alternate program are technically considered waitlisted for their first choice. If space opens later, we will notify you via email"
so this is saying (i think) that there is a chance they could offer you your first choice
so instead of your 2nd choice you would go to uiuc with your first choice
Here’s my dilemma
I omitted a grade explanation
Which I c an go over in my appeal
Do I send the appeal
I’m so fucking confused akskflhppwkqndjd
give them a call tomorro
im not 100% if this is true but I think if you were offered admissions to 2nd major and you try to appeal for ur first, u are essentially withdrawing ur offer. if u get denied for ur first, u will not be able to go to ur first and ur second major.
just call and explain and ask what you can do
How else do I make a correction on my app tho dawg
For extenuating / grade explanations
Appeal can be used to include this omitted info everything else they ignore
I’m stuck
Here
i think waiting till tomorrow is the best choice
like i said i am not sure if what i wrote is true
i remember reading it somewhere in their blog
what is coming from them directly
oooooooooooooo
You just get put on WL for ur first major
If they have extra seats you'll have a chance of getting it
its cuz we our degree is a bridge between grainger and whatever college the X is in
AYYYY CS + EDUCATION!!!
Your the first one I met
Congrats on getting into the program
I think there were only 12 seats
thanks a lot!!!
So it was def competitive
wait really?
what
Yep
12 seats for CS education
then is it lower rate than reg cs
ik someone in my school who also got in
i think u have to also factor that not as many applied to it as compared to regular cs tho
but still
damn
i feel special now lol
so theres 10 left unknown lol
wait
i guess so
yeah idrk, i think they'll expand the program in the future
12 spots?
Sorry I'm wrong
huh?
i think every cs + x program starts small
WTF
wtf
LOL
lmao
They expect 10 students
bro whatttttt lmfaooo
wait ok hold on
So they probably admitted very low numbers of people
that doesnt mean 10 admitted
Yea it doesnt
so they admit 20?
But it means 10 seats
that means they expect 10 to enroll
for yield rate
yeah i dont think a lot of people applied tbh
So still very low
in reality they could have admit like 200
yield rate is probably higher for cs
Still a competitive feet
No
CS + education they would not admit 200
I think 20 to 30 makes sense
but wouldn't that affect yield
but they only expect 10 out of the amount that got in to accept
i feel if u get in uiuc cs you're pretty likely to commit tho yk what i mean except if u get like mit cmu
thanks a lot!
The first class of the new program
rlly hyped to be on campus next year
Will be very exciting to see what you guys will do with the intersection of the two fields
I hope you'll like it a lot!
I was actually very interested in CS education
But that program didn't exist when I applied
ya it was new this year
what is ling in ur name bjz
they told us when i visited this year
and does the 23% grainger rate have cs rate added into it
Apparently they also have cs + physics and cs + bioengineering next year new too
I think pure cs yeah
Not sure cs + x
Think it does
Yea I'm hyped for those
I love to see the intersections
Yea instate tuition too
wow those programs sound like they’ll be tough
Yep they will be housed in Grainger too
it’s cool that they’re making more cs + x programs
fr, couldn’t imagine doing cs + bioeng 😭😭
ikr
woah thats cool
Yep
Ultimate flex fr
Also seems like not many applied DS + X
I think thats still possible but bio eng would be a minor
Thats a thing?
Yep also new
Damn
But tbh I don't rly recommend it
why not just add more seats to cs?
Why not
It's a little too non-technical for me
my friend did DS + X
hmm
he loves it
They only take calc 1 for a major heavy in stats
he also gets so many internships
how to which part
So he's a freshmen getting a bunch of interships?
would u guys recommend PCH btw? Me and my friends were thinking about it
Yea but like IS + DS needs a bit of reworking imo
They take a watered down version of our data strurcts course
And all
It depends on ur goals
That makes way more sense
So he's not a freshmen?
he is
How did he transfer then?
he did one sem at penn state aand is nw here
Oh so he just transferred in
yeah
Well it's hard to say the uiuc name is helping him here
We'll have to see after a few years
But it truly does need some stronger coursework
To be competitive against something like CS + stats
its weird that uiuc doesnt have like a full fledged ds program
Ig cs + x programs compensate for spots tho
LOL yea
They were considering CS + stats
And converting it to ds
But the prof
Said it's way too technical in cs
cs + x majors get access to engineering career fairs right
Yep
if i plan to visit, is it best to fly to chicago or to uc directly
Hope we meet on campus next year
Ohare
Def ohare
Np np any of u all ok to dm me questions Abt uiuc
Hope so too! If you take 124h I might ur pm
then bus or train to uc
Fly to Chicago
isnt there a flight to champaign?
private jet
Bus
W
It goes directly from O'Hare to campus
With that few students, do you think that the students are almost hand-picked by faculty in conjunction with the admissions staff?
