Do you find it is most useful to study the jp1k deck before you do immersion each day? After? As it stands i usually fit it somewhere in the middle of the day after passively listening to something but I wonder if it would be best to do it first so I could possibly catch a new word while listening each day.

I would assume it's personal preference.
I tend to have a significant higher retention when i do it in the morning (first two hours after waking up).
If i do it late i fail probaply twice as much cards and therefore need much longer to get it done.
Sometimes when i don't have enough time in the morning i do it over the day in small chunks (because work), but still try to get it done before noon.

For me I don't really mind when I do it in relation to immersing but one thing for sure is that my retention is absolutely terrible when I do it later in the day (17:00 and later).

I’ve done both for extended periods of time. Nowadays, I choose to do it in the morning regardless of whether I’m immersing afterwards. It’s less stressful, and I’m less likely to forget to do it or be forced to do it at late hours when retention crashes. Many people on here choose to do it right before immersing and say it helps them warm up for immersion, if that’s want you want to know. However, I think doing it at a time that is convenient and makes you most likely to succeed in doing it every day is the most important thing.

I do it before immersion because then I get to look out for the words in my immersion

and because I like getting things out of the way earlier in the day
