This is what the socket is supposed to look like, as you can see, it is not on the pcie
do you know how this ended up dissasembled?
so my dads friend had a kid that wanted to disassmble the board, then he couldnt put it back together so he gave it to me, and if i could put it back together, then i could keep it
so i assumked it was still working but he didnt tell me anything else
ahhh
well if you could ask if it was working before that would be nice
my bet is
this kid got antsy and wanted to take something apart
didnt see the cable so when he pulled the gpu off the cooler
bye bye connector
yuuuup
and then it didnt work lol
but like, hypothetically, does that wire need to be plugged in for the the GPU to be fully functional
cause i could care less about the aesthetics
DO NOT PLUG IT IN
it likely doesnt need to be there but other parts of the gpu could be broken
which would fry your whole pc
HAHAH, i couldnt even if i truly wanted to , its like actually completely disassembled
but ill try giving the guy a call to see if it was working or not before the disassembly
can you send a few close ups of both sides of the card?
ill tell you if its just trash or not
pcb part onlky?
yeah it seems like the pcb is ok and doesnt have any scratches from a screwdriver, knocked off components, anything that looks obviously bad or burnt
but thats me looking at it through discord
totally could miss something without having it in my hands
if you can take out the led cable and he said it was working but they didnt test it yet there is a decent chance it would still work
this is a at your own risk thing
if it was me I wouldnt trust plugging it into the system without a professional looking at it
i get what youre tying to say
well, i appreciate your help, and ill def take all your word sseriously
i hope so, best of luck to you
tyty

Make sure during reassembly that you safe off those two connectors. You don't want them free balling in the assembly and causing a short.
havent had time to reasemble it with midterms coming up, but ill make sure to do that
@fleet vine Anything that you see here as you like getting down to component level with electronics
i think that might be leftover residue from the thermal pad
the picture is not that great
sorry about that
It could be, I’m not for sure. But it is the only thing I was able to find
i will retake that photo now, i ust got a new phone so hopefulyl quality is better lol
Yeah the damage doesn't see much more than cosmetic other than the connector. You probably could repin it if you bought a new one, but it's not going to cause the unit to NOT work. If you have an old mobo / PSU kicking around it might be worth testing it in non-essential hardware to make sure it's not going to pop anything you value.
Snipey likes fixing old electronics so he might have better insights.
so i have an old PSU, i could just hook it up to that?? to see if itll explode
I don't think it will power on unless you have it installed in a MB that can go through the basic boot process. (ie Ram / CPU / PSU) .. I understand some people might not have a whole spare computer laying around.
i see, i have like 2 spare pcs that i built for my father, but not sure if i would risk blowing them up, is there any other way to test it?
You would need a working PC, even monitor. You might be able to find a PC shop that would be willing to test it for you in one of their rigs. Could just say I picked up a card and want to get it tested. I really don't see this card blowing up your system tho.
screw it, when i have the time, imma buy replace thermal pads and then reassemble the GPU, then plug it straight into my PC
YOLO
@subtle prism just wanted to let you know, i finally got the time to repad and reassemble the 3080, IT WORKS, and i just got myself a $30 3080 FE
Worth! Congrats!!!
nice
i was pretty confused reading all this until i went to the original post, i thought this was the guy who broke a capacitor off and i was going to be shocked the gpu works
