#Bring back ranger bonding

With the upcoming arrival of the ranger in gauntlet, I think we need to bring back ranger bonding.

The current set of weapons limits the possibilities and if more weapons are added for more classes and affinities, there would be too many weapons for gauntlet. This is why I think the team should bring back the basic weapons (gun, staff, sword, shield, dagger) along with bonding. The tactical decisions that would ensue would add a layer of decision making that is needed in gauntlet.

Bonding was a unique feature in Illuvium that let people express creativity and that would be even more the case in gauntlet.

Bonding was the best thing about the game. It would enhance decision making.

Also when bonding was available people were so much creative, you can come up with so many different bonding strategies, ensuring unique gameplay for everyone and every game.

I think bonding in Gaunlet would add so many possibilities of what you can do, and really differentiate us from other auto battler.

With current weapon system, you would need 225 weapons to have every combinations available for the ranger.

With bonding you only need 25 weapons to have all combinations available (and those weapon already exists)

I don't want to see the team spending time designing and BALANCING that many weapons when their time could be used elsewhere.

If you have the math readily available, I would love to see it how you got to 225 quick math... it feels like wayyyy more

Quick napkin math:

  • 5 primary affinities
  • 15 composite affinities
  • 5 primary classes
  • 15 composite classes
  • if we take one selection from each column, this would mean 400 total combinations possible (20 x 20)

Happy be be wrong ^^ just questioning the math to make sure we are all on the same page 😀

List is way tooooo long to send so it's a PDF lol 😆

If you factor in the primary classes and affinities, it increases it to 400.... which is INSANE!

(Put both reactions to have them available on the post)

I loved the bonding system a lot. I think the weapons could still retain their use case for ascendant; I don't think we should remove them. We already have different gameplay in Gauntlet with mastery points, staging, etc., so I don’t see an issue with making the ranger work differently as well.

Possible downsides are that balancing becomes much harder with so many different ranger options. The 200+ different combinations seem a horror balancing-wise.

However, I think the added fun and the variety of available compositions might make it worthwhile.

I liked the uniqueness of the bonding. I would like to see a way if having it implemented again. Thumbs up.

I think bonding made sense when we didn't have composite weapons. Now not so much.

I love bonding, way better for me than the new system, but I don't think it matters much and we can't regress imo.

I've requested input from the team for this, will update you here asap.

I would rather work more on the weapons. Will have a huge impact on combat and they are not at their full potential.
We have 2 shields but not a proper sword, one boomerang, a dagger or something, idk, as a mage you have a small twig or whatever that is. They look bad imo
Would be cool to integrate the weapons woth the bonding.
Have an empty sword, bond with the illuvial and make it transform

Thanks for bringing this up @bleak girder 🍞

I also loved the weapon bonding mechanic. The reason they removed it was because it adds complexity for new players, but i feel this could be addressed via better UI + arena tutorial

Pros:
-Easier to balance
-Opens up traits availability much more
-Opens up possible combination and viability of all weapons
-Adds a layer of skill expression

Cons:
-Ruining people that already spent on weapons
-More complex for onboarding

Looking forward to see everyones opinion on this topic

Bonding was cool, new composite weapons are meh

After adding the bond, how about having weapons coexist with it, similar to the charms in TFT? If they coexist well, I think it will be one of the unique elements of Illuvium.

Can someone explain how bonding works?

# amber girder Can someone explain how bonding works?

Back when the weapons only gave a primary affibity and class, bonding would take the dominant trait of the illuvial yiu bond with and add it on top of the weapon's primaries.

So earth / rogue weapon

Bond with air/fighter illuvial

Earth + air = dust
Rogue + Fighter = slayer

Now with each illuvial having primary traits in line with the stage 1 illuvial, bondibg is a bit more difficult technically speaking. Because certain combinations may be more easily attained? And we now have weapons that give the composite affinities so there doesnt seem to be a need to bond anymore.

I personally like the idea of bringing back bonding for gauntlet but leaving the unique weapon element to ascendent but it sounds like maybe unnecessary?

I don't see why both can't be a thing? Is it just an issue where we would need a way to get every new player max stat weapons for free or something else??