Peoria charter
This I'm not sure
be my pilot
The admissions is a black box
Yea, but it's an interesting thought that if they have so few students they can essentially choose who they want and why
about how many times(holidays) do OOS students usually leave Champaign to go home?
My sister lives far away from home and comes back for all the major ones
my friend who lives in cali used to come back every two weeks cuz he needed indian sustenance to survive
That is true
Wtf he must be rich
Once during Thanksgiving
waste of time
bro Chicago got plenty of indian stuff
I'm not going home for a year and a half
Na his dad put a stop to it and told him to man up after like a semester lmfao
Gonna miss my family
christmas?
Dang frr??
Yea that too
oh wait is ur family international
Yea I'm intl
And I got an internship
I see
he is from shang hai
ahh i was like oh shit thats wack
Dang icic
Any places to visit when touring uiuc?
i took ap chinese
Uhhh
so i can read
Go visit algeld
Might be visiting next month
the cornfields
Yoo that's gonna be a cool trick to show the intl students here
Wait are u Chinese American?
when do they give admitted student tours?
yea
I’ll have 4 years for that 😭
April prolly
i got a 5 on the ap test im so good
Cool cool
perfect, spring break
Oh also how hard are the physics reqs?
how many intl students would u say there are
There is some Chinese stuff around here, lots of Chinese intls
Pretty bad
Try to do them somewhere else if you can
wait ur english seems decent
Do you know how good the Chinese department is?
Couple thousand
how about the indian culture at uiuc?
Ok so I'm an outlier
I was born in the states
Ik first hand theres a lot
But grew up in Shanghai
Very big
but thats doesn't mean anything
You'll love it if you love Indian culture
u spent most of time in china
The diwali stuff
hell yeah
Hmm I moved there when I was 9
So I did do some education in the states
Whatd u get in for?
stats
nope
lol got into uiuc
dont need to
ok so if you visit
the places you should go are
but if ur family lives in china, does it no cost a fortune
Altgeld, Grainger Library, Illini Union, some of the dorms, Siebel Center of CS, Siebel center of design
cuz like 1 us dollar is maybe 7 usd or smth
i c
Bro uiuc expensive af
nah
ay man its worth it
why did u not apply to those chinese unis tho
its expensive but not as bad as private schools
if i may ask
I need to gaokao
Purdue OOS for me costs as much uiuc instate lmfaooo
I just didnt wanna do gaokao
yeah that shit is hard from what i heard
my parents wanted me to come back for college anyway
tbh tho
purdue bills by credit hr
so it more expensie than it seems
purdue oos is one of the cheapest tuitions
Oh fr?
lmfao
yea lmaoo
i swear thats their slogan
Bro i actually lucked out, only other target i got into was UMD CS, wasn’t even expecting it cuz my gpa was doodoo so i didnt file the fafsa for literally only umd
My fafsa efc high anyways tho
thats cracked still
umd cs
Uiuc is a reach for all cs
Especially since educ is so small
specifically
Still a reach imo
It's still got a competitive edge imo
i think it was a high target/low reach for me
cuz most people got in ee at my school
are you from chicago?
