#newly built pc shows red DRAM light on mobo, powers on (fans, lights) but wont display anything.

hello, i just built this pc yesterday it has:
gigabyte b550 aorus pro ac
rtx 3060 ti
kraken 360 rgb cooler
corsair vengeance ddr4 3200 (4x 8gb) and Ryzen 5 5600x
etc.

the problem is that i try to turn it on for the first time ever and the fans and rgb turn on, but the motherboard shows a red light on the DRAM light. Ive tried clearing the cmos (maybe i did it incorrectly not sure), im thinking of updating the bios but im a little confused because nothing shows up on my monitor so how do i get to the bios? please help i cant sleep until i fix this :(

pine iron
#

Start simple, try to boot with one stick of ram.

placid cave
#

i shouldve mentioned that my bad. ive switched all 4 sticks out, changed the places around, done one at a time, two at a time, etc.

errant shard
#

Corsair has that issue. Just pop out 2 sticks and only use 2 until you can update the BIOS

pine iron
#

So even with one stick it won’t boot?

placid cave
#

yes even with one it wont boot

#

or two

#

would it be possible to access the bios without the ram?

errant shard
#

What board? I'd guess Gigabyte/Aorus 🙂

pine iron
#

Nope

placid cave
#

gigabyte aorus b500 pro ac

#

b550*

#

oops

pine iron
#

okay that was confusing me lol

errant shard
#

Yep, you more than likely need a BIOS update to support your CPU

#

Budget boards are hardly ever updated off the shelf

pine iron
#

What cpu you got?

placid cave
#

i did read that in pcpartpicker when i was putting my stuff together

#

ryzen 5 5600x

errant shard
#

But Gigabyte/Aorus loves to show DRAM error for any error

#

If your RAM is seated properly then I would reseat the CPU but check all your cable connections first

#

Usually CPU initializes first. But Gigabyte just shows it getting stuck on DRAM

fleet grotto
#

Have you make sure the ram is seated properly?

errant shard
#

Also, disconnect anything that isn't necessary just to get into the BIOS. RGB, drives, stuff like that

placid cave
#

would i have to remove the kraken cooler even if the thermal paste has already touched it

pine iron
#

Im sure that board has a bios flash button. If you have another computer to work with and a usb get an updated bios and flash it.

errant shard
#

I doubt that budget board has bios flashback. But if it does then cool

placid cave
#

i saw that online but im a little confused about that, if it doesnt display anything while it boots up would i be able to flash it?

pine iron
#

It has it

errant shard
#

So Gigabyte isn't entirely incompetent haha

placid cave
#

where might i find it? do you know?

pine iron
#

Also budget? The damn board is like $200

errant shard
#

Just search Google for that board model and go to their site. Should be under support > Drivers and BIOS

pine iron
#

Go to the motherboard site and find your boards exact make and model

placid cave
#

i meant the flash button^

pine iron
#

Go under the support section and theyll have a bios section

pine iron
errant shard
#

The one I'm thinking of is $110

pine iron
#

Tiny little button

errant shard
#

There's the Gigabyte UD AC and Aorus Pro AC

placid cave
#

so do i have to take the motherboard out?

pine iron
#

No

#

Leave everything in and plugged

placid cave
#

sorry i dont know what the rear io is

pine iron
#

Get the bios onto a usb and make sure you follow the instructions for making the usb

errant shard
#

The inputs on the back of the board

pine iron
fleet grotto
#

@placid cave make sure the ram is properly seated first. Try to have 1 stick in at a time. Make sure you press so u can hear the click on both end. Try to replace each stick you got.

placid cave
#

okay which bios version should i choose?

errant shard
placid cave
#

the newest?

#

oh i see the button

pine iron
errant shard
#

With Gigabyte I'd be careful. Half the time they want you to do it in an order

placid cave
#

i looked for it before i swear i couldnt find it

#

okay newest version

pine iron
#

Follow a video for creating the usb if you need to

errant shard
#

Just make sure to read the description under it

placid cave
#

this is the description: Checksum : 705D
AMD AGESA V2 1.2.0.8
Optimized performance for Ryzen 5000 X3D series processors

errant shard
#

The BIOS version

placid cave
#

does it imply i have to do anything special or anything like that

errant shard
#

No

placid cave
#

google said to just make sure the usb said fat32 in the properties

errant shard
#

But you need a flash drive

pine iron
#

There’s a specific way to flash so you don’t screw things up. Once it starts and you’re sure it working don’t touch the pc until the flash is complete

placid cave
#

i have a flash drive

#

do i just download the file on to there

errant shard
#

It's easier with one that has a light

#

Unzip it to the flash drive

placid cave
#

a flash drive with a light?

