Model: Legion 5
What have you tried already?: Taking the laptop apart and reseating the display connector on the motherboard; did not try taking the lid apart to reseat that connector.
When did it start producing the issue: Noticed it yesterday, but could've been ongoing
Did you install new drivers or software?: No, and it occurs in Linux as well (so it's not driver related)

Viewing this webpage causes strange lines on the screen to form inside the solid square https://rainynight.city/awfultest/test.html
The ugly mosaic background of the website seems to do funky things to the display

#

this is what the screen should look like

#

and this is what i see

#

those lines shouldnt be there

#

the background of that website is made up of a grid of different colored pixels

#

the lines on the square appear brighter or darker depending on three things:

  1. the specific pattern of dots on the specific line
  2. how much of that line is made up of dots
  3. patterns of lines can be affected by neighbor lines (ie a perfect grid of black and white dots wont have lines, except for the top line if the line above is a dark color)
so that magical pattern on that site makes super bright lines in the screen when the pattern occupies most of the length of the screen
#

It would be incredibly helpful if fellow Legion 5 owners could try opening that site (with a standard DPI; it only works if the site isn't scaled at all) and reporting if they experience this issue as well

#

If multiple people have it, then its a limitation of the display (some lcd's dont like single pixel grids)
if no one else has the issues, its something screwed up with this laptop

Which gpu, which cpu, do you have hybrid gpu mode on or off

#

Intel Core i7-10750H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, and I've tried hybrid mode on and off

hollow heron
#

Sounds more of a visual glitch than issue

#

Tbh

#

I would try posting link for this thread to #legion-5 and asking if someone can try opening the site

compact current
#

its definitely very strange, and those lines can extend beyond the web browser (it affects the whole line of the screen)

simple trail
#

Opening that on my phone makes the same lines. Probably nothing to be concerned with.

hollow heron
#

Its probably tied to how gpu renders such window

hollow heron
compact current
#

interesting....
maybe i'll try with an external monitor

simple trail
#

Hmm yea I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max

hollow heron
#

Ah ye

hollow heron
# compact current

Yeah its probably due to the site, a million of tiny dots around big grey dot, a very weird thing to render if you asked me

#

Any gpu can have stupid problem displaying it imo

#

Even perhaps how display refreshes can affect that

simple trail
#

Ye

#

Tried 60hz on my phone vs 120, looked the same. But yeah nonetheless, probably nothing to be concerned about.

hollow heron
#

Especially if its that site specifically

compact current
#

the problem does extend beyond that site (any small pixel grid can cause a similar effect) but that specific combination looks the worst

#

probably how i've never noticed it

hollow heron
compact current
#

i have confirmed its not the laptop screen, but likely the gpu
i've hooked the laptop into a tv, and i get the same lines

#

however, they are a different shape on the tv

simple trail
#

Or it’s their website. I don’t see a problem here.

compact current
#

its definitely not the website (i made it) its just the easiest way to demonstrate the effect

simple trail
#

Does it have anything to do with the main page saying this webpage is optimized for 1024x768 res?

compact current
#

the specific webpage i linked is just a background with a solid grey square (no javascript, html5, or anything fancy, and is completely unrelated to the main page)

simple trail
#

Ok, well, again, I don’t see a problem here. peepoidk

hollow heron
#

The page is for demonstration of the issue that happens all over the system

#

Atleast thats how i understand it

compact current
#

yes

hollow heron
#

Did you try fucking with drivers ? Like trying out different ones etc

#

Nvm

#

Re read the post

#

It happens in linux too

#

Hm

compact current
#

it definitely has to be gpu related though

#

really the only thing is whether or not anyone else with the same GPU has this issue

hollow heron
#

But it affects both of them pepewut , thats what i dont understand

#

Same shit hybrid on and off

compact current
#

yeah true hmmmmmm

hollow heron
#

That doesnt make sense, the artifacts would be different

#

What about ram

#

I mean it barely makes sense

#

But did you try slotting just one ?

#

Faulty ram i suppose can cause some weird artifacting if it doesnt correct errors

compact current
#

i suppose; though i dont think the effect would be consistent across OSes (linux and windows would store driver data in different places afterall)

hollow heron
#

True

#

This doesnt make sense at all, it happens across multiple gpus, across multiple screens and across multiple os

#

What the hell

#

Issue with motherboard lanes then

compact current
#

probably something like that

#

unless it happens to other users of the same model, which i doubt (suppose i could ask though)

hollow heron
#

Yea gotta ask

simple trail
#

just tried it with my 5 pro

#

same lines

#

it does not extend out past the browser window though.

#

same on both internal screen and external monitor

compact current
#

do you use the dark theme on windows by any chance? (only asking because it makes it easy to demonstrate something)

simple trail
#

yes

#

want me to switch to light?

compact current
#

right click on the site
do the lines extend into the context menu? (which should be dark on firefox/chrome)

compact current
#

hmmmmmmmmm very odd

blazing bramble
#

same problem :/

compact current
#

so far that makes 5 people total (including me) with strange effects caused by pixel-y test patterns on Lenovo laptops (the 5th is a ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 owned by someone in another server)
there's varying consistency between people though but at least one person has the exact same issue as me
sample size is still a bit small though, but its enough to know that something is definitely off

#

im gonna rename this topic to be more general

#

Strange lines on screen caused by pixel test patterns and grids

compact current
#

i.e. if its not maximized

#

@tropic lantern if you get a chance would you mind uploading a quick picture of the lines on your screen from my test page? doesnt have to be good quality or anything, just enough to show something's off

compact current
#

okie dokie thanks a bunch!

compact current
#

I'm working on a spreadsheet to compile whatever info I can

compact current
#

I have a pretty decent idea of how to possibly get more documentation about this thing
I may take a trip to Best Buy soon and try this out on all their Legion demo models
didn't have this idea until last night