Dude i got deferred at uw, waitlisted umass, rejected notre dame and purdue lmfao
tbh nd was never happening realistically
LOL I got rejected from all my RDs
It's nothing tbh
You got in, then you got in
Having some pride is good sometimes
Ya
what were they
northwestern or northeastern?
nu as in neu or nwu
Western
yeah those are all reaches
W school, expensive AF tho
nyu idk
Oh cmu
their engineering kinda meh
Also got waitlisted at gatech and umich and ucsd
ayyy i got rejected here too
what
their logo is just their name in special font
CMU
what
Search the cmu logo
im so confused
Ahh lolll
The Carnegie Mellon University Seal, the Seal, is the most formal academic brand expression of the university.
na dude its literally their seal lmaooo
Ong

wait what is uiuc's mascot
We technically don't have one
bruh
But we are called the fighting illini
that's lame
Wtf
Most people are edging towards the kingfisher
how long ago they remove it
so y'all had no mascot for 8 years
Personally i like the I ngl
purdue's logo is ugly
Screw purdue
no like the big p
yuck
I got rejected by purdue
same
LOL
so for me purduerejects.com goes to uiuc website but uiuc a superior school anyways
uiuc >>>>> purdue
yessir
They p good at bball tho
Everyone at uiuc hates purdue
purduerejects.com goes to indiana for me
Yea it shud go to IU
im saying for me personally it should go to uiuc
cuz i got rejected by them and got in uiuc
lmfao
purdue was harder than uiuc this year
Doubt tbh
brown's logo is the best
I think uiuc was higher this year tho because i think people overenrolled and a lot of people took a gap year two years ago
that's still kinda high
naviance says their rate is 65%
is that this year
gotcha
65% is old
also how typical is it for someone to get in cs + x rd after getting deferred, one of my rlly good friends got deferred
and hes like super bummed
Ye
defers dont get rejected?
Yea that's old numbers
idk if its accurate
It gets lower every year
does the uni report ea acceptances to schools
Idk
Are u OOS?
Should I write a letter of continued interest if I was deferred
No they tell u not to
Damn
Does anyone know the deferral acceptance rate for cs+stats (or just cs in general)
Not sure, but ik a ton of my friends who were stacked this year were denied stats + cs
Like one of em got into umich, unc, got rejected cs + stats instate. If u got deferred u might have a decent chance
yes
it will probably rise a lot during rd round
it wont go from 87 to 8
and i doubt all ea acceptances have been updated
yup naviance is self report
if you go to colleges i’m applying to
on your list of colleges at the far right you should be able to edit ur decision
oh i c thanks
i updated
now its 9
yeah im debating that
lets see if im admitted first lol
its a reach
24% rate last year
Have any deferred people called admissions to ask why
r u cali too
major?
would u take uci
over uiuc
idk ranking isnt everything
i would pick ucsd or uci fs
no
uci is more famous at least
is ucd > uci in cs and engi
ive never heard od ucd
uc davis
wtf is ucsc
oh wait im dumb
nvm
u forgot ucsd
i think ucd is too low
it at least beats ucsc
where would u put usc in that list
before or after la
what is roi
@patent sundial ucsd or uiuc then
where r u
east coast
we both are in cali
oh I see
i applied mathematics at cal
so if i get in
i dont think i would go
nah
still. my parents suggest me not go
me too
!chance uiuc
anyone got schols or honors program
nah
Is the Information Systems major impacted like CS?
It's in gies so it's gonna be a certain level of competitive
not to be confused with information science, though idk how far the curriculums vary
do ur (objective) research
google it but i heard not
And also the smelliest
i dont have a sense of smell so
good luck lol
cock and ball torture facility
cs 173
mashallah
ah im entering at 2
wtf
LMAOO
doesnt feel that big xd
A lot of it is underground I thought
You’re right but it half a quarter of a million books I think lol
not looking good @tender matrix
for our meeting in the dining hall thing
but yk what
im prob still touring campus
so
👀
😭
Damn thoo
It could've been great lol
But I hope you find success anywhere 🫡

Fuck northwestern

truth
Oh but LSU is fine?
Better than northwestern
that's so real
Lmaoooo my favorite poster
lmao its probably an april fools prank or something
I just found it on the reddit
my friend put up a cock and ball check up poster as a prank in middle school
Did anyone receive their acceptance package yet
yeah, just yesterday
A hard copy of the letter and stickers
And maybe some pamphlets
Ooh that sounds nice
No merch tho :/
i want my usc airpods
did they really send airpods to accepted people?
or were they fakes
why
but who knows, the internet can be scarily misleading sometimes
how many people does usc accept
who gets them
and doesnt uiuc give a bunch of merch out in events anyway
idk. the acceptance package from them is pretty typical
some shirts
orientation week is where all ur free stuff is
yeah
i came several days late in the mdidle of the week
so sad
if ur in LLC u might have events which include free stuf
which week is it?
whatever week before classes is
ok cool
when do classes start
theyll give you a whole timeline and theres 2 days which are the recommended range for fresh
last year, 8/23 iirc
we go late aug through mid dec
Would UIUC reconsider your app fr if ur grade explanation is legit for a Calc class?
