When I hold the piece of black sea glass, I imagine the rocky waves it’s braced to get to this point. When its ancestor—a jagged glass bottle—descended to the bottom of the ocean, it was crushed to pieces by the weight of the waves. To them, sea-glass is nothing more than just a pretty artifact.
I decided to place my sea-glass collection right next to my debate awards. I look back at them whenever I need a reminder that uniqueness--of shape or voice--is beautiful. As I tumble through obstacles in the future, I will continue to throw myself into the treacherous ocean of adversity. I recognize that the prospect of struggling should never become a fear or hindrance, rather I must overcome challenges to transform myself into a stronger person.