#

and okay

errant shard
#

Yeah, that shows the status of the read/write process. So you're not waiting without knowing. But board should have an LED as well

placid cave
#

yeah my flashdrive has a light

pine iron
#

Yeah usually boards have an led to show you somethings happening

fleet grotto
placid cave
#

i did that too

#

so i just put the zip file in the usb and extract all right

errant shard
#

Haha, yeah. But most boards like Gigabyte hide the LED under the I/O shield. So makes it a pain

#

Just extract to the usb

errant shard
#

But make sure it's the only file on your thumb drive

placid cave
#

yes the extracted files are the only thing on the drive

pine iron
#

Just to make things a bit easier https://youtu.be/ABNgLr7YhTc

RECOMMENDE...

▶ Play video
errant shard
#

Then just plug it into your board and hold the button for 3 seconds or until the light starts flashing

#

When it stops its done

placid cave
#

so i turn on the power supply and the pc or just the power supply

errant shard
#

With or without CPU doesn't matter. Just an option with certain boards

#

Power supply only

placid cave
#

okay thank you

#

ill watch the video

pine iron
#

Yeah just follow it to a t and you’ll be set

errant shard
#

Oh, if it has one make sure you plug the USB into the port that says BIOS

#

Usually white in coor

#

Color

#

Yeah it's right above the BIOS button

#

On your board

placid cave
#

yeah i see it

#

the video shows a chart that says the 5600 needs the f13 bios update

errant shard
#

@placid cave Good luck. Just plug it in there and hold the BIOS flashback button for 3 seconds

placid cave
#

but the newest is f18 i think

errant shard
#

That's fine

placid cave
#

f16*

#

newest still?

errant shard
#

Just an older BIOS. It's fine

placid cave
#

okay thank you

errant shard
#

Just older Video

#

DO NOT cut power or turn on your system until the light stops flashing

#

Then remove the flash drive and try your system

#

Shouldn't take long..a few minutes or less. Unless you use ASUS lol

pine iron
errant shard
#

ASUS always messes up and sticks for me

placid cave
#

wait the video says the bios file should be the only thing on the usb does that mean i should delete the other files that i extracted onto the usb from the usb

errant shard
#

No

#

I already led you through that step

pine iron
#

Yes

#

The only thing on that usb should be the flash file

errant shard
#

It's the files from the BIOS extraction

pine iron
#

Drive should be formatted before hand

errant shard
#

It will ignore anything that's not a BIOS file from the extraction

pine iron
#

Yeah when you download it comes with multiple files, but the only one you’re moving to the drive is the flash file

pine iron
placid cave
#

so if i delete the other two will anything bad happen

errant shard
#

Never had an issue with it. Or they wouldn't include them lol

placid cave
#

or will it just not matter

#

either way

errant shard
#

You don't need to

#

But it doesn't matter

#

Whichever you want to do

placid cave
#

okay

#

im js gonna delete em

#

its text file and a efiflash.exe one

pine iron
#

You telling me you had problems flashing on asus and the telling me you don’t delete the other files is telling 😅

errant shard
#

Yeah, no

pine iron
#

But ey, our milleage may vary

errant shard
#

Since ASUS is the only one >_>

#

Maybe their Flashback tool is just trash lol

placid cave
#

the guy says to take the ram out

#

should i?

errant shard
#

Or you've been thinking that you updated your BIOS and haven't. 🤣

#

Don't need to

pine iron
placid cave
#

ok i like safety

errant shard
#

It's more of a feature than anything.

placid cave
#

took it out

pine iron
#

I flash with all 4 dimms populated, doesn’t change a thing

errant shard
#

Gigabyte just likes boasting you can do it without CPU/RAM lol

#

Its helpful at times

placid cave
#

oh so i dont need to actually see anything occur like i dont need an hdmi or anything?

#

would i be able to anyway? or is that just not a thing

#

i just have to rely on the flash of the usb?

pine iron
#

Ye

#

Again not sure where the boards leds are located for the flash but there’s usually an led sequence on the board to let you know if it’s doing anything.

#

I think it tells you the same thing in the video, can’t remember

errant shard
#

Yeah, sometimes a board will post. But I wouldn't expect it.

#

Usually ASUS again..haha

placid cave
#

yeah im scared i held the button for 3 seconds like in the video

#

but my usb isnt flashing

#

and i dont see any led on the motherboard

errant shard
#

Might need to hold it longer

#

Hold until it flashes

placid cave
#

would it affect anything if it was turned on already and i just didnt know it?

errant shard
#

The light would be on on at least one of the parts

placid cave
#

okay

errant shard
#

To avoid that specific issue

#

Do you have the power supply flipped on

placid cave
#

i did it for like 8 seconds and nothing

#

yes i do

#

and my motherboard lit up when i turned it on

errant shard
#

Did you use the right port?

