#What is the difference between active and intensive immersion?

Intensive and freeflow are the 2 types of active immersion
Intensive is like, your sitting there with a dictionary looking up every or almost every word you come across
Where freeflow your paying attention, but your not actively looking things up. You look can look up a couple words if you think you need to, but generally the goal with free flow is to let it flow over you
Oh I see. I was a little confused. Based on what I’ve read and what I listened to Matt talk about it seemed like he was saying that sitting there looking up every single word could hinder immersion. Is that not the common consensus? I assumed “free flow” was the main and most effective type of active immersion. @coarse ibex @fair jacinth
One is not more effective than the other. They're both important and serve different purposes.
If you're sitting down with the intent to do freeflow, then yes, pausing too much would hinder that.
But if your intention is to do intensive, that's the whole point of the exercise.
Both of them are important, imo
With Free flow, my goal is to get used to the sound of the language and pay attention so I can hear words I've learned or pick out new ones I may want to look up and learn, or make note of.
Like if I recognize that a word is being said alot I'll try and look it up if its something new.
With intensive my goal is to try and recognize and study the language as much as I can in a more analytical sense? (Hard to explain)
Like, I'll pause to see a whole sentence and look up every word I dont know, then reread the sentence so its context is better understood now that I have the whole meaning.
Intensive is kinda exhausting though so I only do as much as I am able without giving myself a headache
I hope that makes sense 🙇
Also with free flow, I for lack of a better term, go with the flow while I watch videos or play a game
So I jump around different activities if I get bored or overwhelmed if the comprehension level is too high
Right now for intensive, I've picked a 'project' so to speak and come back to it specifically to get as much as I can from it (rewatch or reread, etc) until the media is over
For that I'm trying to pick things that are simple specifically or peak my interest alot so I don't get lost in the sauce of dictionary look ups lol
