#Trivialized Master Shard

Since the Master Shard concept was introduced I always pushed for the idea of getting shard dust on failed capture attempts.

However, I always envisioned it not being guaranteed on every failed capture. As it stands, we're kind of trivializing the master shards since you can use inappropriate shards with low capture percentages and still get shard dust from it.

In my opinion, shard dust should only be given if the drone actually manages to get the illuvial inside it for a while. The animation where the capture instantly fails shouldn't reward any shard dust.

Thoughts?

I dont get it.
You can just craft and destroy them too for dust to speed things up. Why use enocunter energy for that?

As expensive as shards are, getting dust on every fail is a must.

it's not even exciting getting shard dust since you know it's a given from failed attempts.

Well to make it matter we'd have to remove the option of destroying your shards for dust

as it is, it's basically working as a rebate on the shard cost.

If you wanted master shards to be more unique and/or more expensive, wouldn’t the better solution be to raise fuel price. 5000 is pretty cheap now. This creates a demand for fuel which is good for the economy.

I'd say that giving shard dust reduces the pain of losing the illuvial. Resplendent shards have come down, but it sucks to waste $4 and get nothing back. When it was $10 it would have been super painful to also get nothing back.

So it gives an incentive to use more shards. Shards cost fuel, which helps the economy.

And fuel prices are not super planned, they were created during beta, which had infinite resources, so people were curing and using master shards like they were epic shards. During closed beta there were huge changes in prices. But even then it would be impossible to fully predict when it came to real money, the optimal fuel prices that should be set.

I'd say they should look at the fuel prices of certain things like master shards and adjust accordingly.

there are 2 very different drone capture animations. I'm just saying to only give shard dust on the one that doesn't break immediately.

Could make it random % of shards you get? Less % on immediate fails

waxen apex
#

this would also make the master shard price non linear. Which makes it much more enticing.

#

cause right now we know 1 master shard = 9 failed resplendent.

vale hawk
#

Yeah and it'd make a difference between if you were failing captures or just breaking them down at the base

vale hawk
#

Like you should probably get more from breaking them down at the base, than capture failures, as you are getting a chance at an illuvial

waxen apex
#

2 completely different environments and circumstances shouldn't have the same outcome.

vale hawk
#

Not a bad idea to make it random amount, with different % depending on animation. I'm not sure if the immediate fail deserves more or less. It kind of sucks to see that immediate fail

19$ per master shard 👌

15$ per master shard. You guys still don't think there's too much shard dust going around??

any thoughts on this <@&1107754780744487002>?

There was also a thread for too many shards. I think this ties back to that in some capacity. Too many shards, too many fragments to some extent.

Overall, the cost of a master shard is directly impacted by the price of fuel. Since fuel prices drop, shard prices drop.

Im personally of the opinion that the amount of fragments required is high enough. The issue is just that there is no constant for fuel, which makes pricing items difficult (read impossible). I dont think we should complain about low shard prices while fuel is inflating at +400%~ fuel per purchase right now.

However, we also see an oversaturation of low tier shards. Just like with accessories in beyond, the tier system is not really adding anything in this mechanic. You only require the best T4+ shards as the low tier ones dont cut it for most of your captures.

A new animation for fragment obtaining is a lot of work for little value.

If this were to be pushed, i would suggest: reduce fragment chances on T4-T5, remove deconstructing, and entice players to throw T1-T3 stuff in the hopes of getting fragments. And then also balance it to the Tier of the illuvial. I.e. T1 shards wouldnt drop fragments on T4/T5 illuvials.

But with current fuel fluctuations i would say that it is not a priority to fix right now. Price will fluctuate with fuel price regardless.

Still on vacation until this weekend - but the idea behind shard dust on every attempt is to simulate the "burning" of the shards for shard dust...

I see it as two fold for the player and they should make the choice:

  1. try and capture and illuvial
    Or
  2. destroy the shard for shard dust

Perhaps instead of adding another RnG roll during capturing, just set a finite amount when you fail a capture, say 25% shard dust return or 50% shard dust return (seen like a "cash back" vs 100% shard dust for destroying them

There is an abundance of lower tier shards that people can buy, refine and deconstruct for dust, but the only usecase for dust is a mastershard

So like Garf said, abundance of shards = abundance of shard dust. I feel reducing the spawn rate for shards too heavily would have negatively community sentiment. Also, presently the casual player takes a LOONG time to accumulate enough shard dust (from failed attempts) for a master shard - I am sure this can be calculated by someone ("x" shards per Tier for enough shard dust for mastershard)

#

Master shards are still expensive in terms of Solon (i believe, cant double check now and i have only crafted 2) when crafting them... the shard dust is less of a requirement and easy to obtain casually over time. I don't see why increasing the shard dust amount would be a concern, to me it makes more sense to bump the Solon number (fuel) for crafting/refining shards vs. Increasing the shard dust amount

This is how I am when it comes to shard dust:

"OH I have enough dust, let's craft a mastershard"

I feel this ties into the Burning mechanics & use-case for nfts (or in-game assets) that are being discussed everywhere right now - it all ties into the economics around the ecosystem to keep it fruitful and healthy...

Just my two-cents while poolside drinking a mojito 🍹

I can revisit this when I am back home at my PC 😀

ok guys let me make it a bit clearer then.

First of all. The price is not only tied to the fuel but also to their demand. And right now since it is very rare to find a high tier dark holo or a T5S3 master shards are barely used.

Second, I never said this would require a new animation to obtain shard dust or needing to add another RNG roll. We already have 2 different animations for capture we just need to use those. One where the drone immediately breaks and the other where he keeps the illuvial inside it for a while and then fails. I'm simply saying that the animation where the drone immediately breaks shouldn't give shard dust, that simple.

Lastly, I also don't think we should be reducing the spawn rate for shards or shard dust too heavily. This change would simply be a little nerf to the shard dust supply. The animation where the drone breaks is very uncommon to happen unless the player is using shards of a lower tier than the illuvial he's trying to capture.

# waxen apex ok guys let me make it a bit clearer then. First of all. The price is not only ...

Thanks for reeling it back in and summarizing concisely here

A) Immediate Break/failure = Zero Dust

B) Further in nature animation = stardust return (100%)

I do agree that due to the cost of the 100% Capture (master shard) most players will wait for a dark holo, or Tier 5 stage 2/stage 3 (potentially also a holo)

I am removing my 👎 for now and will think about it more on my flight home

Ya it doesn't feel good that they are so low. I am curious if we would see them rise again when there is a larger player base. I am also curious if the problem is around T5S2 and S3 drops where these are actually worth using.

I could get behind your idea where capture attempts have a % chance to drop shard fragments that scale with tier of illuvial and shard. It will be a balncing game on its own but leave it to labs to decided thresholds

This idea will never get decent 👍 because the community sees it as a nerf to the value they're getting from capturing. But I think this would be a great way to increase the value of the master shards and subsequently of the higher tier illuvials.
