they function, but it's harder to win battles
the BE watches have update-able firmware though and are the current model going forward. there's also community-made mods to improve some of it's shortcomings
it's less about battling a lot so much as the win-rate
that's what the question channel is for ;P
the mod is as simple as downloading the firmware, running some running some pre-made patchers, then putting it on a compatible SD card to install it

yeah, the most difficult part is actually finding the right SD card, but we are ironing that out for bandai

depending where you live, you can probably find matches on this server for cards you can get that should work for updating it if you don't already have something that works lying around (the big cheat go-to for most is the small Micro-SD that came with N3DSs if you own one of those)
