Model: Lenovo Legion 7 16ACHg6

Describe the issue: May the 18th, everything is working as intended. I go to sleep for the day and wake up to use my PC again. May the 19th, I start up a game (Overwatch 2), and suddenly I'm getting massive temperature changes. CPU I hadn't monitored very often but I'm reaching 100C+ when before I'd probably typically have a 80C-85C float. GPU wise Anywhere from 75-85C it would float and not throttle at all. Now I'm reaching 90C and I'm getting throttle which cut my typical fps on the game (120 or so) down to 15-30.

My Idles are also fairly high. Typically I'd never known my CPU to idle at 70C. Even without me monitoring it constantly I just don't recall it being there. My GPU idles at 60C or so, which is fairly alarming to me. I watched my GPU temp skyrocket from this idle to the previous described gaming temp in less than a minute.

What have you tried already?: I've worked with the fan speeds in BIOS as well as Vantage to see if using them at their max would help. This didn't solve anything. I've looked into power settings and tweaked my min-max's. This didn't solve anything. I updated graphics driver after the issue arose to see if that could've been the culprit. Nothing. Updated my BIOS. Still nothing. I ran malware bytes and virus scans to see if I was being mined or something was deliberately gnawing on my overall performance, nothing found.

On the hardware end I've used compressed air to blow out my fans. Took the back plate off to ensure I'm getting to the little nooks. I've troubleshooted it between being on AC power and battery power and the heighted temps are reached on AC but on battery I still see it struggling. Both my fans are working fine from what I can tell and are even now working harder than they were the day before seeing as I've never had to do anything when it comes to cooling. Only other thing I haven't tried, is checking the thermal paste which from my research many folks were talking about.

Note: I've only had my Legion 7 for about a year now. It would baffle me honestly if the thermal paste needed replacing after only a year, but it is something I can accept if it is the case.

Note: This issue happened suddenly, not gradually. It was like night and day. One day I'm running entire VR programs and medium level games, the next day I can't even idle at a normal idle temp.

When did it start producing the issue: May 19th, 2023, no more than 6-7 hours later after shutting it down for the night on May 18th, 2023.
Did you install new drivers or software?: Only after the issue was experienced. GPU Drivers, and BIOS Update (60WW)
Can you provide images/videos to show us the issue: Upon request I'll do so, so I can give the most up to date screen shots/videos.

Try to do an EC reset, guide in #1020285176531669012

Alright, just performed that. Seems to be no dice. Uploading current temp pictures.

Is the fan still blowing air out?

Yes both fans are blowing air out. Although, the air is cool. I remember reading that this could be caused by a vapor chamber issue.

Was the heatsink removed at any point?

No.

#

I've only ever taken the back plate off and that was just to use compressed air.

#

I would think even with a thermal paste issue, the fans would at the least keep temperatures lower than these. Only when gaming or doing something with medium to high strain would I expect this to occur. I also remember that the thermal paste that is originally applied is quite formidable and should at least last two years, not just one.

#

Of course with the issue being so sudden, that also raises the issue that it could be something software related, but no updates were made prior to this issue occurring. It simply happened, without any red flags prior.

Then I think your vapour chamber has leaked.

#

You would need to call lenovo or get a new heatsink assy.

Yeah that might be it unfortunately. Thanks for the help though! I'll leave this open for a bit in case someone else has anything more to add.
