For a really quick start, give this video a watch if you have t already.

We have this thread for listing good beginner content that is frequently added to and I recommend perusing it for a bit https://discord.com/channels/778787713012727809/1023440478475141180
You immerse by immersing. That's it. In all seriousness though, watch this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=705&v=m0GfLNQeRvI&feature=youtu.be
Here is a first draft attempt at helping beginners understand immersion better. Why we do it early and what exactly we do during immersion. Please leave comments so future versions can be shorter and more informative.
Note: I try and OVER explain the idea so people really confused can get a lot of info to help express the idea. Sorry for the ra...
Damn it.
I was beaten to it.
lol
Well, to add to it, you can try to watch things that you've seen before in English or things that you've seen using English subs.
like anime
Well duh.
Yeah, pretty much.
If you haven't yet, it's probably a good idea to find a way to set up ASBPlayer.
ok
You can use it to get Japanese subs on streamed videos.
anime is particularly good if you like it because the community has created so many good resources to improve the experience of immersing with it and make it more worth your while for basically any level of progress
If you can get this working, you should be good.
However, if you're too lazy (which makes sense cuz setting up everything is kind of annoying task, so I don't blame you), you can use animelon.
If you want to, you can also use animelon.
Animelon is a bit limited in terms of its anime selection though.
so do i download the anime i wanna use
In this video I present a tool that one can use to load custom subtitles to online streams (such as zoro.to, youtube, netflix, etc.)
If you love it consider supporting the original creator, staring their Github repository, or simply sharing it with others. Have a good one!
Extension's github: https://github.com/killergerbah/asbplayer
Extension'...
do i need to unzip or can i just extract
if you're using asbplayer yeah you need to download the subtitles
then you click and drag them into the video player
check kitsunekko.net to see if theyve got some on there for what you wanna watch
ok so i downloaded the anime i want but theres still no subtitles
what do i do
Follow the tutorial.
Like, idk what you want me to say.
Which bit are you stuck on specifically?
Get into call and stream your screen
hold up i think i got this imma just check that i got the right settings and chrome tab thing
its workin but theres no dictionary thing
You need to install yomichan as a separate program.
https://foosoft.net/projects/yomichan/
The dictionary is yomichan, browser extension
do you have dictionaries installed
no how do i do that
the site i linked explains what to do and has some dictionaries linked, for now you can get jmdict. Save it somewhere, don't unzip it, and import it in yomichan
you can worry about getting more varied and up-to-date dictionaries later on once you've got everything set up
you're fine with jmdict off that list for now
Jmnedict is a name dictionary, kireicake you can safely ignore, kanjidic is basically more or less what it says on the tin, and innocent corpus is a frequency list
Just add the language you're most comfortable with using you don't need them all
ok i did it
once you've got yomichan installed and dictionaries imported, hover over text while holding the scan key to use the pop-up dictionary
okkkk ty
for sake of completeness for the thread for anyone else clicking in here with similar questions this information is summarized in the roadmap https://refold.la/simplified
Yomichan and ASBPlayer aren't on the roadmap. 💀
Oh, wait.
Nvm.
You were talking about immersion related questions.
