#When half your RAM goes POOF!

....then what the hell is going on? Is it likely that it has just stopped working?
I moved my CPU about yesterday but I wasn't like, juggling it, as it sits on a CPU stand on wheels I just pulled it out from the wall and back in to clean behind.
I will open and make sure nothing is loose but how would that even happen? They click in place quite properly and shouldn't just hop out... right?
I'm a bit scared, tbh. D:
First image is from 19/11 and second is from just now, 22/11.

So I opened her up and they were both shining nice and bright in port 2 and 4. I took the opportunity to get rid of some dust and such and moved the RAMs over to port 1 and 3 and now they work again. Mystery not solved. o.0

Key word shouldn't just hop out, but RAM is well known to be super finicky. Even the mounting pressure of the CPU cooler can affect whether the RAM works or not

Did you try just taking them out and reseating them in the same slots again? I only say that because many/most motherboards prioritize slots 2/4 if you're only using two sticks so that is technically ideal if it would still work

Regardless, glad your memory isn't just totally borked and at least works in 1/3 😅

Thank you! I didn't try the same ports, no. I will open her back up in a few days and clean some more as I ran out of pressured air now and couldn't get as pedantic as I wanted. xD
So I will move back to 1 and 3 then and see what happens!

I am worried about her though, she has a signature move that she did just now: She starts up, all looks good and then, after 1-10 minutes she goes "HAHA, PSYYYCH!" (not literally, obviously) and the screen freezes, turns black and some fan goes double speed while she responds to nothing but a hard power off. So yeah... she's not lady-like. 😮

#

I doubt that is RAM related though.

steady venture
#

Ooof yeah sounds like there is some kind of problem going on there for sure though

#

Also, it would be funny if our PCs yelled "HAHA, PSYYYCH!" when they were about to crash

#

When my friend built her he messed up a bit with the cooling paste on the processor, can that have caused it?

#

Hahahah, that would be awesome!

#

I prefer it to BSOD.

steady venture
#

It could be any number of things, including a thermal paste issue (ie - cooling/overheating issue). It does seem more like a hardware issue. Are you getting BSOD or just the black screen freeze? Cause that could be a graphics card issue - I'd take that out and reseat it too for good measure

lethal fulcrum
#

It's not the blue screen and it's not the black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left, it's just un-dead, sort of...
And when I restart her she pretends all is fine and we're all friends. She's some kind of were-computer.

#

Oi, wait, you're onto something about the graphics, check this message I just got!

steady venture
#

Time for a driver update or two!

lethal fulcrum
#

Uhm.... should my graphics show up here or am I blind or dumb?

#

I tried updating recently but it said all was dandy.

# lethal fulcrum Uhm.... should my graphics show up here or am I blind or dumb?

Nope, doesn't show up here... and not usually updated through Windows Update either

They usually have their own applications that run in the background. Based on the error it looks like you're using AMD graphics. I'm not familiar with their software but check for any AMD Radeon software that is on your PC and driver upgrade options should be found there

lethal fulcrum
#

I have one app called Ryzen Master:

#

The other won't open, it gives me the message from before: Radeon Master.

#

Right, I'll hit that website then.

lethal fulcrum
steady venture
#

Ryzen Master is for the CPU. Sounds like maybe your graphics management app is borked if it doesn't even open. Your graphics card is usually shown in that app, similar to how the Ryzen app says what CPU you have

On Windows 11 you can see your installed graphics card at System > Display > Advanced Display. Don't remember exactly where it is in W10 but should be similar. You can probably right-click on the desktop and go directly to display settings to get there faster

#

BTW, if you had this PC and was sort of poor, which RAM sticks would you add?

steady venture
#

Now that is a loaded question lol

lethal fulcrum
#

Haha, sorry, you don't need to answer! xD

steady venture
#

Ideally you would either

A) add a set that exactly matches the existing set so you have 4x8GB with all 4 sticks matching
or
B) buy an entirely new set of 32 to 64GB and replace what's there

