#Games with furigana and text size

Hello! Two questions I've been thinking about as I try to increase how much I read (again)

  1. The person running Game Gengo recommends games with furigana (like Ni no Kuni) for beginners. I think furigana is regarded negatively in the refold community (could be wrong). I was wondering if it's a complete waste of time or if it's a worthwhile way to spend time learning japanese. One of the top things I plan to do with japanese is play games so this question is quite important for me.
Edit: my current vocabulary is around 2k words, and I am wondering if acquisition through furigana in the context of a game is a valid way to increase that

  2. On everything where I read japanese (discord, the internet) I always make the text size significantly bigger (2x or so) in order to see the kanji more clearly and distinguish between the strokes. Is this a mistake? I presume japanese natives do not need this as they have enough experience and intuition with kanji that they can just read them at a 12 point size, so is this a bad habit? I've found that it makes it significantly less frustrating/slow to increase text size but I can try to put up with it if it's a mistake.

Thanks for the help.

I don’t have definitive answers for you, but I can give my personal thoughts.

  1. Furigana isn’t necessarily seen negatively here so much as it’s seen as a crutch. If you have good lookup software, you can see the reading of whatever word you need. But it requires you to actually choose to look that word up, rather than the answer being given to you off the bat. I think this is conducive to learning.

  2. I wouldn’t. You’ll learn to recognize the shapes without it and won’t be able to increase text size when reading, say, a piece of paper, so you should let go of that crutch now and start building your intuition and recognition ability. I personally don’t have this issue but I have 20/20 eyesight, so if that’s an issue you might need help from others with experience there.

  1. Furigana is fine, but for games there are textractor setups that make it to where you can look up unknown kanji very easily, so I wouldn't limit yourself to only games with furigana.

  2. I don't think it's too big of a deal. Being able to read kanji more fluently in spite of blurry text, bad handwriting, or small font is something that comes with time as you read more and more

Textractor doesn't just work with VNs. Have you tried to search for hooks in games you play yet?

I have used it before

it's just very unreliable depending on the game and just a hassle in general sadly
