You can get a dm20 on Amazon for less than 20 rn
If you want a dmx there's some going for around 40
But if you want a cheaper option a dm20 is your best bet

There’s like 3-5 colors of the DM20 on Amazon. If you don’t like those colors (I didn’t), for a few dollars more you can find probably 4-6 more color choices on eBay. I waited til I found a white one for a reasonable price ($25) and have that in the mail coming to me now.
Make sure it’s a 20th and not an old 97 model (unless you want that version!)
Of course this might be affect by where you live (these are my experiences as someone who lives in the USA)

Depending where you are, you might find some pretty good deals on Japanese proxy sites if you're in the market for classic digimon vpets ( fromjapan comes to mind)
Generally avoid eBay since the aftermarket prices can get super inflated
As a beginner's choice, DM20 and/or DMX are great ones to start with. DM20 is good if you like a variety of different guys to raise, while DMX has some pretty interesting gameplay features

DMX was my first device and I'll say that it was great. If you want one of the limited ones, I got my wargreymon device on aliexpress for the same price as what a normal one goes for on most other stores
