Initial Impressions on the Gauntlet Grinder Concept

Premise: My primary motivation for developing the Gauntlet Grinder format was the persistent shortage of players in ranked mode.

Personally, I love watching the top 20-30 players compete in 4-5 hour tournaments, but what truly excites me is seeing players engage in matches at all hours of the day.

While Gauntlet mode is constantly improving, the 30-minute wait times to find a match are incredibly detrimental to the player experience. Players become frustrated, unwilling to wait so long, and eventually close the game to do something else. It's completely understandable.

The data suggests that a small motivational boost was all it took to trigger a chain reaction: I'm seeing players pouring hours into the game to reach the next threshold, and more importantly, they're having a blast. A game is only enjoyable if you can actually play it; staring at loading screens is no fun for anyone.

The more you play, the more you love this game – it's a fact.

I'm proud and happy to see you all back online, competing against each other. I've even spotted some names I haven't seen in ranked for quite some time. Well, well... let's keep this momentum going!

It was a great idea, its so fun to see people comeback to the game and active around the game

Even though its simply for a qualification and that it was only a couple days it felt like really good

Its sad that illuvium is once again delayed for a minimum of 3 months but if we can keep this format running for our little community events it will give some life to the game until we launch

yeah every time I tried to play it took forever to find a match I simply stopped trying.

This is what the game needed! Player base has been really small lately. Shouldn’t take 15-20 mins to find a match during peak US evening playtime.

Really great initiative! Reminded me of the OG Ascendant ranked rewards days where everyone was grinding all day everyday.

More of this please, shout-out to @velvet glacier and Hyperion guild.

Sounds like Phantom/Wildfire might implement something similar in future. Can we get access to some API to automate the process? I’m assuming this took some manual effort to track.

I think it was a good idea to introduce this mode. I'm convinced that Gauntlet will be a huge success once the crashes and a few remaining bugs are fixed! If we then invest more in advertising, it can only go well because the game is great and addictive as hell!

It was a really smart idea for a tournament.👏
Would like to see one like this for Leviathan too.

This event really reduced the wait time for finding a game. Usually after 500 sec I would just close the arena and go to OW, but while the qualifiers were going on, the search time was very low, which is good.
It was a really good idea.
I don't understand why they didn't make rewards (not big ones) for the leaderboard as they did before the testnet. It would have definitely revived the gauntlet. While we wait for the new season. Of course, there are still bugs (x3 toxic) or overly strong x9 water variants, but that was also the case before the testnet when we played ascendant. But how else can we know about bugs if no one plays (almost).
In this event, I participated with a new account. And I had less problems with the game crashing, and especially with freezes at the beginning of the match. It seems like a huge number of assets on the account causes a problem with the connection/freezing of the game. Or maybe it's just a coincidence?

The "Win Games to Qualify" format is genius! We will definitely incorporate that into our Phantom Tournaments!

I think the Bo1 Semifinals and Bo1 Grand Finals setup was a big misstep. I'm not sure why someone thought designing a tournament to be completed in just two games—making it as short and random as possible—was a good idea. Hopefully, this has been addressed, as it likely drew significant criticism.

Honestly the "LIVE Tournaments" are something that seems to help more the youtubers/streamers than the actual playerbase. If we analyze how many viewers we had in the previous LIVE events (lasting 5-7 hours) compared to the benefit we had doing these qualifier week (actual interest by players) it s like 1 to 10 or maybe more. (P.S. the games are 3 not 2..tier 1 semi-tier2 semi...then the final)

HYPE is interested into keep the game alive 24/7 more than doing shiny events once a week.. Both are important...but we are no streamers/youtubers.

Not sure if that was directed at me, as I didn’t say anything about "Live Tournaments." If you don’t want to stream your event, you can still opt for longer semifinals and grand finals with more games, providing a bigger sample size and reducing the influence of luck on the outcome.

The fewer games you have, the less competitive integrity the tournament will maintain. If the tournament is only two games long, RNG will have a HUGE impact. This is especially troublesome in the current iteration of the game, where we haven’t had a balance patch in a while, and many things are broken. For example, if someone finds a strong legendary augment like Mystic or Toxic Emblem, they can essentially auto-win the tournament.

I think we should always strive for the best competitive setting rather than cutting corners to save time in the final stages of the event. After all, this format already requires players to invest significant time to qualify, and you’ve also spent a lot of time checking all the screenshots. It doesn’t make sense to cut costs or effort in the final and most important stage of the tournament.

Regarding the "Live" aspect, I believe the main reason tournaments should have a live online presence is to provide social proof for Illuvium. Illuvium can repost these events on Twitter and show the Web3 community that we actively run tournaments multiple times a month with a certain number of participants and a set prize pool. If this doesn’t happen publicly and live, the only people truly aware of these events are the PvP players within the Illuvium community. While building a strong grassroots foundation is important, Illuvium isn’t gaining much else from these efforts. This seems like a missed opportunity.

I believe you do have some streamers and YouTubers, and I hope that if you don’t host any live events, you will still encourage them to create recorded content to showcase these events on social media.

Illuvium will do its events when game will be polished and as much bug free as possible , the spectator mode is what they are waiting for.

U believe it wrongly ser..we had Soda..but as you know he s gone eh.

#

The audience of these live events is not worth the time imho, but I think every good player could and should stream his tournament's gameplay...with a proper delay.

@hasty arch , @wise dock , @dark bone , @light aurora and all the other finalists....You are free and welcome to stream your finals gameplay, and this action can significantly increase Illuvium's visibility on the social platforms.

For me the genius of this tournament format, was that I could jump in and play at any time of the day or night, rather than being pinned down to the extended hours of the other types of live tournaments we had before. With such a small player base, giving players the chance to play when they could, allowed for, and facilitated, more participation. The greater benifit was that so many players liked the format, that queue times dropped significantly at all hours!

I also think that this format reduces the impact of the current state of many Gauntlet bugs and crashes, it's still frustrating of course, but losing just means jumping into another match, not crashing out of a bracket in a live tournament, or having to gather all 8 players back in to restart the same lobby.

This event significantly improved matchmaking efficiency, drastically reducing the time required to find a game. Under normal circumstances, I would often close the arena and switch to another game, like Overwatch, after waiting for over 1200seconds. However, during the qualifiers, the search times were remarkably shorter, which was a fantastic improvement. Overall, this initiative was an excellent idea and greatly enhanced the gaming experience. GG to @velvet glacier and Hype for this !

I think this is a good solution to increase the active player base. It provides an incentive to play the game, which we currently lack. As Quants stated, the waiting time is a problem at the moment, and this is a solution that addresses it. I also like the old concept with many tournament matches, so if this could be combined into a package, I believe it would benefit Illuvial overall. It would be awesome if we could implement this on a weekly schedule with set times and dates.
