Don't force yourself to do anything.
Yes, what you're doing, only looking up a word a sentence here and there is fine. It's making your input more comprehensible, which is the entire mechanism behind language acquisition.
Not doing intensive is fine.
People get by with just freeflow.
Also interactive exists.
100% free (0 lookups) = input is less comprehensible
freeflow with a lookup every sentence = more comprehensible

I did mostly freeflow/interactive until intensive wasn't painful for me to do

I mean, pretty sure most of what I do is priming and freeflow, and even if it isn't much, I am making progress
I will answer a different way: yes but it's irrelevant
What will slow down progress considerably is burnout and crashing out
Much more considerably than not doing lookups all the time
This was just my experience, but trying to do intensive at the beginning felt painful for me as well considering I had little foundation to go off of. Once I finished my starter deck and had some freeflow hours under my belt, intensive became a lot less annoying
