Are there any theory references I can read with regards to how buffering (and the rules for it) is designed/implemented? I'm puzzled over how folks determine how much buffering (yards, landscaping, and so on) is needed, mostly around industrial uses in particular

In California, the different Air Quality Management Districts and Air Basins may have literature on this.

Their information would likely be based on modeling information.

Might be unique to Australia, but when you say buffer, I typically think of that in terms of ecology or acoustics.
