He talks about it in his Q and A but basically he wrote down the most common words for each of the four pitch patterns and paid attention to it during his regular immersion until he could recognize them. Then he got a pitch accent dictionary , I forget which one but it's like the most popular one, and he memorized most if not all the rules

#

And this is not in any interview but now that he has a Japanese girlfriend most likely he just asks her for corrections

That being said, the strategy he recommends for most people is to just learn how to recognize the 4 pitch patterns and not worry too much about rules, just go through immersion normally. Depending on how good you want your pitch to be, make sure your listening always stays ahead of your reading. There's a trade-off though because it's harder to learn from listening than from reading .

Speaking from personal experience, just being aware of pitch accent and that there are highs and lows is not enough, you need to get to the point where you can recognize the pitch patterns In order to start acquiring it . Before I did lots of immersion with a surface level knowledge of pitch accent, thinking that I could just pick it up now that I knew that there were highs and lows in the language. This did not work even after hundreds of hours of audio . once I Finally took the time to train myself to recognize the four pitch patterns I could start memorizing the pitches of words.

To that I would add memorizing the rules for recognizing the difference between heiban and kifuku. I personally haven't done this but I feel like I really regret that I didn't , it's just that as far as I know there isn't a resource that collects all of the differences into one table for reference and I haven't had the time to make one myself but I would if I had more time.

If you can find one online go for it.