#

Right above that button

placid cave
#

yeah the white one

#

that says bios

pine iron
#

Could you post the link to the exact page you used to get your bios?

placid cave
#

yea

errant shard
#

Is your flash drive FAT32?But sometimes it's just picky about certain drives

placid cave
#

i see the little hole where the status light is supposed to be

#

but no light

#

yeah the properties say its fat32

errant shard
#

Try a different flash drive

#

Some boards are anal

placid cave
#

i dont have another unfortunetly

errant shard
#

Yikes

#

Did you actually extract the files?

placid cave
#

yea

#

they were all in the flashdrive and all i left was the bin file

errant shard
#

Sounds like Gigabyte.

placid cave
#

the bios one

errant shard
#

Did you run the rename file

#

If there was one

placid cave
#

what do you mean

errant shard
#

Was there a file called BIOS Renamer

placid cave
#

no

#

i renamed it myself

#

according to the video

errant shard
#

Did you actually change the extension

placid cave
#

sorry?

errant shard
#

O lawf

#

Lawd.

#

What did you rename it to?

placid cave
#

GIGABYTE.bin

errant shard
#

That doesn't seem right

placid cave
#

thats what the video said

errant shard
#

I would try again without changing it

placid cave
#

okay so should i just take the usb out

#

or is there a specific order i have to do it in

#

to avoid damaging something

errant shard
#

Just take it out.

placid cave
#

okay sorry

#

i took it out

pine iron
#

Aight I’m back.

errant shard
#

Format it and then extract the files again

placid cave
#

its formatted to fat32

errant shard
#

Not what I asked or said

#

It's just to format it to be blank

#

Right click > Format

placid cave
#

okay i did that

errant shard
#

I dont think you have the right BIOS

#

Latest BIOS for your board is F16e

placid cave
#

yeah thats the one i downloaded

errant shard
#

You said F18

placid cave
#

yeah i corrected myself sorry

errant shard
#

Doesn't hurt to double check

placid cave
#

yeah it says f16e before being renamed

errant shard
#

Now extract the files again.

placid cave
#

ok its doing that

errant shard
#

Doesn't always need to be renamed unless it says to or has a BIOS renamer executable

placid cave
errant shard
#

Try it with how it is

placid cave
#

okay

errant shard
#

Don't delete or rename anything

placid cave
#

should i turn my power supply off and back on or just leave as is

#

sorry if thats a dumb question

errant shard
#

Just leave ut

#

It

placid cave
#

okay im gonna try it now

#

still no led

errant shard
#

Are you letting go of the button? Lol

#

Hold 3 seconds and release

placid cave
#

no i held for like 8 seconds

#

and nothing

errant shard
#

Don't continue to hold it

#

Count to 3 and let go

placid cave
#

okay

errant shard
#

See if it starts

placid cave
#

nothing

errant shard
#

And make sure it's fully pressed in

placid cave
#

yea i pressed it all the way in

errant shard
#

Then idk bro.

#

It just doesn't like your drive

#

It happens

#

It should support it out of the box. I feel like you have something connected wrong or that it didn't like

#

The CPU. Not the usb

pine iron
#

Driving home hence why I can’t chime in

#

But once I’m back I got you bro

placid cave
#

okay

#

would it be better for me to just gts and figure it out tommorow its 1 am ive been at it for hours

pine iron
#

We in the same time zone

placid cave
#

or will you be home soon enough

pine iron
#

I’ll be home in 10

placid cave
#

okay ill wait

#

could it possibly be because i have my mouse and keyboard usb's connected in the normal usb ports

#

or would that have nothing to do with it

#

wait i just noticed the cable that goes connected to my cpu cooler isnt connected

#

idk if that has anything to do with it but i just noticed

pine iron
#

I gotchu in a moment, just got home

placid cave
#

okay

#

ty

errant shard
#

Did you follow every step on the video

placid cave
#

yea

errant shard
#

I feel like it's the wrong extension

placid cave
#

even renaming it but you said not to

errant shard
#

Sometimes you don't have to.

#

Plus it didn't work when you did

#

Did they show you how-to rename it

placid cave
#

yea

#

hit rename..

errant shard
#

Did they change the extension name in the video?

pine iron
#

aight, much easier to work at my desk

errant shard
#

You can't just rename it gigabyte.bin

pine iron
#

leggo

errant shard
#

Good luck Asterisk

pine iron
#

just for some sanity checks, gimme the exact name of your board on the motherboard box. A picture would be nice too

placid cave
#

b550 aorus pro ac

#

and yea onesec i need to redownload discord on my phone for pictures

errant shard
#

Not the B550m?

placid cave
#

just says b550

errant shard
#

I feel like it's the extension Name but the video didn't explain how to change that. So have fun Asterisk

pine iron
#

it did, he just renames it in the video. I'm gonna verify everything in a moment, just pullling up manuals and shi

molten peak
#

You don't need to rename it. I have a gigabyte board and I never rename

errant shard
#

It's not a BIN file to begin with.