Cs+X where they prefer philo
Calculus** sorry
nobody here knows
Okkkk
I got stickers.
anyone know when the uiuc letter comes out
it came out a couple days ago
oh what
go to additional info in checklist
oh shit thanks
there is a letter link there
i got mine
came with stickers
good stickers if it means anything
and a book to like write down what i’m excited for and stuff
yea thats what i got too
Are you in engineering
I am
Cool
I like your pfp lol
thanks lol
I just had an interview for UIUC
He’s a freshie
wait really?
yeah
so it became like cs damn
do you know why?
no thats jus what my mom said
oh
oh is this new?
ngl I'm pretty sure in the next few years math/cs stat/cs gonna be blocked off
I guess
as well the other cs+x
I didn’t know about this
cause I know u can switch to ece right now
Still don’t have a confirmation
but idk about the class of 27
You def can
welp
this is the first year cs has been banned
and everyone and their mom wants to switch into stat/cs and math/cs
thats gonna be banned soon along with ece imo
and then everyones gonna try to switch into cs + cropscience or smth
yeah it would make sense if all of those eventually get blocked too
So when do they send the acceptance mail packages for oos students
ah yes most reliable source
no offense to mom:D
i wouldnt exactly be but admissions would be hella clear on it if so
did your mom mention where she saw the info
do they?
what abt intls 😢
No
L school
I heard someone say they got stickers n stuff
i got that, but it was just telling me i should apply (which i obv did later)
they sent those in like November tho, not recently
id assume they give stuff for acceptances, cuz im oos
Okay cuz I git in so I want atlest a letter or something
so UIUC won't send the pack to international students......I just realized this when I visit the website 🥲
Sad as fuck 😭
:(
So oos students should get stuff
how about oos international lol
INTL students can pick up enoufh free shit the first week here lol
The package isn’t much to miss dw
if i got in for data science in the school of informational science, how hard is it to transfer to CS?
...
Impossible
theres atleast 1 person asking that per day lol
You can switch to cs + x
Does anyone know when financial aid comes out?
do you expect this to change in a year or two?
Actually
Maybe it will
But then other CS + x might be this way
The new ones especially
@static pulsar can you pin this:
You can still switch into CS + X and ECE
You CANNOT transfer into CS.
You CAN switch into CS + X and ECE.
Cool thanks!
i heard that they will soon make it so that you cannot switch into ece. is this true?
uiuc sent me lanyard stickers and some pin
there is no official information on it
doubt it will be enforced for class of '27
yay
I didnt get anything from them
Luckyyyy I want some
😢
Did u accept
ah lol im a freshman at uiuc
I just didn't get them last year
cause Im international
How common are deferrals and what would it mean about how AOs reviewed my application (deferred from cs+stats in state)
Yes
Would this “auto admit” point apply to CS+PHIL and other LAS CS+X majors excluding math and stats ?
some of them
they probably aren't like umich at least
not sure about cs+phil
doubt it would work for cs+ling
cs+adv is probably the easiest one lmao
thats why i applied to it
but cs+anSci or cropSci might be easy too if you have relevant ecs
also cs+education
was anybody here admitted and is intl or not eligible for aid
How easy is it to change my major from Math+CS ---> (Grainger) CS?
Either rn or as a UIUC student?
Just wondering 👀
u cant do that
they banned grainger cs transfers
I should've applied to that because like a third of my ECs are marketing stuff
did CS + math instead because another third is math though 😔
aaaa less than a month till rd decisions
ez dub hargun sir
Yea csling is hard
In the past it was quite easy imo 😭 especially from math and stats cause they take more CS core courses to begin with so it's easier to get through the path
??
Ahh yea probably then
Probably no loci?
Yea probably no loci
if i hear another dumb cs question im leaving
have yet to hear anyone actually ask what the school is like...isnt that more important?
nooo!
