60% of all the members in the orchestra are men

you need to find the percentage of men who play a stringed instrument out of every member and the percentage of women out of everyone who plays a stringed instrument so you can add them up and get the total percentage

we're doing 35% of 60% and so we're going to multiply them to get 21%

then we're doing the same with women, 40% * 45% = 18%

adding those two up gives you 39%