#

Yeah I tried both ways Mystic. Good to see you again

molten peak
#

Are you trying to flash a bios?

placid cave
#

yea

errant shard
#

Yeah he has an Aorus board with DRAM error light. The usual

pine iron
#

yeah, should bee a bin file

#

"shouldn't

errant shard
#

Oh really? Lol

placid cave
#

that’s the box

molten peak
#

Smh you got an old one

placid cave
#

i got like 3 years ago when i first wanted to build a pc

#

but never finished it

#

till now

molten peak
#

Ok. Did you make sure that the CPU and the mobo was getting power

placid cave
#

yea the motherboard turns on

pine iron
#

Why does the sticker have to cover where I would see if it's an M or not lol

placid cave
#

i can take it off

#

hookup

#

holdup

errant shard
#

My Aorus X570 Master didn't act right until 4 BIOS updates later. Early adoption sucks sometimes

molten peak
#

I mean when flashing the bios, you can't have the cpu installed or any component installed

#

I think

errant shard
#

Should say on the side of the box lmao

placid cave
#

too hard to take off

#

lol

errant shard
#

You can Mystic. But Gigabyte might want it not

molten peak
#

Just power to the 24 pin and the eps 8 pin

placid cave
#

but it says it on the side

errant shard
#

I think you're right Mystic for Gigabyte. Take out CPU and RAM

pine iron
#

so lemme get my end ready and we can get to work

molten peak
#

Who's doing the work here?

errant shard
#

@placid cave

molten peak
#

So I kinda know

errant shard
#

I haven't flashed mine in so long.

molten peak
#

It's been a while since I've done this specific step before

errant shard
#

But mine booted to BIOS his didnt

molten peak
#

He has a ryzen 3000 bios

#

Not a 5000 ready

placid cave
#

okay so if i have to take the cooler off with thermal paste pre installed will that affect the thermal paste at all

molten peak
#

No since it's only going to be for a little bit

#

Just make sure the paste doesn't touch a table

errant shard
#

Yeah, I got that. But that doesn't effect BIOS flashback..usually

placid cave
#

okay

errant shard
#

Gigabyte is anal

molten peak
errant shard
#

I didn't say it would >_>

molten peak
#

That's why I brought that up

pine iron
#

@placid cave you have the 16E file in your usb?

#

No name change?

molten peak
#

Can someone screenshot what the contents of the USB are?

errant shard
#

Yall have fun

placid cave
#

yea

placid cave
#

oh wait lemme redo it

molten peak
#

If I see the contents, I'll know what to do from there

pine iron
#

we're gonna put all the extracted files into the usb this time.

#

I normally don't but just for the hell of it

errant shard
#

Already tried that Asterisk

placid cave
pine iron
#

missing 1

#

the exec.bat

placid cave
#

okay lemme redo it

molten peak
#

i think that's correct

errant shard
#

It's just hidden

molten peak
#

those files look correct

placid cave
#

yea the video told me to turn hidden items on

#

and it went away

#

okay wait lemme take out my cpu cooler and cpu first

molten peak
#

the main one is the .16e file

pine iron
#

I've got the bios downloaded on my end, doesn't matter if I hide or unhide I still see the same things so that's kinda weird, but ey, I'ma just go through these steps just for sanity

molten peak
#

why are you flashing your bios?

pine iron
#

so you've got 4 files on the usb correct?

pine iron
#

especially if it's been sitting around for 3 years

molten peak
#

i mean you

pine iron
#

I'm not

#

just looking at the files

molten peak
#

oh ok

placid cave
#

theres 4 in the zip

#

i extracted all

#

but theres only 3

#

visible

pine iron
#

coo

#

aight now lets try to flash again

#

I'm gonna double check the manual just to make sure the usb is correct

#

Should for sure be the white one but just in case

placid cave
#

taking cooler out rn\

molten peak
#

im looking at the manual and i don't see anything about power being supplied to the 24 and the 8 pin

#

hmmm

#

ok looks like a video i found stated to plug in only the 24 pin and 8 pin

placid cave
#

im so scared to take my cpu out

#

whats the safest approach

pine iron
#

you really don't need to

placid cave
#

but didnt he say he was pretty sure it should be in there

#

shouldnt*

molten peak
#

the cpu should not be in there

#

the safest way would be to undo the lever, then gently take out the CPU

pine iron
#

It's fine, but sure we can get it out of there. Move the latch to detach the cpu, grab it carefully from the sides and just lift up

molten peak
#

i personally would take out the ssd as well

placid cave
#

i just have a harddrive

#

but also the cpu just feels pretty in there

molten peak
#

did you undo the lever?