As stated before, RAM is known to be quite finicky and sticks of different speeds/types/sizes/even brands might not play well together. You can get lucky and have it work fine if you mix-n-match, or it might not work at all. Or it works, but performs at a much slower speed than rated for

lethal fulcrum
#

brb, factory reset and restart.

lethal fulcrum
steady venture
#

yes pairs are basically always better than single sticks because your system uses the ram in dual-channel mode

#

if you can find two of the same, that would probably be the most financially viable option, depending on what's there

lethal fulcrum
#

Haha, my screen became GameBoy sized. xD

#

Or... resolutioned.

steady venture
#

graphics driver updates do funny things lol

#

should go back to normal after the update

#

though i've never used AMD graphics...well, not in the last 10 years anyway lol

lethal fulcrum
#

Yup, it's back to sweetness! Start menu is a little wide but other than that everything is a-okay resolution wise! 😊

lethal fulcrum
steady venture
#

I like your setup :)...though I couldn't survive that far away from the display

lethal fulcrum
#

Until I blow it by saying I know nothing, of course.

steady venture
lethal fulcrum
#

Thanks! It's pretty good, it's 42" and looks farther than it is. I'm a sofa dweller, haha. 😄

steady venture
#

I'm too much a creature of habit, so I go with what's familiar. I'm sure someday I'll feel frisky and try Ryzen out. Maybe next upgrade cycle in a couple of years

I see.

lethal fulcrum
#

I just hope this setup, maybe with a RAM addition, will last me for a couple of years now because munnies are scarse. xD

#

You're very kind and fun to talk to, thank you so much again. 😄

#

And pardon for being a tad daft about some stuff.

steady venture
#

tbh 32GB is more than enough for basically everything but Cities Skylines and straight-up rendering

#

you're very welcome, and no worries 😅

lethal fulcrum
#

Yeah, I hope it will be.... If I have figured out this undeath issue now, with your aid, my main concern is drives because they're getting old.
But yeah, those will be ran to the ground before I buy new ones. xD

steady venture
#

the beauty of the near-constant upgrade path with PCs

lethal fulcrum
#

I love that!

steady venture
#

I still like it though, part of the fun

lethal fulcrum
#

Haha, jinx!

steady venture
#

😅

lethal fulcrum
#

I'll probably never be a laptop person. I'm just always at home anyway, so no point in spending extra money for less stuff. ^^

#

I'm actually using my old laptop SSHD in this desktop for storage, come to think of it.

#

I had a lappie for a few years as I went to school and such, but still always prefered my deskie.

steady venture
#

yeah i don't really know why I got it tbh. I think I was just sick of switching my main display on my PC to the TV if I wanted to use that instead of sitting at my desk. It's easier just to have a second computer lol...totally unnecessary

lethal fulcrum
steady venture
#

I'm thinking I should have built a little mini media PC, but the laptop will come in handy for the one vacation I take every couple of years

lethal fulcrum
#

I used a long HDMI and cordless mouse and keyboard to be able to sit in my sofa but after a few months I noticed I ALWAYS sat in my sofa and that HDMI cable across the floor made me angry daily, so I just moved over here permanently instead. 🙂

lethal fulcrum
#

trying not to mentioned mirrored displays

#

Not a fan, huh? 😛

steady venture
#

They can just be so much of a pain to deal with

#

I use dual displays on my desktop (each with different resolutions), and my TV is a 3rd different resolution

#

so it gets messy

lethal fulcrum
#

Ouch, yes, i can see why!

steady venture
#

Windows be like 😵‍💫 when I try to switch it up

lethal fulcrum
#

I have my TV and my 16" drawing screen but they're the same resolution, so I just happily extend.

#

Windows is often bit of a **** though.

steady venture
#

works okay when they are the same resolution...usually

lethal fulcrum
#

Oh yay, friendship, thank you! 😄

lethal fulcrum
steady venture
#

And I have far too much, unfortunately
