Not going to lie, I’ve always found odd and quite cringey the fact that foreigners, especially when it comes to kpop, refer to male idols as “oppa”. I understand if its finality is to have respect of the idol and show appreciation to the culture, but I just know for a fact that most of them go and use that specific honorific because it’s “cute”. Perhaps it’s just me who isn’t really into aegyo or such things (it also depends), but I am not able for my life to digest it.
I wanted to know tho, what Koreans think about this. Is it somehow disrespectful, cute, indifferent…?

as a fellow forigner anyone who calls someone who they've never met and never will meet 오빠/언니/형/누나 is super cringe
imo at best its ignorant at worst disrespectful but again im just a 외국인
It’s totally fine, feel free to share your opinion anyways :D I asked Koreans because perhaps it’s different how they see it but I appreciate anyone who answers
😂 other than racist koreans kpop fans are the most disrespectful and annoying people ive met so I may be biased
Facts, I hate telling someone I like kpop because I might seem one of those people lmao
you should be fine, most of the fans ive met online have been pretty nice
its the ones that actually end up in korea that are the trouble 😂
But also the case is kind of different when it comes to idols vs normal people. Like I’ve seen even Koreans call their idols oppa even sometimes if they are older than them
You can decide whether or not you wish to treat them like a parasocial boyfriend but you cannot deny the fact that that is part of what they are selling
Obviously don’t call a real person who you just met oppa, that’s weird
I LOVE PARASOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS I WANT TO BE SOLD ON THE IDEA OF PEOPLE AS A PRODUCT AS OPPOSED TO WHAT THOSE PEOPLE CREATE INSPIRING DEEP LOYALTY TO A BRAND USING HUMANS AS MARKETING ENGINES
obvious /s
but yeah irl if you're younger its polite to ask and if you're older you can give permission
if i were to talk abt my brother to someone in korean i couldnt bring myself to use 오빠, this is how bad it's gotten imo 😭 and ive heard lots of koreans say things like that but i think theres probably also a lot of people that are fine with it, i figure its an individual thing kinda, depends on the person
but lets wait for a native to reply bc foreigners may not be reliable sources lol
no older
why wouldn’t you call him 오빠
in the context that its often used its been sexualized a lot too from what ive seen so it just kinda feels rly weird to me
FACTS
GG @past pebble, you just reached level 10! Congrats!
Ayyy
😳ummm maybe look at different context
LMAO
y’all worry me sometimes 😂
probably theres so many weird ass kpop stans
||im glad idk any weird ones irl tbh i would shove tissues in their mouths with all the weird things they say||
/hj
the ones so that actually make it to korea are downright insufferable
the amount of times i’ve heard “if you don’t like kpop why are you in korea” is honestly disheartening
they make other fans look so bad
from other foreigners
as if its korea's only trait
omg makes me so angry
This
honestly i find even the normal fans a bit odd
like idk the names of most of my favorite bands
much less their shoe size blood type or other weird stuff
HAHAHAHAHA
😂😂😂