pine iron
#

If you've lifted the latch up it will detach from the socket

placid cave
#

oh my god

#

i didnt do it all the way

#

oopsies

#

okay should i try to flashy flashy

pine iron
#

yep

placid cave
#

also should my motherboard lights be on the whole time

#

cuz they turned out when i turned the power supply on

#

but after a little

#

they turned off

pine iron
#

yes, there should be power to the board

molten peak
#

Just the 24 pin and cpu 8 pin

#

thats all you need

placid cave
#

those are both in

pine iron
#

cool

placid cave
#

but does it matter that the lights are no longer on

pine iron
#

put it in the white usb port and try to flash

placid cave
#

ok

molten peak
#

im starting to wonder if you do need to rename the file now lol

placid cave
#

nothing

pine iron
#

don't worry I'm trying that next

placid cave
#

no light on usb or on the little bios thing

pine iron
#

gigabyte.bin with no caps

placid cave
#

okay

pine iron
#

just the 16e file

molten peak
#

how long did you press the button for

placid cave
#

4 seconds

#

okay should i just delete the other 2 or only pull out the bin file from the zip

#

cuz what about the hidden one

molten peak
#

you rename the .16e to the .bin

pine iron
#

no just change the file from within the usb

#

don't touch anything else

molten peak
#

was the USB formatted before this?

placid cave
#

yes

#

so i leave the other two files in there

#

?

pine iron
#

yes

#

for now leave em in

placid cave
#

okay

#

ima try the button now

#

nothing

pine iron
#

Cool. Even on the very first press your usb should flash so if it doesn't it's not being read at all

placid cave
#

i didnt see a light on either

molten peak
#

it should be GIGABYTE.bin

placid cave
#

its an 8gb usb

molten peak
#

also, just the 1 file needs to be in there

placid cave
#

okay

#

renaming and deleting other files

molten peak
#

also, is the power supply switched on?

pine iron
#

I don't think it matters, I'm almost certain the drive isn't being read. I want this to work but this might be a usb for this.

placid cave
#

yes the psu is on

#

would i need a different usb you think?

molten peak
#

and you shouldn't need to hold the Q-Flash button

#

i don't think it's a USB issue

pine iron
#

it's a 3 second hold for sure.

molten peak
#

other videos i saw, its only a press

pine iron
#

every videos I've seen is 3 seconds so far

#

at least for gigabyte

#

but yeah just try with the bin file only and all caps, I doubt this will work but at least all boxes will be checked

placid cave
#

i switched it to all caps but it just didnt change

molten peak
#

ok. reformat the drive again

#

and pull the files in there again

placid cave
molten peak
#

yes

#

did you make sure that it was the .16e file that was renamed?

placid cave
#

yes

molten peak
#

you should be set

placid cave
#

okay trying that now

#

or should i try doing it right when i turn the psu on and my motherboard lights are still on

molten peak
#

is the gpu plugged into the mobo

placid cave
#

no

molten peak
#

ok good

#

just making sure

placid cave
#

nothing happend

molten peak
#

you can flip the power switch once

#

just to make sure power is being supplied to the mobo

#

then plug in the USB

#

then press the button for 1-2 seconds

#

and make sure the usb is in the correct slot

pine iron
#

@placid cave 2 quick questions. What's the drive size and is it usb 2.0 or 3.0?

placid cave
#

8gb

molten peak
#

USB version should not matter

pine iron
#

it absolutely can

molten peak
#

8 gb usb should be fine as well

placid cave
#

i switched my psu off and on and my motherboard didnt turn on

molten peak
#

is the PSU plugged into the wall

placid cave
#

yes

molten peak
#

and is that cable plugged into the psu

placid cave
#

and the 8 pin and 24 are in

#

yes

molten peak
#

can we get a picture of the setup

#

i thnk i've done a bios flash from a usb 3.0 drive

pine iron
#

you can do 2.0 or 3.0 but some boards fail on 3.0

#

not uncommon but again just checking boxes, regardless it should work with either or

#

but I'm gonna try something different if this fails again

placid cave
#

it’s a little messy rn

pine iron
#

all gucci

#

did you try the new flash setup already?

placid cave
#

yea

pine iron
#

okay

#

format to fat16 if you have the option on that drive

placid cave
#

let me check

#

cant

pine iron
#

damn

molten peak
#

i don't think this should matter at all but i do see a few cables plugged in other than the 24 pin and the 8 pin

placid cave
#

do you want absolutely nothing else

#

like not even the pin ones

#

cuz tbh i dont even remember how to put those back

pine iron
#

it won't matter, I'm genuinly gonna chalk this up to the usb for sure. Try to get a usb 2.0 drive if you can and try again in the morning.

