Right now, for new players to get into the game its a massive grind to catch up, hell; ive been playing hundreds of hours and im still way behind some of these big clans. Although im putting in more time than I have any other game.
Combat skills are the core of the game really, let people obtain it easily enough and hopefully we can keep some players, and maybe gain some too.

I dont want this to come out as a "get gud" comment. But are you aware if the fast ways to level your fighting stats?
Npc prison/gym and fox dens?
You can invest in some high level armour and wear it whilst having a food bowl nearby to keep you from dying of starvation. (Or sit on a workstation that can feed you). You can hit 900 physique and heavy armour very quickly.
You could use an auto clicker/typer to level archery whilst doing this too. But I think they may have stopped the use of that.
Also, getting the music dlc will save you a lot of time when it comes to training 1h and polearm as you can use the instruments as weak weapons. Use stone hoes for 2h training.
I hope this helps, but I also hope it's made easier for new players.

yeah man, i know all the above but really thats the shittest way to skill on any game. surely they could make it a better experience than afk'ing at a fox pen for hours on end

This was my main complaint about the game before it went to early access. It literally rewards people for cheesing the game and the devs know people do it yet choose not to fix it.
