so i expanded it out, but then when ii tried to factorise it i could only take x and y out as factors so i got x(x+2y+3)+y(y+3) but idk if that's right

dont expand

#

both terms contain a x+y so we can factor that out

#

(x+y)[(x+y) + 3]

do you just cancel it out?

why can you not leave the second x+y as just 1?

#