molten peak
#

@worn geode any inputs on this?

placid cave
#

okay im gonna go to bed then i have to work tommorow anyway

#

thanks for trying guys

#

ill try and get a usb tmr

worn geode
#

whats the issue

#

can someone give me a 5 seconds rundown

placid cave
#

okay but im going to sleep right after i send this

#

newly built pc

#

dram light is red

#

on motherboard

#

nothing else works plus cpu is too new for motherboard

#

so trying to update bios

#

flash bios

#

not working though

#

issue is tbd

#

going to get a new flashdrive tomorrow

#

in hopes the flashdrive is the issue

worn geode
#

oof

molten peak
#

All steps seem to be correct to do the bios flash

#

But it's not working for some reason

worn geode
#

yeah idk, i never use q-flash

#

what board and cpu

molten peak
#

B550 Aorus Pro AC and 5600x

#

The board was purchased before release of ryzen 5000

kindred siren
#

im like 90% sure you need to do bios flashback with a usb 2.0 drive or it wont read it. i have indirect experience of this with my friend unable to do flashback on one of his newegg shuffle boards. all he had were usb 3.0 drives and had to go buy a 2.0 drive for the flashback to work

placid cave
#

that’s the thing tho my usb is 2.0

#

the little plastic thing inside is black

molten peak
#

It could be 3.0

kindred siren
# placid cave that’s the thing tho my usb is 2.0

if you still cant do it with a new usb drive, the only other "practical" option is to buy a cheap new or used ryzen 1000 to 3000 series cpu or see if amd still has the option to send you a cpu for flashing that you send back

#

a repair shop should be able to do it for you but they would probably charge $50 or more. a used ryzen 1000 cpu is probably $20 and a new cpu can be returned

molten peak
#

I know that brand of USB and it should be 3.0

placid cave
#

oh okay ill go buy a new one soon

kindred siren
#

try amd first since you would need to send the cpu back anyway if you were buying one

kindred siren
placid cave
#

oh i meant flashdrive

#

but yea ill try that after

#

if it doesnt work

#

which pray to god it does

kindred siren
#

just updated the link to the new support article specifically mentioning ryzen 5000 cpus, just incase it causes any issues or the rma shit is different

placid cave
#

i found a different flashdrive in my house

#

how would i know if its 3. o 2.0\

kindred siren
#

you have the brand and model number on it right there

placid cave
#

okay its 2.0]

#

im going try to bios flash it again

#

nothing ughhhhh

placid cave
#

how come my motherboard doesnt light up once i remove all the other parts (cpu, gpu, cooler)

#

that just seems weird to me but idk if it has anything to do with why the bios flash wont work

#

atp do i just gotta buy a newer motherboard

#

im gonna try not updating to the newest version and just the version that supports the 5000 series cpus

#

anddddd nothing

#

the bios led just does not turn on at all

worn geode
placid cave
#

yeah i did all of that

#

i tried two diff bios versions too

worn geode
#

even the ssd?

placid cave
#

i dont have an ssd just a hard drive

#

but no i left it plug in i just realized

#

does the harddrive matter

worn geode
#

yeah

#

unplug the sata cord

placid cave
#

from the motherboard or from the hhd

#

or both

worn geode
#

both

placid cave
#

okay

#

trying it again

#

womp womp no led

#

could it be possible that it just doesnt work because ive had the board sitting around for like 3 years

worn geode
#

that is a possibility

#

it couldve been DoA

#

is the usb fat32?

placid cave
#

yes

#

whats DoA

#

any recommendations for a different motherboard that would solve my problems

#

ive tried everything at this point

kindred siren
#

i think it's time to just get a ryzen 1000 to 3000 cpu either through amd from the loan kit or buy one

#

the motherboard is a decent board, you just need to update the bios

placid cave
#

youre saying i get an older cpu so that i can get into the bios, update it, then put my new cpu back in right

kindred siren
#

that is the only other way if flashback wont work

#

try amd loan boot kit rma first and if they wont loan a cpu, either just buy one online or at a local store or bring it to a shop. buying a new cpu could be expensive but you can or should be able to return it. buying used could be decently cheap but then you have a cpu you dont need

#

a repair ship may charge a small or a large fee depending on how chill they are

#

ask them first how much it would cost for a bios update

placid cave
#

okay ima do the loan kit first

errant shard
#

Doesn't this board have dual BIOS?

kindred siren
placid cave
#

sorry if i don’t answer if the next few hours i have to go to work thanks for all the help tho i’ll keep you update on this loan thing

errant shard
#

If you have a friend you can just borrow one. Or buy one at Best Buy/Amazon, flash BIOS, send it back lol

#

Didi anyone ask if you bought the board new or used?

