ASCII Rogue-like Digimon World project.

I've been working on somewhat of a recreation of the digimon world game, I figured I'd share it here for anyone interested. I'll also be sharing a playable demo for people to test out.

Overview

This ASCII-style rogue-like pays tribute to Digimon World One, enhanced with expanded content and some updated mechanics. Visuals will primarily feature digicode symbols, with environments built using either 8x8 or 16x16 tile sets for a retro yet polished look. Players will indirectly guide their Digimon partner, focusing on care, exploration, and strategy.

Core Features

  1. ASCII Styled with Digicode and Tile Set Environments

    • Digicode symbols will represent characters, UI elements, and other gameplay visuals.
    • Environments will be constructed using either 8x8 or 16x16 tile sets, adding depth and clarity, while adhering to platform constraints.
  2. Classic Locations and Features

    • File Island will be faithfully recreated, featuring key areas like Native Forest, Gear Savannah, and Infinity Mountain.
    • Familiar core mechanics, including Digimon feeding, training, and evolution, are maintained to capture the original’s spirit.

  1. Expanded Content

    • Mega-Level Digimon: Introduce powerful Mega evolutions from Digital Monster Version Color.
    • New File Island Locations: Explore additional lore-inspired areas.
    • Server Continent: A vast new region populated by Digimon from the Pendulum and Pendulum Color series.
    • Complete Digimon Roster: Includes all Digimon from the Digital Monster V-Pet series versions 1–5, the Version Color, the Pendulum V-Pet, and the Pendulum Color series.
  2. Indirect Digimon Control

    • Instead of having a protagonist that the Digimon follows, Players will influence their partner Digimon’s decisions and actions, emphasizing strategy and nurturing.
  3. Combat System Options

    • Gameplay will feature one of two combat systems:
      • The battle system from Digimon World One, providing strategic depth.
      • The streamlined V-Pet battle system, emphasizing quick, reactive decision-making.

Platform Considerations

  • Nintendo Gameboy: Compact and portable, though its screen size will influence design decisions for clarity.
  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES): Offers a larger screen and greater versatility for the expanded scope of the project.

The game is being designed with flexibility to support either platform—or possibly both—with testing to finalize the most optimal platform options.

Gameplay Loop

  1. Exploration

    • Travel across File Island and the Server Continent, uncovering secrets, gathering resources, and encountering a variety of Digimon.
  2. Partner Interaction

    • Care for your Digimon to shape their growth, guiding them toward new evolutionary paths, including Mega stages.
  3. Combat

    • Participate in tactical battles using either the Digimon World One based system or the V-Pet battle system.

Here's a quick video so show the aesthetic I'm going for. This view is for the Gameboy, so it's screen size is limited which is why I'm considering my options. I'm attempting to use as much digicode as possible, but I'll definitely have to use some traditional ASCII characters to fill in some blanks.

Note that this video does not include the HUD that includes the current time and various care elements.
