When Rome 2 was finally updated to not be a glitchy game anymore like it was at release. It's come a long way from the days of braindead AI. I mean, it's still dumb as a rock. But at least they put up something of a fight on occasion.
Rome 1 battles being some of the best in the series. Since Rome 2 battles have been terribly janky and off putting. Switching from single entities within units having 1-2 hit points, to the newer system where whole units have a pool of hp, and each unit withun having 20 hit points makes battles turn into blobs hitting blobs, instead of every individual unit fighting it's own battle.
*was a mistake.
*The Year is 450, Attila lay dead from old age after rampaging through western europe. The Western Roman empire endured, britannia, gaul and iberia were lost and regained, illyria was razed by the last few hunnic stacks, final act of defiance of a now dwindling horde. Germanic barbarians tried migrating but were eventually put to the sword, only thing that remains east of the Rhine being ashes and dust.
And yet now the Sassanids and their vassal states are looming on the horizon, having taken Egypt and Anatolia whilst the ERE is relegated to their islandic holdings as their western land was burnt to the ground.*
- Reminiscence of my first WRE campaign
Attila was my favourite Total War alongside Shogun 2 until Three Kingdoms came along, of course the game is not without issues - in fact I think Attila has the most problems I "take issue" with (be it for balancing or overall product polish & optimization) but that is also because that game is just amazing.
And if the base game isn't amazing enough by itself, Age of Charlemagne added another layer to it by giving us a wholly different timeperiod. (altho some folks never forgave the smaller theater, I remember some of the forum posts of the Bulgarians fans 😏)
To this day I still hope CA will go back to the game.
Meanwhile if you ask me about a memorable Rome 2 experience.
Well the release was definitely memorable but not in the best way (haha) - altho again, CA Horsham did fix most of the game before stopping support and then CA Sofia imho made it all better (altho again, fixed some things, created new problems) with the second patch cycle. And honestly, might be in the mood to replay Empire Divided. 👀
When I stopped playing these games (which are good) I experienced massive IRL success and happiness and my life became increasingly better in terms of happiness and sense of purpose
I can only attribute to my drive for happiness and what it means to me personally.
I am glad people enjoy it and find happiness in the series and that makes me feel good for them
Just because I don’t care for the series in my life I am extremely happy for Total Wars growth
I thank the publisher/company for that I think and am happy for their success and profit they deserve :)
💯
Checking Rome 1 in my brother's PC, mine could not handle it. Was addicted, had to purchase a new PC very soon to be able to run it:)
As Brutii Destroying everything with post Marian armies
The good old days before Win 11 when Rome 2 ran without freezing on loading or crashing 😭
Gauls
.... Turn 10, last week, trying desperately to strike a peace deal with britons & a trade agreement with spain.... Success!
Only to get betrayed by both after five turns as soon as my armies moved southward on the massing Julii.
They rampaged through the whole of Gaul but Alesia stands!
I aged 10 years within those 30 turns of absolute Total War, it was litteral!
And after countless dead britons & spain finally fight between themselves and strike me a lasting peace deal with war reparations just as the germans cross the rhine!! 🔥 🚒 ☠️
Surprise! Germans are on full phalanx and breaking through is a tough cookie. Finally transitioning to swordsmen & heavy use of Fanatics manages to swarth the enemy armies and allow me to punish them deep & push them back to the north sea. In the heart of the black forest, a settlement unlocks me Forester warbands, I finally have archers! xD
Now, back to Rome....
The Julii are crushed to dust, their cities plundered & occupied & Rome at the tip of my fingers. But six armies of Brutii stand guard, and the Scipii keep flanking via Dalmatia.
Lugotorix the Conqueror, an absolute chad with 50 noble cavalry men a pop, blasts through everything they throw at me and dies in combat in northern Italy cutting the Roman knot in Greece with my Greek protectorate, capturing Athen and the Temple of Zeus, and proceed to land in southern italy to distract the Brutii!
It works, I pounce onto rome after scyuhing through 3 additional brutii armies invading my lands and once & for all, Rome is besieged, burned to dust.. And the Campaign is won!
And the Greek betray me to get Sparta & Athen back. But that is another story....
And I kid you not, I hadn't replayed Rome:Total War in so many years, but this is the best fun I've had ever. The battles are so good & incisive, morale breaks & tough as hell units are
Coming out of a really nice Shogun2 Rise of the Samurai Taira campaign (1st!!), I sincerely wish battles & even campaign came back to this in Spirit!Troy/pharaoh did really well but damn, in-battle withdrawal & Ai has some smarts, so many little features like these making the campaign so much better! Including free-moving armies, 3K was a good alternative to that but it needs to come back it's just the best to hunt down rebels & have small clashes in between large frontline action!
Burning cities
helicopter spot from rome 2 😄
=> oh snap its not a memory ! i still regulary play it !
(thanks to the late patch which "fixed it")
One of my favorite memories would be when I lead a coastal siege assault on a Roman city as the Parthians. I used artillery ships to break down some sections of the wall near the port. I then landed my hillmen at the beach in front of the breach as well as at the port. My hillmen stormed the defenses with ranged support from my navy. This experience taught me how fun coastal siege battles can be.
Rome 2 Total was the first ever Total War game i ever played, before I got this game I was obsessed with watching videos for Total War both vanilla and modded like Third Age along with Mount and Blade videos lol and once i learn that Wal-Mart sold physical copies i bought it when i got the money and played the crap out of it loving every second of it even though my laptop couldn't run it very well and i wasn't good at the game and not knowing what i was doing lol and also thanks to Rome 2 Total War i learned what Steam was and got my account :D
Last save, Getea campaign but with faction named Dacio-Thracian confederation settled around Danube, I carefully plan expansion to east, where was mighty Armenians Empire rules. In true, I had a good relations with them since the start of the save but...war had started. After longest war with some faction, we finally met at the last of Armenian settlemant Arsamosata and that was a hell. At the finall moment of battle it was at the edge who wins. They had a last stand at the capture point with 2 spears units and foothold general and me with 2 missiles units and mounted general. When they charged I am shaking and routing, whn I strike with missiles they are shaking and routing. That was at the edge all the way. At the end, we capture the last Armenian city and destroyed the faction but with honoured and respect for the brave faction which fight with a last man to defend.
Well, that was the best memories from Roman Era and mixed emotions about the game, pleased that I won and sad that I must destroy the great faction in that specific save.
Cheers.