#

But I've had issues with Gigabyte boards new and used. But used could be more likely to be damaged

placid cave
#

yeah it’s new

#

i think buying and returning is probably the move tbh

placid cave
#

which cpu should i buy

worn geode
#

a 3300

placid cave
#

aight

#

would a ryzen 5 3600 work?

#

the box says 3rd gen ready but idk if the first number is the gen or if the 3 in the 3600 is

worn geode
#

yeah

#

3600 works

placid cave
#

okay

#

ignore that it it’s in spanish

#

but im gonna order this one then

#

yes? 👍🏻 just double checking

worn geode
#

make sure its sold and shipped by amazon

#

or at least follows amazon's return policy

placid cave
#

yeah i checked that it says free returns

placid cave
#

alright

#

new cpu came in

#

im gonna try to start it up with this one

#

i dont wanna get any thermal paste on it tho cuz im gonna return

#

is it fine if my cpu cooler isnt on it as long as its plugged in

worn geode
#

youre gonna want a cpu cooler on it

placid cave
#

even if i has thermal paste on it

worn geode
#

there's really not much you can do

placid cave
#

i can just wipe it after tho right

worn geode
#

yeah

placid cave
#

this time i should install all 4 of my ram s5ticks right

worn geode
#

just install one

#

no need to install all 4

placid cave
#

okay

worn geode
#

you just need to update the bios

placid cave
#

okay so once i turn it on im supposed to spam delete or something right

worn geode
#

yeah

placid cave
#

or do i wait to see if itll post first

worn geode
#

once it posts just spam delete

placid cave
#

the flashdrive goes in the bios thing still right

worn geode
#

doesn't matter

placid cave
#

so should i put it in the bios one or just the regular one

worn geode
#

doesnt matter

placid cave
#

\

#

my ram stick didnt light up when i turned my psu on and they normally do

#

the light got stuck on dram

#

nvm

#

wasn’t in fully

worn geode
#

lol

placid cave
#

it’s in fully but the light is still stuck on dram

worn geode
#

what slot is it in

placid cave
#

2nd

worn geode
#

did you restart

placid cave
#

i turned the psu off and back on

worn geode
#

turn PSU off and let it sit for like 5 seconds before turning it back on

placid cave
#

okay

#

no good

#

does this mean the ram should be in the first slot

worn geode
#

no thats in the proper slot

#

it might just be a bad board

placid cave
#

wait a min

#

my ram is 3600

worn geode
#

its not at 3600 by default

placid cave
#

this says up to 3200 only

worn geode
#

its fine

placid cave
#

oh

worn geode
#

you have to go in and enable it once you get into bios

placid cave
#

except i can’t get in

#

😔😔

#

so what should i do

worn geode
#

its probably a bad board

placid cave
#

so i should just buy a new board then ?

worn geode
#

you cuold RMA the board

placid cave
#

what’s that mean

worn geode
#

you send it back for a replacement if its within warranty period

#

how long have you had this board

placid cave
#

about 3 years

#

maybe a little less

#

but no less than 2 years

worn geode
#

probably out of warranty

placid cave
#

it’s fine new board it’s gonna have to be i guess

#

what do you recommend

worn geode
#

whats your budget

placid cave
#

what’s a decent budget i don’t even remember what i payed for this board

#

maybe 250 ish max?

#

as long as i can use it well out of the box

#

i’ll be satisfied

placid cave
#

i don’t want to have to update a bios ever again

placid cave
#

do they all support the 5600x out of the box ?

worn geode
#

yes

placid cave
#

alright

#

i think im gonna go with the third one

worn geode
#

oh wait

#

do you need wifi

placid cave
#

uhh wym

#

i cant connect an ethernet to it my routers too far

#

if that’s what you mean

placid cave
#

are there any white ones out there? even if it’s only a little white? just cuz that’s the theme im trying to go for

#

what ab this one

worn geode
#

cheap

#

and no wifi

placid cave
#

okay

placid cave
#

im not really rocking w the camo it’s fine i’ll just stick with the other options

#

is this the same one?

