Specs:
Ryzen 9 5900x CPU
Gigabyte b550i aorus pro ax motherboard
NZXT H1 V2 case
32GB Corsiar ram
GeForce RTX 3070
Samsung SSD 970gb EVO Plus 2Tb
Windows 11 Pro

Issue:
Having troubles with game performance in general for my new pc setup, I was originally running games on a 970gtx GPU and decided to upgrade my graphics card to something more modern and got a Zotac Gaming NVIDIA 3070 and installed it to my setup. Now that I've installed it, I've tried running multiple games like Ark ASA, Halo Infinite as well as even Rocket League and noticed and increase of lag and fps dropping with the same low settings that I used previously not to mention even worse performance on higher settings.

Troubleshooting done:
Airflow seems fine, at peak gaming my gpu reaches around 80 and cpu to 70
I've tried installing the latest drivers
I've updated fully to the latest windows versions

Let me know if you have any ideas to help solve this, thank you! ⛷️ ⛷️

  1. download DDU from here: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/display-driver-uninstaller-ddu- or https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/

  2. run DDU to remove all old display drivers.

  3. download a fresh copy of your new GPU drivers.

post back for results. good luck!

Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) - Remove AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL Graphics Drivers Cleanly - DDU is a driver removal utility that helps you completely uninstall AMD/NVIDIA graphics card drivers and packages from your system, leaving no leftovers behind, including registry keys, folders, files, and driver store.

#

really shouldnt need to ddu with this. a clean nvidia install of the newest driver should be enough

#

how do i know? i've done the same thing from my gtx 970 to a 3070. didnt have the lag issue but it removes the profiles and settings when doing a clean install

#

you should also make sure you're on the latest bios and chipset driver

#

and also enable rebar in bios

#

i guess if you still want to do a ddu clean, go for it

bet bet, imma try all of these

#

I’ll post back when I get the chance to⛷️⛷️

Alright I got a pretty unfortunate update, I’ve tried everything listed, no change, and I’m also getting another pretty bad issue where the pc shuts off when gaming

#

When it shuts off randomly like that it’s pretty weird in the way it does it, it says no signal on my monitor and the screen then goes dark while the background processes are still on, like I’ll have a yt video on and I can still hear it

#

My keyboard and mouse works as well when it does a crash like this

#

Had to basically unplug it to shut it down fully

#

Any more ideas? @gilded sierra @glass matrix

was the 3070 new or used? looking back i didn't even notice you said gpu temperature was 80c. 80c is kind of high for a 3070, even the dual fan versions. not all 3070 dual fan models hit 80c, but because you have it in a small case and possibly not enough airflow, it's starting to thermal throttle

#

if the gpu fans are ramping up quickly to 100% when gaming or even running high temperature when idle, that very likely means the gpu needs to be repasted

#

to be clear, 80c is fine for the gpu as long as it's not running the fans at 100%, because at max fan and 80c it means the thermal paste is failing and has either "pumped out" or dried up and needs to be repasted

is the gpu loud when gaming?

timid quest
#

this is just the main menu screen, getting 15 fps and a 84 temp

#

😭

#

Was looking online and saw some suggestions to undervolt, do you think that could help?

gilded sierra
#

my guess is they just looked at it and did nothing and passed it off as refurbished

it's not hard to repaste the card yourself

timid quest
#

#

#

they did the worst thing possible. they opened it and made it worse

timid quest
#

for real😭

#

aye btw you think I should clean up that green part too? they got a good line of paste caked on it

gilded sierra
#

only the die matters

#

what paste are you using?

timid quest
#

just put in Corsair XTM50 on it

#

bouta see if it runs rn⛷

# timid quest <@819418503815495680> tried it out for about an hour now, still is crashing temp...

do you have HWINFO64 installed? if not, maybe try and use that to monitor temps as it displays other parameters including other temperature sensors. maybe other components are heating up way too much.

just hope the card's vram arent "dying" due to improper mining (if u bought the card used from unknown source).

you can try undervolting as well and see if that helps stabilize the GPU. some heavily mined cards work fine with undervolt with minimal loss in performance

#

they did mention all of thus.

#

i would take it apart again and check the paste coverage. better to use a bit too much than not enough

#

my own 970 needed to get repasted a second time before it started working properly again mostly but still had crashing and i think it might be because of the DisplayPort

slow kayak
#

could just use the new kryosheet from thermal grizzly I'd trust it on my gpu. f it.

#

maybe not a 4090 but I don't own one of those so not my monkey not my circus.

gilded sierra
#

oh wait im dumb.. i was thining gtx 970 not 3070

#

i repasted my 3070 and it fixed my overheating issue

#

it's possible you either didnt use enough paste or you didnt tighten the screws down properly

#

you may also need to add new thermal pads for the vram

#

there is a spacer on the gpu, so it may be that the heatsink isnt resting properly on the die for proper cooling

timid quest
#

ngl I might just return it and buy a new one, seems like it’s just in general bad condition

#

but I will try one more time, you think that spacer is a problem?

gilded sierra
#

they may have had the wrong thickness thermal pads to replace what was there

#

my asus tuf 3070 didnt have that spacer. im looking at pictures of other 3070s to see if they have one and i dont see one on gigabyte cards either

#

@timid questare you opening it again to check it?

#

show a picture of the coverage. it might show if it's getting proper contact to the cooler

#

ok so the zotac cards do have a spacer on the die

timid quest
#

holy shit my temps dropped by half after doing this

#

imma put it through the ark test and see if it’s different on the main menu

timid quest
#

10 fps to 60

#

actually its at like 200 now, just took off the fps cap