#

MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk MAX WiFi - Placa base para juegos (AMD AM4, DDR4, PCIe 4.0, SATA 6Gb/s, M.2, USB 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI/DP, ATX, Wi-Fi 6E, procesadores AMD Ryzen 5000) https://a.co/d/bnMoVBE

#

ignore the spanish LMAO

#

as the one you sent me

#

just on amazon cuz i have prime

worn geode
#

yes

placid cave
#

alright

worn geode
#

idk how you dont like the camo

#

like

#

its going to be covered up by your gpu

placid cave
#

it’s just not for me sorry i didn’t mean to like sound annoying or anything

#

alright i’m gonna order it then

#

thanks

#

also i didn’t originally get an sad

#

ssd

#

because i have a hard drive

#

would you recommend getting on anyway

#

one*

worn geode
#

yeH

kindred siren
#

@placid cavebtw... it's still possible your ram is faulty

#

im assuming you never tested each stick individually after getting the ryzen 3000 cpu. the dram led coming on after getting a new cpu could mean one or more modules are bad. in fact... im wondering if the ram was the issue the whole time

#

@worn geodethoughts when you have a chance?

worn geode
#

maybe

placid cave
#

also my bios flash button wasn’t working on my motherboard either

#

but the ram is brand new

kindred siren
#

brand new could still be faulty

placid cave
#

update: installed my new motherboard and computer boots up the bios now

#

just waiting till i get home to install windows but other than that i think i’m all good

#

thanks for all the help guys

worn geode
#

yep, thats good to hear

#

so it was the board

placid cave
#

i guess so but now i have another issue

#

i can’t seem to get windows up and running

#

i put it on the windows creation tool on a usb

#

changed the boot order in my bios so the usb boots first

#

the usb flashes when i start my pc but then i just get sent to the bios after it stops flashing

#

the first two times i did it i got a solid blue screen that kind of looked like windows but then it was stuck and my pc turned off

#

second time i got like two displaced windows logos

#

and then it turned off

worn geode
#

was it a click or something

#

like did something in the pc click

placid cave
#

yea

#

it make a clicking noise and just shut off

placid cave
#

how can i fix

kindred siren
#

might be possible you got another defective motherboard

#

or your psu is also defective and we didnt catch that

placid cave
#

mannnnn

#

it can’t be anything else ?

placid cave
#

?

placid cave
#

does it mess up because i’m tryna install windows on a harddrive

solid pecan
#

I mean it's just slow.. might been too slow if it's an old 5200

placid cave
#

so should i get an ssd

kindred siren
placid cave
#

recomendations

#

?

worn geode
#

budget?

placid cave
#

idk around $50

worn geode
#

well

placid cave
#

is the samsung 970 evo plus 1tb any good

still latchBOT
worn geode
#

bruh

still latchBOT
dense bone
#

Wait wtf

#

@undone meteor is bot supposed to do this? omegalul

dense bone
worn geode
kindred siren
# dense bone Yeah, fantastic drive

they changed the components on at least the 2TB making it slower than the older model like mine, and the 1TB was the same price as gen4 drives so not much point getting the 970 evo+

worn geode
#

1tb gen4 drive the same price

kindred siren
worn geode
#

only like $6 more expensive

#

most samsung drives are incredibly overpriced

dense bone
#

Not really the place for the discussion, if you have recommendations then give them

#

That was gonna be my question lol what gen 4 drives

#

Gen 4 drives also run hotter...ergo lower lifespan if you are a monke and not taking care of it

kindred siren
#

the ones already recommended

#

the OP's motherboard comes with a heatsink/heatspreader

dense bone
#

Just realized those were actually shared

kindred siren
#

anyway. there are options we just need to list one the OP has access to

dense bone
#

Also just realized y'all are comparing to basically 50% off products -___- saying they are basically the same price...one is still 2x the price of the other but getting it on sale

#

6 dollars more at the moment*

#

Was curious about the MTBF and whether drives have gotten much better at all

kindred siren
#

im not even sure if they're buying in the US market. it's been too long since the thread was started

worn geode
dense bone
#

This is the drive that seems to normally list for around ~$50

worn geode
#

z440 no dram cache iirc

dense bone
#

Also much lower MTBF, by nearly half

#

More closely aligns with the 970 evo plus

kindred siren
worn geode
#

oh

#

LOL

#

i just know its a cheap drive

dense bone
#

Much less cache* likely

#

Probably halved as well

kindred siren
#

i havent been keeping up with all the new drives coming out for the lower end of the market

#

also ssd reviews are not one of the things i see posted on front pages of tech review sites. they posting click bait trash more often these days

dense bone
#

Bruh -_- I went to TGroup's main site trying to find clearer numbers

#

@worn geode

worn geode
hollow ravine
#

if you are refering to the dumb link without price, yes it does that if it has any issues getting the data. It will still post the item but a dumbed down version

dense bone
#

My bad, didn't realize that the links were shared manually, it looks like the bot just responded to a request for recommendations lmao

hollow ravine
#

it shows in the link who shared it

undone meteor
dense bone
#

I managed to read just about everything aside from "Shared by" and Markus' reaction had me spooked the bot had gone wild - myb

worn geode
#

I’ve become self aware

little does jensen know im wayyy ahead with the AI bullshit
